Very cool looking Holly. Look forward to seeing blooms of it again perhaps next year!
FIRST FLOWERS OF SUMMER!!! Yay it's finally here!!!
Cool Holly, I will for sure remember to save the next big handled-bottle thing that I empty... but I'll be sure to wash it well first, before I use it. ;)
I'm not sure what got me to thinking about this, but it just hit me outta the blue... the sedum (that really low-growing yellow-blooming ground cover that I've got... it's Sedum "Acre", AKA: "Goldmoss Stonecrop". I know that Gita was wanting a bunch of it, seeing as how she loves it so much. ;) heeheeheee
I walked around the backyard to survey the damage, but there was not one thing out of place. It looks like the storm blew through the front yard and left the back alone. So strange.
I was struck by the most wonderful scent during my walkabout. Almost like Japanese honeysuckle, except it's not the right season for it. Then I realized it was the Conca d'Or lilies! Wow, do they smell just wonderful!
The lilies from last year's ADR group buy are starting to bloom here. I never kept track of what I planted where, so I'm now matching up the blooms to pictures in the Plant Database. The Asiatics bloomed first and now the Orientals are getting started. I think someone else, maybe SSG, posted 'Dimension' earlier. It is so cool that we have a lot of the same things from the swaps and the group buys. Love seeing them in the different settings and comparing the drastically different bloom times.
#1 - Oriental lily 'Holland Beauty'
#2 - Asiatic lily 'Dimension'
#3 - Lonicera (Honeysuckle) 'Peaches and Cream'
#4 - A Monster Hosta and Sensitive Fern taking over - looks absolutely prehistoric
Beautiful blooms, Aspenhill! Sure sorry I missed the lily bulb buy last year-- I think I joined just as it was finishing up.
Catmint, I hope we do another lily buy next year. It was such a great deal. I think the prices were at least half of what you usually find online.
Aspenhill, what an interesting honeysuckle!
yes, that would be so much fun, SSG! Hope we do one again soon! :-)
Beautiful blooms, Greenthumb! That is such a vivid blue on the phlox and your stachys blooms are huge!
Aspen, I checked my beautyberry and the cultivar is 'Purple Pearls'. As I recall, it was one of the last beautyberries they had and I was happy to get it at such a good price. But I think 'Purple Pearls' and 'Issai' look very similar.
Cat, I remember 'Purple Pearls' being there. I think I had already put 2 different beautyberries on my cart ('Profusion' and 'Issaii') so I passed on a third cultivar - LOL, what kind of plant addict am I to have done that!
David, I am enjoying all your pics!
Happy 4th! our local parade was cancelled today due to the forecast being rainy. we have had some heavy winds rip through in the past few days. a huge limb snapped on the top of our black walnut.
Lots of blooms, esp daylilies blooming away. If it doesn't pour this morning, I hope to take some photos.
And, our super tall hollyhock tipped over!! completely flat out! didn't snap luckily, so we could prop it back up...
LOL Aspen--so there wasn't room in the cart for *3* beautyberry cultivars? ;-)
Wind, sorry to hear about your super tall hollyhock! I had several tall plants blow over, too. :-(
I have some new blooms to post--but am having difficulty uploading my pictures.
Soon....G.
Lost my one lily ('Stargazer') in the storm. A whole bunch of blossoms about ready to bloom, and the main stem was snapped off by the falling monarda near its base. Sad--never got to see the blossoms. :-(
Trying to hearten myself by focusing on some blooms:
1) Russian Sage 'Little Spire' just beginning to bloom
2) Dill is blooming! From Jill's seeds
3) Blanketflower 'Gallo Yellow Trumpet' (Gaillardia aristata) in full blossom now--just waiting for the center blooms to open up
4) NoID seedlings! What are they? More yellow celosia??
5) Volunteer Rudbeckia fulgida that managed to seed in my fence gully and is now bravely climbing up...
CM - bring your Stargazer stem inside and put it in a vase. The flowers will likely open and fill your house with their incredible fragrance.
Thanks GT! :-) I have it safely in a vase now. Hope it blooms!
Absolutely, enjoy it inside, but do be careful about what is beneath it. When the pollen falls on countertops, fabrics, etc., it can stain.
That's good to know, Pat! thanks!
What a glorious day!
1. Phlox NoID
2. Spider Flower - Cleome 'Violet Queen'
3. Black Cohosh - Cimicifugia (Actaea) racemosa - almost impossible to get camera to focus on the wispy flower spikes.
4. White Spotted Dead Nettle - Lamium maculatum 'White Nancy'
5. Globe Thistle - Echinops ritro 'Taplow Blue'
Beautiful photos, Greenthumb! Love the delicate plumes of that black cohosh and the narrow-leaved mountain mint. Beautiful color phlox.
Finally got a chance to read some of the last page posts here. The blooms are beautiful and the information about them is really helpful. Ecnalg, I was holding a huge bouquet of lilies and other blooms to bring to a gathering. The interior of our car is cream colored leather. Now it has stubborn stains every where the anthers of the lilies brushed against it!!
Oh, Roses, what a disaster. Your poor car. I had no idea they stained, and thankfully David warned me. I've been able to get the pollen off our almond kitchen countertop with some work. So easy to brush up against one in the garden and get it on your clothes when smelling one, too.
More----
1--Calla Lily--2nd year. it is 3' tall.
2--Calla Lily blooms--looking down on the tops.
3--Giant Purple Amaranth (from seed)
4--Mandevilla
5--One of the first roses on my newly planted "First Prize" Rose. From HD.
they were not as big as they should be--but the rose is not rooted in yet.
However--it did have about 6 or 7 blooms. Next year......
Beautiful blooms, Gita. My Brazilian Plume Flower is getting to blossom. It has soooo many buds!! Can't wait to get some pictures of it. The Rose Campion from the swap (from Greenthumb) is making quite a statement right at the front of my shade garden where the only sun shines. It's huge and beautiful.
I love the color of the Rose Campion (also from Greenthumb). Right now it is in my 'To be placed elsewhere' bed.
beautiful Gita! I especially love the calla lily! and pic #5 lily you grew from seed
Greenthumb you have some interesting plants! the American Germander - Teucrium canadense reminds me of salvia blooms. I bet hummingbirds like it. We've never grown that
Roses, Try rubbing a bit of dish washing liquid on the stains and let it sit for a few minutes. It works great on my counter tops for stubborn stains.
Gita, I just love that Calla Lily. I use to have them but they never put on a show like yours are.
yes, beautiful calla lily, Gita!
I got this Calla Lily as a gift from a woman i worked with at HD 4 years ago.
She is the one who also gave me the Baptista ,a Pineapple Lily (it 's gone now),,,
and the oriental Lily called "Forever Susan"---her name.
She left our HD to move to their house in VA and transferred to another HD.
Last year was the first time it bloomed. Looked quite different from this year's.
It spent the winter, dormant and dry, in the pot in my basement.
This spring--I brought it out, watered it and waited. It has grown nicely-now 3' tall--
and the blooms are almost black. The word "stately" suits it to a "T".
Wonder how big it will be next year? I G.
Last year in July.
Roses---
My Brazilian Plume has no buds yet--but it is HUGE! Almost 3' tall.
I can't wait for every branch tip to have a bloom on it.
When it is done blooming--I will cut it back and have a zillion rooted
cuttings to share. Brace yourselves!
It IS a very woody plant. Breaks easily. Makes me think that, in it's native habitat,
it may well be a small tree--or a large shrub.
Here it is next to the calla Lily. and (#2) on a small table. Each year it grows bigger..DAH!
edited to add--
when each bloom withers, gently break it off--and you may get additional
blooms below it. Smaller--but still blooms.
In the winter--I keep it by a sunny window and treat it as a reg. houseplant.

wow I don't have much to add after all those beautiful flowers!
Just thought I'd comment that the bloom on my Gingerland caladium was really interesting and attractive, but only for a day or two, then it wilted.
GT, you and Ecnalg have such amazing plants! I love that desmodium canadense and persicaria. I bought a persicaria this spring but I'm not sure that it will bloom this year. That blackberry lily is pretty awesome too.
Cat, it's amazing that we take such nice care of our gardens and then, with no care at all, an amazing flower pops up and looks beautiful!
Gita, your goldenrod is pretty but isn't it a little early for goldenrod? I thought they bloomed later?
I have to take some new pics and I'll start a new thread tomorrow.
jeff--
This is the dwarf, garden type Goldenrod. I bought it in a pot along with
my Campanula which bloomed just a short while, but is making a lot of new growth from below.
Coleup kind of inspired me--as the Goldenrod is a nectar plant...
I am/was trying to refresh my YUK bed with some new plants.
Where the Goldenrod got planted--I dug up the nepeta (never did anything for me..).
Where the Campanula got planted--I dug up the Cornflower I gave to David at the swap.
And--so it goes--for anything NEW--something old has to go.
IF something dies not do anything for my liking--out it goes...

Guess I'll sneak 1 or 2 in here before Jeff boots us out to the next thread. ;)
You all sure have some gorgeous blooming going on in your yardens!
Found my first Plumbago bloom of the year while out watering yesterday. The single bloom is surrounded by buds, too. Yay!
Another Caladium bloom. She's probably a day or 2 old at this point, looked slightly yellow.
Most of my Love in a Mist blooms are now varying shades of blue, which I am loving!
A little firefly enjoying the Love in a Mist.
One of the many Love in a Mist seed pods. Holly, aren't these what Joyanna call the little Alien Heads? :) Right now they're quite green and supple. Can you tell me about seed collecting from these, please? (and thank you). :)
Oh Gita, thank you for reminding me... I need to get out there again today and take some pics of my Nepeta (Walker's Low Catmint). Not only are they taking root very well, but after I gave 'em a MAJOR haircut, they're blooming again nicely.
So Catmint, I see you like it in my yarden! =)
LOL Speedie on the Catmint. Would love to be able to enjoy your garden in person! :-) My 'Walker's Low' has been blooming well this year and also looks like it's getting ready for a 2nd flush. I love your Love in a Mist! Such pretty blues and blooming so profusely!
