A hole in the landscape

Eau Claire, WI(Zone 4a)

I finally got around to getting this Q. ellipsoidalis removed. It had to be done, but still made for a sad day. The tree rings are incredibly tight, but my best estimate has placed it at around 100 years.

I've decided to go with Ulmus americana 'St Croix' as a replacement. The parent tree lives in Afton, MN, which is just across the St Croix river from Wisconsin. I have not seen the original tree, but it is supposedly massive and has withstood DED for many years while nearby trees succumbed. I've taken my time with this decision and sure hope I'm getting it right.

I remember that scene from your thread last year- sounds like a good plan. A local and resistant Elm sounds perfect.
Watching tree surgeons/loggers is always interesting, and free firewood is nice too (well, after you factor in the splitter, time, and trip to the chiropractor maybe its not so free...).

Oh Pseudo, a sad day indeed. Your replacement was a big decision, I'm glad you put that much thought into it and am certain you'll be happy with it.
