The tree rings are incredibly tight, but my best estimate has placed it at around 100 years. I've decided to go with Ulmus americana 'St Croix' as a replacement. The parent tree lives in Afton, MN, which is just across the St Croix river from Wisconsin. I have not seen the original tree, but it is supposedly massive and has withstood DED for many years while nearby trees succumbed. I've taken my time with this decision and sure hope I'm getting it right. |
