Yardening June 2014

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Good to know Cat/SSG. I guess if they come super tiny, I'll pot them up and let them root more before sending them out the the big leagues :)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Sorry Sally, mine is the stainless steel ego machine and it has held up really well for 10+ years, so I haven't even been pricing the market lately. I've seen some at WalMart though - my favorite place for finding economical options for all things in general.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha Terri, well, you have plenty of people to use it on, and room to put it! Ours needs to share a corner of the deck and cook for five people only, 99 percent of the time.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Need to venture out and dig up some white wood hyacinths, and plant marigolds, and get a new picture for a new Yardening thread.
Got my first ever bloom on a Peruvian daffodil!! It's been years! They do smell wonderful, that sweet tropical scent. Last year I had them planted behind the asparagus, hoping I would feed and water them better there. I guess it worked, just not as fast as I hoped. It seems like the better fed ones didn't make so many offshoots, maybe that was a symptom of putting more energy into their main bulb.

Many of theBrinkman grills are quite inexpensive.

I love the Brinkman name--it is a great, no nonsense, grill.
No SS and fancy schmancy extras.

Here's the lineup at HD. click on any picture for more info.

I'm with G on the Brinkman. I need to get a new grill as mine was a $100 unit from Sear's 4 years ago and it's got some rusting issues. Although, my neighbor has a grill that's nicer than mine and he might be getting a new one for Father's day. If that happens, he said he'd give me his for nothing. Free upgrade!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sally, I rebuilt one of mine 2-3 times ordering the parts online. Mine was a basic cast alum. body and cast grate, I'm thinking Charbroil ? It usually cost about $50-70 to replace all the interior parts except the grate. I kept that thing till the steel frame rusted out and preferred it to the 5 burner stainless ego machine I got for Father's day. It was also more practical for grilling for 2.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

Here is a slew of grill replacement parts available.

Most of them are available right in the stores. In our store--they are
in the greenhouse--but only a few stores have one (Glen Burnie is one of them).
Catonsville should have one too. The 1st 4 HD's built around this area
had a GH.

May find some discounts???

The plants from SRG have always arrived in 4" pots & never plug sized...especially not the ones I've ordered later in the spring/summer

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I ordered 6 plants and they should be shipped 6/16. Only 34 bucks! And Cat, I decided to try your Sienna Sunset :)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Hope you get great looking plants! I've always received them very fast, but they are coming from just 6 hrs away in the panhandle - I want to fill in the front of my beds with some low growing Veronica's & other short, spreading plants...heading out shortly to check on my 'crops' & take some pictures

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

We'll see :) Probably a 3 day point for me. I payed extra for the 'standard' shipping rather than the flat rate shipping.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I did want to order some butterfly weed, but not available until fall...so will wait for a little bit on them...since I'm ordering bulbs later for fall planting, I'll do it all at once! When we moved here last year I ordered about 300 plants all together & got them in the ground - they bloomed very nicely, but nothing like they have this spring/summer! I did lose about 10 to the frost & I already replaced them...but, have bare spots I want to fill. My mad plan is to cut everything back in Oct/Nov & add more garden soil & mulch - I also have some Clem's & Figs I'm planting in between... They are growing nicely in pots & getting bigger & ready for planting

Bec's a busy bee!

Thanks for the grill advice. I like that cute red Brinkman for 129$
I wonder about rebuilding but ours has so much disgusting half burned grease utter garbage in the bottom, I would rather throw it out! And you know I reuse when I can.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Hope the Sienna Sunset is a nice one for you Seq! :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

SSG I think you have extra large leafcutter bees making nests with your red bud leaves! :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Bec, It looks beautiful, LOL on the bagged Crops. From the pic of the neighbors homes in the distance it doesn't look like they do much gardening.
SSG, Sure wish I could see that Red Bud in your garden setting, I remember seeing it before it leafed out when I was down there. I bet is looks just lovely. Those are big holes an interesting how they are just on the edges I bet some kind of leaf cutter bug. Kind of neat in a way.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Nope, very few do any gardening...it's all the same & perfectly Stepfordish! Y'all know I've never conformed to anything, why start now!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, it's just such a cute tree! It's the perfect size for my small yard. I don't mind the leaf cutter bees chewing on the leaves, but I just want them to leave some for the tree!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

wow, Becky, what a transformation over the past year! :-) I think you had just moved at the time I joined DG, and I remember seeing photos of your new baby plants.

I've gotten two bare root plants, both Arbor Day Foundation specials--a crape myrtle tree last year, and magnolia 'Jane' this year. I have definitely found it more challenging to grow from bare roots--not something I want to do a lot of. But the first Arbor Day tree was free, and the magnolia this year was only about $15.

However, I was thrilled yesterday to go out and find the first tiny leaf on my magolia 'Jane'. I also recently planted my crape myrtle in the ground as opposed to the big 16" pot I've had it in the past year. Yay, big milestone!

1) Magnolia 'Jane' with her first tiny leaf--yay!
2) My little crape myrtle tree, in the ground at last. I put it on my curb strip with some protective chicken wire around it. I wonder if it will bloom this year?

FIXED LINK

This message was edited Jun 13, 2014 11:40 PM

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--The link above to a new thread does not work!

The cute red one by Brinkman is the one I bought last year. Good choice!
Haven't used it but a couple times--but it is enough for the little bit
I will be grilling.

You DO know that assembly of a grill is a FREE service HD provides.
If the grill you want is not on the floor...anywhere...you can pay for it and create a
"Will call" and the assemblers, which come every week, will put them together
and then you will be called that your grill is ready. Just go and pick it up.
Buying it boxed--and putting one together yourself is NOT a fun thing to do.

IF there is any of these grills among the grill displays--you can just wheel it off to the
check out and it is yours.

Beeeep..........A message from your friendly HD associate-----Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks Gita- I fixed the link. And super thanks for the grill advice I liked the red one too.

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10b)

Sally - check dumpsters by craigslist, freecycle, apartment complexes, and the side of the road on bulk trash day. Maybe someone is moving or got a new grill for father's day. Why pay for something you can get for free (or cheap)?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmmmmmmmm....

Not sure i would want to cook my food on someone's discarded, used grill...
especially from a dumpster....

I am NOT a squeamish and picky person--really! I am NOT!
But that would just seem a bit gross....

Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I appreciate your trying to help GQ, but I really think it was best to pay 129 and get the red Brinkman basic grill. Parts to fix up our old grill or someone else's would add up fast, and also be a disgusting job.
