I've gotten two bare root plants, both Arbor Day Foundation specials--a crape myrtle tree last year, and magnolia 'Jane' this year. I have definitely found it more challenging to grow from bare roots--not something I want to do a lot of. But the first Arbor Day tree was free, and the magnolia this year was only about $15.

However, I was thrilled yesterday to go out and find the first tiny leaf on my magolia 'Jane'. I also recently planted my crape myrtle in the ground as opposed to the big 16" pot I've had it in the past year. Yay, big milestone!

1) Magnolia 'Jane' with her first tiny leaf--yay!
2) My little crape myrtle tree, in the ground at last. I put it on my curb strip with some protective chicken wire around it. I wonder if it will bloom this year?
