Spring Plant Swap 2014 Lucketts VA - Post Party

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, I know what you mean about finally being able to envision a space where before it was nothing or just random. Just yesterday, after getting so many of the new swap plants in the ground and transplanting others, I could finally envision my new back garden behind the shed--it was finally taking some shape. Of course, then I felt this sudden urge to look for some water-loving sedges and ferns for under the drip-line from the shed, but I was good and fought off the impulse to run to the nursery! :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Bigroot geranium would be a good plant for Terps memorial garden project, or any 'charity'/ volunteer type garden - easy to plant, looks reasonably good with no care. Along with Autumn joy sedum and any daylily, hey nice mix there.

I was going to comment that nobody mentioned daylilies once for this swap- but I think I saw a clump in one of the boxes there

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, so wonderfully put!

My yard is full of swap plants from all of you. The transformation of the back fence line in particular was only possible with your generosity, group buys, and bargain hunting. It was so disheartening as a new gardener to have half of my plants to die on me that I was ready to give up on it. Then I found DG!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Paul! It was an honest mistake that I forgot your Clivia. I think it was in the 'in between' zone where my stuff met with Critter's and it got overlooked :( I do appreciate getting it though!

Holly: What are you doing with that other half of your bigroot geranium? I could stop by after work and pick it up if you didn't have another place to put it.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

If you stop by you would be welcome to anything else we could dig for you. Where do you work, near York?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

One of my favorite take aways from the Swap were the special gifts from some very thoughtful people Thank you Gita for the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and how it was your daughter's favorite! And sweet Cheryl greeting me with a wonderful 'wrought iron' garden candle lamp! And all the hugs and kisses and smiles and help. I was moved to tears of joy innumerable times one of the last of which was young sir August who made a special point to come up to me as I was leaving to tell me he was sorry we didn't have time to finish our game of soccer! He gave me a special free stone to take home.

And even though my name was last for the Gift Table I got just what I wanted!!!

the flamingos were fabulous!

Wondering who got the 1500 live LadyBugs???!!!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Sweet Holly! I work in East York off Campbell Road. If you know where Campbell Chain is and the Sheetz across from it, we're the next road down. Unfortunately, I can't do it any night this week. First opportunity would be Tuesday the 10th. We're going away for a long weekend.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I am not entirely sure where that is but from that area maybe a 1/2 hour NW drive. I am in no hurry to dig yet. I will Dmail you my Addy and you can map quest us and see when it would suit you to come.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I got the ladybugs, and immediately released them into our yard!

Here are a few pic for anyone that took my Silver Beacon Lamium

Mine are already in the ground, Holly.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow, 1500 lady bugs? How wonderful!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

nice, Holly! Mine is already in the ground, too. Keeping an eye on it and all my other new plants from the swap to make sure they like their spots...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Joyanna chose the other pink flamingo as our prize -- the one with the flower, of course. LOL At the pre-K "graduation," as each kid came forward the teacher announced their name and mentioned what they had said they wanted to be when they grew up. Her classmates' responses covered a wide range: house builder, Marine, policeman, teacher, professional wrestler... Joyanna wants to be a "flower planter."

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Flower planter--sounds like a great goal to me! LOL :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I love it! A flower planter!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Something to be written down in your "memory book"!!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Excellent Lamium Holly. I got a beacon silver and the archangel from you guys. I planted both in dry shade under a Cryptomeria. Hopefully they'll fill out nice there and spread about. Thanks again :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

My pleasure. I remember someone asked about the bloom so I thought I would post a pic of it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I looked at Sedums 'Angelina' and 'Blue Spruce' and realized how similar they were other than color... both supposed to be quite vigorous, also... couldn't decide which one I wanted to put in front, under my new little Japanese Snowbell tree, so I combined them! I figure they can duke it out for supremacy, LOL I had such generous amounts that I was able to install "patches" of both and still have some starts left over to pot up & propagate for the back yard. Thank you, thank you!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Speaking of snowbell trees. It is a beautiful tree.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Holly definitely is in need of psychological help. She is already potting things and marking them for the fall swap and she hasn't even planted all her new swap stuff yet. Is there a 12 step program for plant addicts?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow. Holly that is impressive!!

Step 1...?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Step 1: Acknowledge you are helpless in the face of this powerful addiction. ;-)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Hehehe

BTW, just throwing out there that I found that North Creek sells Lonicera Major Wheeler by the flat. I'm trying to root some of it, but if we can get enough for everybody, then.........
I believe that is my red honeysuckle.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

hi, Jan. I have 'Major Wheeler.' It has been a very nice, long-blooming cultivar for me so far this year. I have to admit I don't know much about rooting cuttings. Here is a photo:

Ohhhhh Ahhhhh.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It is PURTY for sure!!!!!

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

I have one too, although mine is a bit more orange than red. It roots easily (albeit slowly) by layering, so maybe you can try that as an alternative to taking actual cuttings.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Ric, I've been doing the same thing as Holly! Why dig it in the Fall when you can pot it up in the Spring...especially when what newcomers and others 'wish lists' are fresh in my mind.

When I first ventured from veggies and houseplants into 'ornamentals' my first 8 x 24 bed was just perfect and so pleasing to me...not a leaf out of place....and then those carefully selected and arranged plants and shrubs had the nerve to start to grow and it has been a daily fabulous version of chaos ever since!

"Plant a radish; get a radish.
Never any doubt!
That’s why I love vegetables;
you know what they’re about.

Plant a turnip; get a turnip.
Maybe you’ll get two.
That’s why I love vegetables;
you know that they’ll come through.

They’re dependable! They’re “befriendable”!
They’re the best pal a parent’s ever known.
While with children, it’s bewildering.
You don’t know until the seed is nearly grown
Just what you’ve sown.

So
Plant a carrot; get a carrot.
Not a Brussels sprout!
That’s why I love vegetables;
You know what they’re about!

Life is merry, if it’s very
Vegetarian!
A man who plants a garden
Is a very happy man.

Plant a beanstalk; get a beanstalk.
Just the same as Jack!
Then if you don’t like it,
You can always take it back.

But if your issue doesn’t kiss you,
Then I wish you luck.
For once you’ve planted children,
You’re absolutely stuck!

Every turnip green, every kidney bean,
Every plant grows according to the plot.
While with progeny,
It’s “hodge-podgenee.”

For as soon as you think you know what kind you’ve got,
It’s what they’re not!

So
Plant a cabbage; get a cabbage.
Not a sauerkraut!
That’s why I love vegetables;
You know what you’re about!

Life is merry if it’s very
Vegetarian.
A man who plants a garden
Is a very happy man!"

Cute Judy, Since I've always been a gardener, I was always careful where I sowed my seed. I have no worries about wild oats. Our cultivar is a hybrid to be proud of.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Bwahaha, Holly may be at Step 1, but I doubt there's a desire to overcome this addiction. :)

Jill, I do the same thing with Blue Spruce and Angelina. They're very pretty when planted together and they bloom at the same time. I'll keep going with my Angelina "farm" so I can offer more this fall!

And that snowbell tree at Aspenhill's is just beautiful.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Glad to know you grow those cultivars together too, Terri -- they'll be quite visible in their new location, and the two new purple salvias blooming there now add a nice contrast. :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I wanted the short trellis that the winter Jasmine is growing on for my Passi and it is too short for the Jasmine anyway. Only way to get it out was to cut off some of the Jasmine so I potted up a few pieces that had rooted to the ground and put the other cuttings in a bucket of water. I have gotten a few more plants in the ground today as well. Boy I really did get some very very nice plants from my wonderful generous friends.
Doesn't that Passi look happier with a taller trellis?

lovely!!
speaking of Passi- ssg- GUESS what I saw the day after Swap.

yup, Passion flowr shoots. They're so contrary!

I thought I would make a patchwork of several kinds of Sedum along the sidewalk but since two of them a re Blue spruce and Angelina, that's pretty much all I can do. THe others get eaten if I'm not vigilant. I love how they blend and spill, then I cut them back and share.

Quote from CatMint20906 :
Step 1: Acknowledge you are helpless in the face of this powerful addiction. ;-)

Right hand in the air-----I solemnly swear that.............ahem....:

--I acknowledge that I have NO control in the plants I grow. They grow themselves...
--I have (almost) NO control re the plants I buy. They just jump in my cart. Need higher carts!
--The Devil in me makes me propagate every leaf and cutting and stem. NOT ME!!! BE GONE DEVIL!
--As G-d is my witness--I had NO Intention of having 60 AV's that have yet to bloom in 4 years!
--Same goes for my CC's! JB--It is ALL your fault! You are the instigator of my CC addiction!
--I confess that ALL plants have a strangle-hold on me! Cut them roots! They are the strings that hold me!
--And--most of all---I realize that EVERYONE on DG is an enabler to all the above.
***I confess----That it will NEVER change--as long as I live (here)....on DG.

PHEW!!! I feel all cleansed....................teeee..Heee..... Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, that's too funny! And who eats your sedums? I don't think mine are bothered by any pests at all.

Holly, is your passion flower tropical or the hardy variety?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

ROFL, Gita! :-D
