Requests for future RU's

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I don't know about anyone else but I was thinking about how some things we would like to have that others have access to may be a reason to put up a list of what we would like to get or things we wouldn't mind getting and can't. Some of us have limited space to bring things like I couldn't bring bags of leaves to Arlington but I could to Hempstead.

Just a thought as I collect egg shells and dry them and crush them for compost, around tomatoes for the calcium to help with blossom end rot. So I could start now (I do anyway) but for some who may want some come the fall I can put some aside to bring. That way I am not trying in the 2 weeks ahead to save them.

Others have access to coffee grounds some of us don't (like me) but would like to have. No rushing trying to find some when time for RU. I can even bring some buckets and either exchange them with the person bringing them or leave for next time or possibly dump from yours to mine. No paying 5 dollars or more for a bucket you never see again.

Also I have a place that sells buckets with lids ( had pickles or something in) for $2.00 each. I know free buckets are getting harder to come by. I could pick up some of those to trade or you could reimburse me for. Limited space but if something I could bring with my plants in or bring 10 or so each spring and fall RU you and everyone would soon have enough as it is not like we are not coming. Even broken mini blind or cheap at resale shops over the several month we have till the next RU. If you want some or are looking maybe post for others to be on the look out. You may live where no resale stores or a neighbor may give you some and you have too many yo ever use them all. Pots if you use small, large, clay, saucers, yard art. Someone may craft and love to share like Ted did at yesterday's RU. He made Hyper turffa pots. And Tx_flower_child brought me alot of beautiful things.

Anyone wanting egg shells. Post here and I will make sure I don't use all I save but start now saving for others.

If you are looking for a hard to find plant you truly dream of well we could be keeping an eye out for it.

Ok I think I have come up with an idea for this thread. When you have something or find something that you will have for the next RU please post it here at the bottom and also under where you link takes people. That way the thread gets bumped up and also allows others who are new to this check it out and join us or us who are here to check and see what is new and remember what is available.

I want to please ask that we keep the chat to a minimum. If something is offered by someone and you would like to know a little more (say someone offers palm plants) you can ask which they are so they have a chance to clarify which it is.

Please add or delete things as they become available or are no longer available. even if you have wants and nothing available that is fine and the other way also if you have offers but no wants.

example TX_Flower_Child if you more pots you could say I have added more pots and have listed the amount and sizes in my link. Please feel free to dmail me for the next RU if you are attending and also post to the Trade thread as a reminder of what I am bringing you. Also we can add who and what we are bringing someone to our linked post. This will also serve as if you have 10 things you have 2 spoken for others know you have 8 more available.

Keep in mind it is not necessary to post you have 10 red salvia but that you always have seedlings or plants available of red salvia to pot up. The numbers are more for pots and not for plants. Feel free if you want to use your link as your personal inventory to do that too. I just ask that you keep it updated as what you had for a spring RU may not be available for Fall or Visa Versa. I am trying to keep this as simple as possible.

Then when RU is over we can delete that. Most of you I know very well but if you are new please don't get excited and ask so the person holds them and you don't know if you will make it.

If you ask make sure you will be there or make arrangements to meet and get them before the RU. No holding for those who might come not fair to or other members.

If you have any other suggestions please let me know either here or Dmail me pls. I am adding this to the top post also as something everyone who comes by can see.

I think this is a great way to share our extras or find things we are always looking for either 1 time or each RU.

Ok here we go. This is where you can find wants and a list of what the DG member has plenty of or access to year round or atleast from one RU to another

It is an excellent idea Sandy, thank you for thinking of it.
Maybe we could have lists within the thread for each person like for the plant trades.
What do you think?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I think that would be a great idea. We can add to or list as we think of things we would like as I know I think of things after the RU I wish I ask for and vice a versa on my offerings.

Mine would be (other than plants)

Garden art (anything as I love it all) whirly gigs signs, rocks, metal, glass...I absolutely love anything hummingbird. including any you no longer use feeders, Bird houses bat houses, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, home made planters

Joy has me covered for manure 2 times a year :)
Joy if no one speaks for egg shells I would take them or some of them
Joy Variegated Jewel of Opar

I can get buckets with lids for $2.00 each (I think they are 5 gallon) they are from a BBQ place
saving all

egg cartons
Orange cannas
Orange/yellow cannas
EE's (runners)

As we finish making our way back from Kentucky, I am jealously reading about the RU yesterday. Tired, happy and ready to unload a bunch of dogs at the house, I will reserve this space for a time when my brain is functioning better.
Great idea, BTW.
I usually have tons of leaves, oak, and always the manure. Don't have to collect it, it seems to collect all by itself. Also have multitudes of ducks, and can save folks eggshells too.

Sage wants to know if we are there yet.

HAVE

Variegated Jewels of Opar rooted cuttings
Katrina Rose rooted cutting
Tall Mexican Petunia Blue and Pink
Can save Heirloom giant zinnia seeds
Tons of variegated canna,

Manure, fresh and old
Oak leaves

Hi, Joy! How did your crew do? We missed you, of course.

I have access to a lot of plastic containers with lids that dog biscuits come in from Cosco. I am using some for butterflies to eclose in. Instead of using the lid, I put paper towel over the container with rubber band. They are about 7" tall by 8" long by 3" wide. and dishwasher safe. They are translucent not transparent. If this sounds like something you could use, then let me know to save them for you.

So proud of my guys. Jammin was second first go round (out of 67) by only one point and was seventh the second round for a fifth place in the average. My pup, Sage, went out for the first time in any field trial and missed her sheep day one but found them day two and was one of only three dogs in her class (45) to get a pen. We finished out of the money but she was along for the ride anyway. My student/dear friend Liz showed her young dog in the Novice class to a third place. It was the first time to the post for both of them and the competition was extremely tough.
Lite didn't go because of having a litter. I didn't get her fit enough to be able to cover the distances involved.
Got to see more of those darn peonies I can't grow, and lots of irises. We had a great time.

Dallas, TX

Sandy - while I was reading your list of all things birds, I remembered an ad I saw a few weeks ago in a flyer from a local hardware store. They were selling hummingbird swings! Anybody ever heard of a hummingbird swing???? (I'm biting my tongue right now b/c I can think of all kinds of snarky answers.) I really do want to know.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

I'd love to have:

Blackfoot daisy
Coneflowers, no purple or orange
Ocotillo
Palo verde
Palms
Agaves, yucca, cacti, succulents
Ornamental grasses
Mexican flame vine
Clematis
Bulbs and iris

I have to offer:
Daylily, 'Crimson pirate'
Mexican petunia, purple
Pitcher sage small plants
Spineless opuntia paddles (I can root for you)
Vitex cuttings, seeds (bee magnet)
Egyptian walking onion bulblets, rooted
Hens and chicks (sempervivens), small plants
3 gallon nursery pots
Gallon milk jugs (wintersowing anyone?)
Seeds, lots of varieties, see my tradelist :)

Have been out working in the yard yesterday and today (Monday was jury duty day for me) and find all sorts of things and plants that I COULD have brought to the RU but never thought about it until I started making a mental list of plants that I meant to dig out last fall and make go away (mainly daylilies whose colors I don't particularly care for)... or divide... or whatever.
I did bring all the extra grower's pots I'd been hoarding and now, three days later, wish I'd kept just a few for me... Never fear, that just means another trip to the nursery to get more pots... wait! I mean plants that have pots attached.

And a thought: When taking things/plants to trade at places like the RU, I tend to not include items I don't think anyone would want. After attending two Roundups though, I've about decided that almost any item or plant is fair game and someone can use it, plant it, or find a use for it. In the future, I'm going to try to include a bigger variety of whatever I may have at the time and let the participants decide if they can use it or want it.

Steve, on that note, I was surprised that someone, maybe you, brought boxes of DampRid. I love that stuff and keep it in all of my too few closets. (House was built in the late 40s.) Spend a lot of money on it. I was absolutely delighted to get a box at the RU.

Dallas, TX

Tx_Flower_Child is reserving this space for future have and want lists.

HAVE
- Pots. Lots and lots of pots. 4" pots. Quart size pots. Big pots. Even bigger pots. Some I don't know how to describe 'em pots. And more to come.
- Flats. The plain old flat flats. The flats that are made for holding 4" pots. And the non-flat flats that are kinda molded to hold larger pots.
- Slats from broken mini-blinds (thank you, cats)
- 4 o'clock seeds of various colors.
- Mexican petunias if they survive liberation.
- Bird feeders: shapes and sizes TBD.
- Coffee grounds (if room in my car)
- Oak leaves (also depends on room in my car)

WANT
- Compost
- Shredded hardwood mulch
- Damp Rid
- Gallon jugs for seed sowing

flower child: I think it was Ted that brought the Damp Rid.
Steve

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes it was Ted.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes, I agree! I was also happy to get done damp rid from Ted. He had to twist my arm at first, lol, then I read the box and was happy to have it. Same for the outdoor bugspray barrier.. Very nice :)

SPWD outdoor bug spray or any bug spray is nice but remember as you poison the bugs you are also poisoning the things that eat the bugs. Lizards, geckos, frogs and toads. Just wanted to remind you. :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

You know I honestly never thought of that.. I have to use it around my kids' door since scorpions and centipedes come in through it, even with weatherstripping, but I may refrain from using it around the rest of the perimeter of the house since I know now. I used to use all natural TKO orange oil but I haven't been able to get it anymore without buying it online.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I make a cleaner out of orange peels and vinegar. I cut the orange peel in strips about 1/8th inch wide and put into a bottle fill with white vinegar and leave it in the sun a few weeks. Drain out the vinegar into a spray bottle and it works great on so many things. It does turn a dark color after sitting around but works great even on water marks in a vase it removes it.

They say you can use grain alcohol and orange peel chopped fine. I have done this but haven't taken the time to pour it out and let the alcohol evaporate. I really think the expense of the alcohol doesn't result in much oil. Wouldn't do that again as even though I haven't finished to see what I get I am sure not enough so will buy it not make it.

Mesquite, TX

I believe I read somewhere that a somewhat strong mix of Pine-Sol (original, not the lemon scented) in water or possibly even the Dollar Store equivalent works to deter bugs from coming in the house when sprayed around door and window openings. I know that it works to deter ants... However it works be that good or bad, it'll make everything smell good ;o)
Steve

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

It is also recommended food grade diatomaceous earth. around the area or around your house. Also putting in yellow light bulbs around instead of white as it doesn't attract as many bugs for the scorpions to eat. diatomaceous earth kills alot of bugs they eat.

Thank God I have never seen one here. I have the small geckos all around my front door (outside) and they take care of bugs for me. For year I sprayed everything and had an exterminator...I have an abundance of lizard, geckos, toads, tree frogs blue tail skink or salamanders and I love them. Marty mentioned seeing a small outside roach being eaten and thi8s light went on and I figure that is why I don't see many.

Now if they would just eat the grasshoppers when they are babies but nothing eats the black and red ones...but my foot has a great time. :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Great tips for bug control!! I'll try them and see if it works :)

I have a lot of scaly friends on my property too, would hate to hurt them! We had a outside cat but he disappeared.. I miss him, I really do, but when he was around he would eat the lizards and I would scold him big time! I've seen quite a few more since he's been gone. We have grasshoppers up the yazoo already, they're still small, but they do a lot of damage as they grow. And sandy you are right, once they get big, nothing eats them :(

... and insecticides also adversely affect bees, butterflies, ladybugs, and
caterpillars.

We need to think these things through.

The only ones I draw the line out and use bug killer on are fire ants. If it comes down to me or them, THEY go ! Even is they do cultivate the soil well :)

Rancho Santa Rita, TX(Zone 8a)

The big hoppers are prolly too
tough for anyone to find the tasty,
just like an old rooster

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

Sorry I missed the RU...have been really busy this month!!! I like your idea a lot Sandy & will keep this on my thread watch!!
I miss you all already!!! hahahahahahaha

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Cindy love's link is actually to Txflowerchild's list.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Thanks Marty. I am surprised I didn't mess up more of them. :)

Marty do you want a link so you can list things?

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, Sandy, Thanks.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

You got it :)

Here's my 2 cents and maybe more about bug stuff. But first, I'm a little fascinated about SPWD having a 'kids door'. I keep picturing something like a dog door but I know that can't be right. :D

So, one thing to add to the list of critters that could be adversely affected by bug sprays: kids. Wouldn't want to have toxins on a yard that kids roll around on and do whatever it is they do. Just a thought.

Not sure if I've shared this before, but I have a great recipe for keeping mosquitoes away from me. (They've always loved me.) I think I adapted it from Howard Garrett aka the Dirt Doctor. There are a couple must have ingredients and then the rest is up to you. Here goes.

In one of those small plastic spray bottles that are usually found around the hair or cosmetic areas of drugstores, etc, combine 1 cup of water, 2 tsp vanilla extract, and 1 tsp orange oil. (Altho it costs more, it's better to use essential oils - mine is 'sweet orange'). It's also good to add pure essential oil of cinnamon leaf. Anywhere from a few drops to 1 tsp. Shake it all up and spray on liberally.

When I say 'the rest is up to you', here's what you can do depending on personal preference. Add 1 or more of the following essential oils: lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus or (even better) lemon eucalyptus, tea tree oil, mint, etc. Whatever you use, you'll smell good and the bugs will keep their distance.

I wouldn't promise that this will be true for everyone, but I have never had this mixture stain my clothes. And if I don't use the spray (b/c I think I'll only be outside for a minute), I wind up getting bit.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Flowerchild you justade me literally LOL w the kids door comment! Nice visual! Hehehe :D

My sons' room has a door that leads outside, hence the 'kids door', not very cool but dangit, I want a tiny door now, ala Alice in Wonderland!

So many great organic bug spray options guys! Thanks so much for the tips! I'll post updates when I try something, just to share successes for anyone else who might wanna give them a shot :)

Dallas, TX

So you're LOL?

Good news. On two counts. One is that I went for a walk. The other would be of more interest to y'all. This is our bulk trash pick up week in my area of Dallas. On my walk I saw where people had left large plastic pots on the curb so I took them home and will save them til fall. Also scored 2 hanging planters minus the hangers. Since we never know what day the trucks come to mush it all away to the landfill, if I can beat the trucks, I'll go for another walk this evening. I also saw a discarded door with umpteen glass panels. If someone might want it, I can see if a neighbor with a truck will help me bring it home.

Dallas, TX

I noticed in another forum that some of y'all were talking about Mexican petunias. Spoke with my cousin today and she is going to be liberating Mexican petunias in the next week or so. I can ask for extras if anyone is interested. These are the purple ones. About 18" tall. (She knows they might be invasive but has a lot of space for them.)

She said she thinks they are evergreen. I grew them in Austin and have no memory of whether they were evergreen in that climate.

However, would these still be alive and kicking until the Fall RU? Maybe would have to wait until next spring. Aargghh. I don't know. Just know that the offer is now out in there in case anyone still looks at this thread.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You could pot them and bring them to the R.U.

Dallas, TX

I know I could pot them. I just have so many things to pot or pot up or plant if I can ever get a new bed dug. Hmmm. Maybe I can get my cuz to pot some. After all, I've got lots of pots she could use!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

I bet she wouldn't mind potting them :)
