2014 Seed Starting, Part 3

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Evelyn, I have enjoyed your posts as well :)

Robin, nope didn't get any hits on my wintersowed roselle either. I will try Deno when I get home. They are in my ziploc labeled 'dying to start' LOL!!

Or is it too late for me to start seeds? Oh who am I kidding, I have empty shelves at home, well 3 shelves anyway, and I am raring to fill them :))

Juhur are you still looking for golden groundsel for your butterflies? I came home with a few mystery plants from roundup, and they have been ID'd as that, I can mail you one if you like..

Might be a little off topic here, but we're in Corpus Christi, TX for the weekend and looksie what I found.. What type of seed do you suppose this is?

Hmm Becky, looks like a mini burnt hamburger bun. Do I win the prize?

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Lol I would have no idea , but it looks like acacia ,nearest I have seen , not a true match ,oh well .

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Lots of planting this weekend, both my seedlings and those bought from Graceful Gardens, Bluestone and local nurseries. Just a few things left now. This is the most caught up I've ever been, and there is still a ton to do... How can that be?!

Good news: All the Salvia Azurea are back, including the little S Nekan I grew from seed last year. That was I nice surprise, I was sure it was toast. Sooooo cute... I'll try to get a pic before we leave today.

All the pots are planted, best looking seedlings I've ever had. I think it must be the Peter's fert, everything really took off when I started using it. I only did 12 strength because of the continuous watering, but what a difference!

Blue pots: Datura La Fleur, Lobelia Riviera Splash, Torenia Kauai Blue (really purple, oh well).

Hanging baskets: Petunia Easy Wave, Lobelia White Cascade.

Iris Cristata-- Kathy, did yours take? Mine are really spreading, makes me very happy, lol!

Platycodon Astra Blue seedlings blooming. The ones in the garden from last year are up, but it will be a while before they get going.

Lupine from seed a couple of years ago...

Helianthus laetiflorus, from seed 2012, gone wild... The tall stalks show the size of the crown from last year. Yikes! It wants to take over the world!

More pics later...

Wow yes, very pretty indeed Pam!

Mipii, I posted my hamburger seed on the ID forum and it's mucuna (either m. urens or m. sloanei), but the funny thing is it's common name is sea bean plant or hamburger bean! Too funny!

Juhur, I like your wild plants! And more importantly, so do the flutterbys!

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Pam....I'll look tomorrow on that Iris...sure hope it made it....it's gorgeous!!!

juhur.... wait and see that Iris when it fully opens...there are NO standards only falls and the fragrance is fabulous!!!! (Jasmine like).

Haven't even begun thinking about planting yet. Been busy weeding..backyard is almost done enough to begin tho. Going to start weeding the front bed tomorrow, (watered today so it would be easier). It's begun to warm up here so I'll spend mid day potting things up now. Stopped today at my fav. nursery and went thru the recycle bins for more pots...fillled the car and will make another run in a day or so.

Couple of new plants from the nurseries this spring...Centuarea montana 'Amethyst Dream', a rich purple/redish, got 'Blackie' last summer and hope for a good show this year. Iberis hybrid 'Pink Ice', candytuft, so I'm guessing it's a spring bloomer unless it's a cross of I. 'Autumn Beauty' which blooms spring and fall. (Hope, hope, hope). will have to make a list of the others..lol.

Ok, ya all have a good week....Kathy

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Also I need some seed advice (Red Agave , wild from Texas ) how to , ?

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Robin ~ You win the plant ID contest....hamburger bean! (Well, close, huh?)

I had some wintersowed plants that were almost dried out, but looking alive...Iris tectorum. Someone said to sow them and then don't check until spring. They were tucked away one a shelf on the back porch.

I cleaned up the others, most were dried out. The white Leonitis menthifolia was hanging in there, so I planted them. If I can remember to keep them watered, they will be tough ones to remove. I have never seen them before, so I always have surprises in store.

Robin ~ Please d-mail me when you are ready for me to send you some plants. Geranium phaeum and what else???Strawberries? I think I will pack some plants ready to ship on Monday.

Anyone want any Verbascum 'Southern Charm'? Also strawberries....I have loads! Ajuga, white daisies....a few others, I am sure...

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Ju try the Texas gardening forum to ask about 'how to' for Agave. They've got some pretty talented gardeners there.

Evelyn, you're so sweet...I won...who-hoo! Lol. I'm thinking I need a lottery ticket now. I'll D-mail you.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Juhur, just realized I forgot to send the groundsel! I will on Monday :)

Also, is it a red agave? Or a red yucca? Never seen a red agave before but I think that would be a hubba hubba kinda moment for me as I love all things spiky :))

Robin, I'll send you a coupon for a free hamburger!! LOLOL!!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

The accidental pawpaw seedlings.. First pic shows my nosiness, I scooped one out to see what kind of action was happening below the surface. Long taproot so far, gonna put them directly into 3 gal tree pots.

SWPD) I am not sure yet what it is , I will try starting it like Yucca ,
There is a red Agave house plant though ,
Some nice Dg'er sent me two Groundseal that came yesterday , But I will appreciate another , The more the merrier and the better ..

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Becky, your Paw Paw's look great, thanks for posting progress. I'm a bit of a foodie too, hence the hamburger reference...Chef Gordon would have shut the kitchen down for that one.

I'm packing about 10 extra pounds (please don't feed the animals)...lol.

At any rate, instead of a coupon (thanks for the offer though) please indulge us with what method and when you sowed those Paw Paw's. Be prepared to get peppered with requests for follow-up pics. I wanna see more!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Juhur, okay great, yes the more the merrier indeed :)

Robin, I received the pawpaw seeds from the university of kentucky, and after a week of waiting to be sorted into my stash, I noticed they started sprouting while sitting in the potting mix they were sent in. Supposedly they keep them refrigerated so they don't dry out. The care instructions they sent with the seeds stated that if you allow them to dry out, even after just a few weeks, germination can drop from 80% to less than 20%

Of the 11 seeds I received, I have 10 sprouts :)

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Shoot, that's so lucky. That kind of scenario makes things easier, now I remember you talking about it...duh!

I WS two in the large plastic pop bottles, I drilled drainage holes filled with potting mix, sowed seeds knuckle deep and sunk them into the soil. I inverted a translucent container over them and thought all would be well. Since there is no action, I'm guessing I failed.

It's time to pull the rest out of the fridge and try again...or eat hamburgers. Thanks

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I have tried the Paw Paw before . year before last a couple a foot tall , too many ants ,to much sun , The three from seed never really "got Growing "
The other story ; As my Yellow poplar does better , My wild dogwood is growing , shade ..he he .
I have a real small Shagbark Hickory and some kind of Oak that came up in the Garden (on their own ,, ( nothing to do with me ) Wild weed theory of Gardening ,,lol

Or is it the tree thing , swinging from , or out of ,, so the tree are coming back ,?

Sounds like the squirrels are helping you garden Ju...I appreciate all the help I can get. If I don't recognize the seedling, it stays until it can be identified. I got a really nice Juniper and a Purple leaf plum that way. Only thing is, what the squirrels plant the rabbits come and defoliate, it's real tough to come out ahead.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Robin ) I was shopping for potting soil , a while ago , Bought a few herb plants , a couple seed packets ,
Dug some tomato planting holes and stakes ,
Bought some Herb starting mix ,
A Centaurea Scabiosa is blooming ,,
I believe a knautia Arvensis is growing in my wintersow cans , I will plant that and see ..

Squirrels , Rabbits , ground Hogs , Raccoons , the occasional Possum ,, Voles , Mice , Rats , Cats , Dogs , Birds , Kids , Hail , You name it !!!

Lest we should forget BUGS!!! ..^_^ lol

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Evelyn...Me, (I'm waving my hand for the Verbascum!!! I had one of those in the garden years ago and it died out so I'ld love another..... Do they reseed for you? My V. phoenicium does..... (And strawberries if no other takers....LOL). What can I sent in return? Or you want some moolah...?

Yes, they re-seed, and that's why I have so many. they won't all fit into my new bed. How many would you like? 6?

Springfield, OR(Zone 8a)

We built our "salad bar," to see if we can still be getting lettuce once the tomatoes appear. Northeast exposure. Kale and marigolds too. I'll post pics when it's all set up. My kale behaves very weirdly, no matter where I plant it or how much light it gets. It likes to lie down yet keeps putting out leaves.

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Evelyn, oh yes, six would be lovely or however many you have that you want to get rid of... LOL, I have a whole backyard to work on this summer and most of the babies I put in during late fall didn't make it. (But those I put in a holding bed after the others went into the beds, made it thru the winter...think that's where I should have planted them all!!!)

Ok, Southern Charm is not the one that is sterile..... (I had the V. that was. and that is the one that died out).. Thankyou!!! Big hugs, and let me know if you want something in return...or me to send $$$ first.... Kathy

OBTW...I'm still weeding, any offers to come help? LOL, comeon, I know there has to be a helper out there somewhere.....

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well here's an Amarylis iris from someone we all know, Shhh named Kathy )

Wow....this is a crazy thread....and it's already been re-started how many times because the old ones got too long?!? (^_^) Love it!

I've been trying to follow along, but it's just too much. I noticed a comment from way back (April, maybe?) from Juhur about being from Texas. Now I can't even find the section where everyone was talking about Texas! LOL!

But, Hi from Texas, Juhur! We're from the same area! I went to the "old" stadium when I was about five years old to play on brand new turf that even the Cowboys had not yet touched. Wish someone had gotten pics back then. :p
Now I'm in far north Texas. If I do a hop, skip and a little jump, I get my feet wet in the Red River and Okies start shooting at me! (Ha ha...not really. They're good neighbors!)

I was looking for some tips on getting seedlings to start growing after being potted-up, but I think I'll just give them another shot of watered-down fish fertilizer and finish reading this thread instead! (^_-)

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Helloooooo Texas! Welcome, Rookerie!

Yes, this thread has been going on for a while... For my zone, all the action has moved outside now. I still have lots of seedlings in pots. The annuals are easy, they do their while life cycle in one season so they go right into the garden.

But the perennials are a different story. I have to decide whether to pot them up, plant them in a holding bed, or put them out in the garden. Platycodons, for instance: last year, I had a bunch of P Perlmutterschale, a lovely , soft silvery pink. They were started in late December, and by April were blooming under the lights. I put them out in the garden where I wanted them to end up, and inter-planted lightly with annuals. They never bloomed again, and never got more than a few inches tall. For the entire season, I had to make sure the annuals didn't smother them, kept pruning, pulling out, etc, so I had a huge blank in the middle of the bed. This spring, they all made it. I hope they make a better showing!

This year I have a new batch... Hmmmmmm. Platys have the rep of being difficult to move, which is why I put the babies in place last year. But I've moved other Platy plants a lot, especially young, always careful to dig deep around the taproot and add a rooting aid when planting, and have gotten away with it. I'm thinking bigger pots, or a holding bed for this year's newbies.

On the other hand, I have a bunch of Campanulas I think should go directly into their places. The Clips series, I have both blue and white, supposedly blooms the first year from seed. I hope that's true! And C Pyramidalis is short-lived but a prolific self-seeder, I'd like to get that going.

Most of the other perennial seedlings are already planted out, even the Linum, scrawny little things. They looked so much more substantial in pots on the shelf, but in the garden...puny. Amazing how that is!

hello Rookerie) Welcome to the thread , as everyone just ask about your seedlings , or past em in pic , and see what the answer might be,, lol your choice of dozens ,,
Mine are outside now .
I have been in the garage devising a water fountain , nothing fancy , maybe , only workable .. I eight years old again ,, lol multiply that a few times and then again ,,

Looking good there Pfg , Big sigh , you have a couple of my hopes .. lol

Hey rainy cloudy and misty here ,
good for plants
BIG Smile ^_^

Kathy ~ Are you looking to fill in a sunny or shady space? Moist, medium or dry?

For sun I have asters. veronica, phlox, daisies, and mums, and I will wait until the goldenrod blooms before I dig it up to divide it. I have many things for the shade in my shady nook, which is filling out and up quickly. Ferns, sweet woodruff, primroses....I can't think of all of them right now...brunnera, violets, pulmonaria.....

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Kathy, if I lived closer, I would gladly come weed for you. Might be hard to resist a pinch of this seed, a cutting here and there.. LOL! You'd be like, hey my weeder cleaned me out!! :D

Rookerie, well howdy neighbor!! This thread is awesome, the people and the tips :))

Pam, that is a marvel idea, a holding bed for wimpy transplants! Yet another thing to add to the todo list.. Wish that darn list would shrink but alas it only grows longer by the day..

Springfield, OR(Zone 8a)

That's why it's called the "todo" - everything - list.

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Turtles..lol. Yup todo everything list... I think mine gets longer evryday and I find myself adding some of the same things over and over a few weeks later...(WEEDING)

Thanks for the offer Becky!!! Truely appreiciated.. but I did get an offer today at garden club from one of the gals and in a few days I might just change my mind and give her a call, just depends on how much I can get done....Yikes...Weeds!!!!!!!

Welcome Rookeri!!! Ask away, all questions welcomed...never too dumb so don't be shy.. That's how we learn from each other. (Besides...no questions are dumb, no matter how experienced!)
Like Juhur said, you may get a few different answers and may find that there are a few ways to do things, so have to try and find which works for you...

Hey Pam, was wondering where you've been... or maybe you were wondering where I was...lol.... Weeding...I finally decided it's time to get out my light that attatches to a stand..(floodlight on a 3 ft stand). Perfect for night time WEEDING..lol..OK, then I'll use it for night time planting..... Forgot I even had bought it a few years back, was making a joke aboout working outside after dark and remembered I had bought it... Ya, what was that string on my finger for again....duh!!! The one I had before didn't have a stand so I use to pile up pots upside down to get it up off the ground so I could see what I was doing....this one attatches to a telescoping stand...nifty huh?!!!! Don't know how I forgot that I had bought one... Oh BTW, my platties are still on the porch...but I promise when the weeds are done planting begins!!!!

Gosh, did I mention that I have atleast 1000-2000 annuals( I lost count) to plant..and that doesn't include the perenns that I seeded....OMG.....someone shoot me....(only joking) No please don't, I have too much to plant..lol. Later ....Kathy

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

OMG, Kathy... Good luck to you in getting it all done!!! I've missed you, but figured you've been out there non-stop weeding and planting, weeding and planting!

This is the first year I don't have dozens of flats out there waiting for attention, only a few. Two more flats in the city window, bringing them out to the country on Friday. Two Clematis Silver Moon arriving tomorrow, and one more delivery of a flat of Mum plugs next week, and that's it. Whew! I've never been this far ahead at this time of year!

I owe you some plants, but figure you're not ready. No rush on this end, they'll wait.,

I'm excited to be getting back to the house, it's been 10 days since we were there. I had work last weekend and several days during the week, so it was impossible to go. Last time we were there a few things were still breaking dormancy, and lots of stuff went in the ground. There have been some nice warm days since then, so I'm expecting that all those plants will be up and running by now. What's left to plant is mostly annuals and small edging and accent plants, and by the time I get there it should be obvious where they will fit in.

I'm zeroing in on the final choices for garden helpers. The guy who leans on his shovel and chats about problems in his garden that don't interest me is on his way out. So is the lady who 'knows her weeds' but only takes them out in the open areas and leaves them in the crown of good plants.

The skinny little teenager who lives 5 minutes away isn't much of a weeder in the perennials, but she does know her veggies, and she's great at schlepping bags of mulch and whatever else I ask her to do. I can use her for small projects. She's also available when we're not there to water the pots, etc. She rides her bike over. .

And the big winner is: The newly certified Master Gardener who can't make a living at it. She's working as a nurse on the 3-11 shift, which leaves mornings and weekends free to garden. Perfect! She doesn't know everything going on in my garden, but she knows things I don't. Hopefully she will help me cut down on mistakes, and maximize the garden's potential. It will be great to have someone knowledgeable enough to bounce ideas off of. And best yet, she's happy to work only the number of hours I can afford!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Pfg , Nice to be ahead ,, hmmm I know the feeling is in my memory someplace ,,lol

Oh , yes ,, I am the guy leaning on the shovel ,, lol sounds exactly like me .. ^_^

Sounds like you all have been busy ,,
