We'll be waiting with you, Marilyn.
Clematis 2014
So beautiful! I have such zone envy of both of you.
Annette - my peonies are only up about 5-6". We are supposed to warm up at the end of this week, so I am hoping they all shoot up.
Yeh, we are suppose to warm up, but with that warm weather is coming rain. I need to get 2 bags of garden soil moved before it rains and they get even heavier...lol
So lovely, Annette. Picture perfect!
Pretty, Etelka.
Carolyn and Marie - our turn will come!
I'm finding so many clematis babies all over. I guess they enjoyed the endless snow more than any of us did.
Peonies & clems look so pretty together.....hope mine bloom at the same time.....
Me too! All but 2 showed growth as of Monday... And I have a brand new C Texensis Princess Diana to add to the mix. Soon...
More and more buds but no blooms yet.
I have a NOID pink peony that flowers when my C. Proteus flowers. It was something that happened accidentally, but I am very happy with how it turned out.
My husbands's son is coming this week and he is going to put up a pergola over the grill area on the deck. So I ordered C. Tangutica and C. Trikatrei to climb up the pergola and then I saw C. Luxuriant Blue on Brushwood's website as well, so I had to order that one too.
Hurray for the pergola, your husband's son and all the new clematises! Will you use wire on the wood poles (for the pergola) so the clem's can climb?
Arlene
That is exactly what I am thinking.....
I have a climbing rose on the opposite post on the same side that has struggled for years, I am thinking of training it to climb up that post as well. I put in for Brushwood to notify me when they had C. Viticella back in stock so I could have that wind it's way through the rose - it is a yellow climber and the purple and yellow should mimic the purple and yellow on the other side.
I have a pergola on my back door as well and put in C. Huldine and C. Perle D'Azure on that one. This should be their leap year, so I am excited to see what happens this year.
Have you been successful with climbing roses? It was only with the help of a DG California buddy that I trained my first one, Falstaff, last year. It seems they have to be trained starting around 4' and it was a struggle but worth it. I'm just trying to envision how you'll get it trained to bloom when it's climbing the posts. I attached a "before" and "after" photo. Now I just want more blooms.
You'll love the look of the clematises at your back door!
Arlene
I have New Dawns growing up the side of my house - but, yes, that is the side of my house and not a post. I was thinking of working them around the post so that I could get some lateral shoots, which I know are imperative to climbing roses. Time will tell if it works - the rose is already there. If it doens't work, then it will have to come out the C Viticella will be a loner there. ^_^
We used to have four climbers around the former vegetable garden, trained to the top rail, but they got out of hand too quickly and had to be deleted.
On the trellis in the rose garden, above, there really isn't sufficient room for the laterals of most climbers. Climbing Peace was lovely but it wanted to be 12' wide, not 4'. That also had to go to the dump. We'll see how long Falstaff gets to remain. I already have Niobe and Mrs. Bateman on the trellis. We gardeners are a devout group!
Marie - that's the ideal trellis for the clematis. Try getting a close-up photo and maybe we can all help identify it for you.
Wow it could be either one. I know I had bought both of them at one time...lol I think I am leaning more to Henry.
Here is a picture of my project this spring. The flower bed on the right use to go all the way straight back with a space between the bed going on an angle. I started last fall deciding how I want them to meet up and put a bath in between.
This it so far. I started with hauling all the red blocks over and getting my edge and entry to the walkway done. I transplanted some plants, moved some day lillies to there, added a few small shrubs.I put down my weed cloth for the path, gathered old pieces of small granite stone to add to the end of my path, because I did not want it to just end. and added the stone in the path ( which I thought were brown, but are blue) Then I have put down all the mulch this old sore body can do. Now just to wait for everything to finish filling in and blooming. The clems on that trellis is really going to set it off.

Such a pretty and restful looking spot, Marie. Keep us posted with more photos.
I'm ready to sit on your bench with a nice cool drink when the sun appears again. I am enjoying the rainy day!
I am too. it is giving me an excuse not to work outside. I am sore today. 20 bags of mulch, 4 bags of soil, moved in place this week.
Oh I found some Geraniums for 1.00 each at lowes, so I made up about 5 hanging baskets with them.
Nothing like planting geraniums for leisure time! LOL
I've put down many bags of the long needled pine mulch this past week and planted 76 lilies as well as caladiums, liatris, etc. The rain is like a sedative.
Oh you planted your Caladiums already? I guess I will get mine in the ground then. I got about 7 bags to do.
I'm risking it only because I'm tired of having so many plants to get in the ground. If I were sane I'd wait another week or two.
I only planted half of them!
II did do a few in the full sun area. But I was waiting on doing the shade ones. I figured it was still too cool there. I figured after mothers day I would do the rest.
I did plant the EE and canna's. they were growing in the bags and were getting too big in my temperary pots.
Heat wave is coming! I think I'll try to plant the rest of the caladiums tomorrow. My one canna is in the kitchen, in a pot.
The basement is dahlia territory.
I love your spot, Marie. It looks so peaceful there.
I, too, have caladiums to put in as well as some lily bulbs. I am still cleaning out beds, though. They kind of got away from me last year with a broken foot. ^_^
Great photos of the clems & roses growing together.....I am trying to get them to live nicely together, but either the clem vanishes or the rose does.......Red Rambler rose has taken over its trellis, & also the neighboring ones as well as my garage.....but the flowers are lovely & scented so it will stay......
Thanks Carroll, It has been a lot of work.
I am sorry to hear about the foot. Yes that can put a damper on getting things done.
Me, I have a bad back, so I do something and then rest a day..lol After the mulch and soil, I am resting a few days, It hurts to move.
Rain for the next few days so no planting here.
I have a few blooms opening up. Yippeee.....
Marilyn - I've only succeeded once for all the times I've tried so don't be discouraged. I'd keep the rose where it is. Scented roses are my favorites.
Marie - my back gives me grief, too. Pulling and lifting kills me. I keep going because if I didn't I know it wouldn't get done at all.
Happy Mother's Day!
Marie/Arlene -
I too have back problems. My back generally only hurts for a day or two after mulching and such, which is a small price to pay. I have found that the PT exercises they gave me several years ago help as well.
I took a responsibility of taking care of a ladies yard, her bushess and I had planted some flowers for her. A nice size yard with lots of bushess to trimm, but it makes me move arround more then usual. I lost 4 Lb, and my back feels better . I do get pay for it so It will help me to buy more flowers and bushess for the back yard that need a lots of attention.
Has anybody used some shade cloths, like fabric that you can make a part shade for the garden?? I am thinking about getting some of the fabric that comes 8 x 16 feet, use some poles and attached to my house and make some shade for the flowers that are burning up. Or maybe build a arbor and run some grapes on it to make shade. Any ideas and pictures please... Etelka
Mine is degenerative disc disease and leaning over in the half stopped position really causes pain - brushing my teeth is one of those awkward positions that begins the pain each day and then I'm in for more pain before bedtime.
That's good news, Etelka. I've never used shade cloth but look at the sails they sell on Amazon to create shade. Here's a link to them on BBB. http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/shelterlogic-12-foot-and-16-foot-sun-shade-sails/3250546?device=c&network=g&matchtype=&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_outdoorutility_&gclid=CLuTtbWFoL4CFYFQOgodMWcA9Q
All so pretty!
Hi. I am a newbie with clems, but I have been swooning over your gorgeous pics and trying to glean from your experience. I only have one Clem currently, and I don't think we were ever properly introduced, so I don't know the name.
Here's a question, though: many trellises seem to be metal, don't they scorch the vines? My summers do hit 90 occasionally.
Thanks for allowing me to lurk!
Turtle
I got the same as you Arlene as far as the back, and yes I understand those certain positions that set you off. I went to bed early last night and from being in the lying down position to long , I could barely get my legs pulled up to get out of bed this morning.
But yes If I did not do what I do in the yard it would not get done. I have to get my self out there today and weed wack and cut the grass before it rains again today. Hubby will watch...lol
But on the bright side. Look what I get to see as I lay by my 18ft pool round this summer.
I got to tell ya, my neighbor got this hot tub for 400.00. I thought, oh yeah, I bet that is a real good one.
But I got to tell ya, It is not as fancy as those 3000.00 ones, but it is a real nice one. I am really thinking about that with this spine and knees. You could use one too Arlene.
Ooh, a hot tub sounds so nice this time of year! Turtle, I have 3 clems on a tall metal trellis, & there has never been a problem for me.....we do get about six 90 degree days here.....My other clems are on small metal trellises, mixed with roses, & facing south......they seem to do OK, but not as well as the ones facing west.
Welcome, 13turtles! Lurk all you want and maybe we can help you identify the cultivar so you'll have a name for it. Where did you buy it and what color is it? We have many trellises of metal and the heat doesn't bother or burn the clematis tendrils.
Marie - you know who would have to take care of the hot tub, right?
Like Marilyn, we get 6 to 10 days of 90 or over each summer and while I stay in the AC, the clem's don't mind it at all.
Welcome Turtle
I have metal trellis's, fences and towers and the clems don't mind them at all. We have had some strange weather over the last several years with some of our days in the summer topping out at over 100 degrees. As long as the roots are kept moist, the clems are fine and the metal doesn't seem to burn the plants.
Would love to see your pictures. You do know that growing clematis is a very contagious addiction, don't you? I know every time I see photos of clems I don't have, my addiction seems to become worse.
