Yehudith, I'm with you... I could chase those little furry meanies all across the neighborhood. Went out to find the purple crocuses which were going to bloom yesterday, nipped down to the stamens. So disappointing. :(
Yardening 7, March 2014
Oh no! That's the worst :( I just about swore off tulips for that reason. I did plant some last fall though so we'll see how they fare.
Oh it all sounds so wonderful, out working in the Gardens. I have other things to take care of and I can't "push" my back before we leave on our trip. So I keep walking past the messy beds and thinking later. God I wonder how bad they will look when I get home. I am thinking that I may need to get some paid help. I have a really nice out of work neighbor, I wonder if she likes to garden?
Holly don't mention backs! Good L-rd! I pound and pound on all my students to protect their backs at all costs. It sounds awful but I'd rather have them just plain drop a patient rather than straining their backs to keep them off the floor. I know I know, but those who have whole backs will never appreciate the sentiment. Mine came from a patient beating me up and breaking it when I was still a student. I've seen many more come from lifting patients wrong and trying to keep someone from falling. No Holly, guard your back!!!
Holly, if she doesn't now, she will when you are through with her.. Good idea to help her out, too.
I always tried to lift with my legs when I was a nurse aide in a home. When I was training my replacement after the summer, that was what I stressed. Be smart, lift with your legs. Leverage.
Beautiful sunshine today!!!!!
it is such a beautiful morning
Who knew Hugh Jackman had such a musical career?

I got my aspergras bed cleaned the other pretty Saturday. Still need to do a lot to get the garden ready, including adding a layer of old straw and chicken manure, and turn it in. I'll move the 'maters again this year and hope to start my espalier of Asian pears.
I am afraid it is too late for me. After years and years of working hard and playing hard I have been diagnosed with spondylosis, which is pressing on my sciatic nerve . It is going to be a huge adjustment for me and I am not sure just yet what I will be able to do, how long or well the epidural steroid shots will work and when or if I will take the leap to the dreaded back surgery that Ric just had in Nov. Six weeks ago I could walk or stand for only a few minutes and I couldn't sit up straight for 30 seconds. I am doing so much better now but the more I walk the more I hurt, stairs are more painful and carrying anything more then 10/15 lbs is impossible. But I am good enough right now to get thru the airport and handle the plane ride. So I am not going to do anything that will change that Bahamas here I come.
Look out, Bahamas, here she comes!!!!! Enjoy your trip. There will be time to figure out your plan of action once you get back. Gentle hugs being sent. Glad to have a diagnosis.
Here is an idea I saw on Pinterest for anyone who is planting strawberries. Paint stones to look like strawberries, put them in your strawberry patch before the berries ripen, and the birds will leave your berries alone - wonder if it really works?

the voles in one of my beds are INSANE, the one back at the corner I cleaned up there, just a thin layer of pine needles and some blown leaves. Vole holes! They ate some Siberian iris, have never known them to eat that. I think they also ate all the Neomarica walking iris patch that was so full last year, from apsenhill. Voles are clearly in charge of what lives here.
Sally, are you *sure* you don't want a good hunting cat for your yard?? :-)
Sally, it looks like we need a new thread for April!
Ah Seq, I have no idea. They sell them at a nursery down here but I've never seen one planted.
SSG, that would be great. We could make a day of it and go on that field trip to The Perennial Farm when they open for the season. I know some of us were talking about that last fall.
Oh, yes, a field trip to Perennial Farm! Count me in! :-)
I'll take pictures of those mysterious seedlings. And put me down for a shooting star, speedie!
What do you all plant on the base of roses? I have red knockouts that bloom very nicely but they're in part shade so they get pretty leggy. Any recommendations for part-shade ground covers that play nicely with roses? I tried salvias, but it's too shady for them.
Geranium? Ajuga?
My dianthus have done well under my rose bushes, SSG. Also New Guinea impatiens.

I saw my first aphid of the season yesterday. AARRRGGGHHH
It seems too early for aphids! I don't have any lacewings, ladybugs, or preying mantis yet. :(
SSG, I'm in awe that your spring is far enough along to have an aphid!! I feel lucky to have the reticulated iris unfurling...
My abelia looks pretty tired out. I'm hoping it perks up with the spring weather and starts putting out new leaves.
I don't have grass, just mowed weeds. LOL
LOL Holly, I fear that is me, too! :-)
if someone else wants to do a new Yardening thread, that would be great!
I have to work in the AM, but if it's still waiting for me tomorrow night I can do it.
ARGH squirrels

I'm so tickled. The boxes have started coming. So far I've gotten my lilies from B&D. I've got Elisive, Casabblanca, Blck eauty
Speciosum Uchida
Spec. Album
Holland Beauty
Amarossi
Scherheraade
Lesotho
Anastasia
Conca D'or
Levern Friemann
Prince Promise
All the ones I got last fall and potted up are out on the porch and have started sticking their noses up. They are super big and husky. Most of them multiplied over the winter in the garage and have up to four noses each. Yep I'm a happy camper alright.
Yehudith
That sounds fantastic!
I copied/pasted your post to new thread see my link above

Those squirrels--ergh! But the irises still look pretty anyway, SSG!
