Yardening 7, March 2014

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha...the monkey puzzle tree would have to be kept inside in the winter. The cactus is cold hardy. If memory serves correct, puzzle trees are zone 7 minimum?

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

The rows of white pines growing in our back yard when we bought our house in 1992 were Arbor Day seedlings that school kids brought home, according to one of our neighbors.

Sequoia, your sequoias are going to fill your yard decades from now - what then?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh I would love some strawberries! My strawberry pot has been empty for over a year!

Gita and Karen, I'm not usually in that area but I can make a trip of it at some point.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Ah Seq, I have no idea. They sell them at a nursery down here but I've never seen one planted.
SSG, that would be great. We could make a day of it and go on that field trip to The Perennial Farm when they open for the season. I know some of us were talking about that last fall.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--I will still dig them up. I can group them all into a 10"pot in soil.

Maybe someone else will want some too--there's enough for more than one person.

Just FYI---I work on Sundays. Saturdays are OK. G.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Yes of course, everyone is invited!

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Also it has to be a Saturday anyway because they are only open to the public on Saturdays. Otherwise it's wholesale only. And Saturday is my "day off" too. Church on Sunday.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh I definitely couldn't take all of them. Probably just a few starts? I'd love to take a field trip, and Saturdays are usually good for me as well.

MD/VA folks -- Meadow Farms is having a sale on hardwood mulch. It's 5 for $15 for 3 cubic feet bags, which works out to be $1 per cubic foot. This is a fantastic price, and for me, cheaper than getting a small quantity delivered.

Ssg, (sorry I'm late!).. if you've not yet made the purchase of your garden markers (and if you're still interested in opinions), the one I REALLY love is this one:

That one is my absolute favourite from that whole site.

LOL speedie, I'm going to need another month at least to make a decision. :) I don't deal well having too many choices!

I think those forks are hilarious!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

They really are cute and unusual, huh? I just love 'em!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Muddy: when the trees fill the yard, I'll learn to be a shade lover :) Plus the Giant Sequoia is 4' from the property line so it will also fill the neighbor's yard :) Have to spread the love you know.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

speedie--

There is a man I have seen in Craft shows who bends forks in all kinds of things..

I have a couple of them--they should be polished--as the forks he uses are
all silver plate. Bending them has to be a slow and steady job..
Wonder if he heats them first???

You could check in all the Thrift Stores and find the forks. Usually--25 cents each.

The ones I have are--2 business card holders---and, the funniest--a Pickle Picker.
Note the finger up??

Gita, I wonder if he bends them with his mind like in the Matrix...

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Hee hee sequoia - you are such a different generation - no offense Gita, but I doubt you know what the matrix is. I could be greatly mistaken, so slap me silly if you do LOL...

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

But the matrix isn't real he would have to use the force...

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Lol...nice Terp

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hm who was the guy who bent spoons. Remember him?

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Well if we're talking the Matrix, it was the little boy at the house of the Oracle. The boy taught Neo how to bend the spoon.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Haaa...haaa....You all trying to insult me???

I saw this man sitting there bending these forks with some kind of pliers..
You know how in craft shows--the artists just sit there and continue their craft.

Wasn't "the matrix" a movie? TV show?
Never saw it--BUT--we ALL have a huge "matrix" of nerves in out bodies...

Sally--I know who you are talking about--the magician who would bend nails
just bu rolling them around in his hands.....WHAT was his name???

I may be old--but my mind has stayed pretty "with it"--excluding movies and TV shows.
I have my favorites I watch--and YOU, Jeff, would probably never watch these...

Good come-back--Paul! ....:o) G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

The illusionist and magician who bent the spoons was Uri Geller.

He has been asked to locate flight 370.

What are the favorites you watch Gita? My wife and I like to watch cop shows...CSI and Blue Bloods are our favorite.

Hahah....nice Ric, that's about as good a hope as they have for sure...sadly enough..I can't believe all the technology we have and they still haven't found that thing yet.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita, go ahead and slap me silly - you DID know that the Matrix was a movie HA HA HA. To be honest, I saw you post your age recently, and may I say that I was extremely surprised. I associate your mind and physical abilities with someone much younger.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Terri--It is because of THAT--that i am not ashamed of telling people how old i am--...
Love the gaping mouth look and the--"REALLY????" You look like you're in your..(add a #)
AND--I still do not color my hair! There!!! That must be genetic....
Touching up gray hairs around my face does not count...only lasts 2 days.

*******************************************************************

Jeff--
-My favorite show of all is "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmern.
--And--I would never miss an episode of "Dancing With the Stars"..
--I like "Chopped" too (another food show)...but it gets old hat sometimes..
--LOVE "American Pickers" Mike is too cute!! I watch it when there is nothing else to watch.
--I like "Househunters"--but the selfishness and showing how spoiled we all are
here in the USA--when someone is looking for a house in Italy or any other Country--
and the woman just HAS TO HAVE a Granite countertop---and the bathroom
HAS TO BE completely re-done--hate the vanity...etc...etc...
--I like "Dead Files"--the shows with Amy--the one who sees and can talk to the ghosts
of the dead. This runs back-to-back over hours on Friday evenings/nights.
--AND--I love to watch any of the movies on "Hallmark". Such tear-jerker love stories...
I am always crying at the end... I'm a real "schmuck"....
--Love good nature Shows--Mysteries at the Museum (educational)--and the show where they show you how something is made....Love those! Name???

I never watch movies--too long to get tied up. Besides--I don't know how to find any...

OK! Is that enough for you to get a slight mirror on my life?
We will meet soon enough. Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh Gita, I started going gray when I was in college!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I did get out there for a little bit late this afternoon. I cut some broken branches in the big Juniper hedge and cleaned out the small bed at the side of the house. It is spot that seems to catch a lot of leaves and I always try to clean it up as soon as I can there are Helle, Hosta and daffs in that bed so I need to dig them out of the deep leaf pile.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ssg, I never saw a grey hair on your head!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, one of my earliest memories is of my parents dying their hair. Both went gray very early.

And I've continued this family tradition. I have been very gray for very long. :(

I have a yardening question! When do you all turn on your outdoor faucets? Is it too early to do so now?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have lots of grey, but like L'Oreal says "I'm worth it"

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't think any of you have seen me since I started coloring my hair again. I won't say much but it is a big change. LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS-

I turn on my faucets when, one day, I need the hose to water something,
need to fill up my watering can, the Bird baths, hose off my Patio, etc....

I don't think we will be getting deep freezes any more.
I will wait another week or so, though. G.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly---
You gonna be a redhead???? Pitch black? Bright blonde? Post a picture...

I have a hunk of my hair saved from a haircut when i was 12.
It is the same color as my hair now....at least the majority of it...

Sally--You are too funny--in a realistic way. You are always "worth it"...

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Quote from Sequoiadendron4 :
Well if we're talking the Matrix, it was the little boy at the house of the Oracle. The boy taught Neo how to bend the spoon.

There was no spoon!! < =P

Gita, those are some really cool forks!! I think we've got some 'dollar store' forks at work for our use, I'll snag one to bring home to practice on it. ;)

Not gotten any yardening here yet, and I'm with you Gita, not gonna turn on the outside hose bibs yet for another week or so -- just to be sure. I'm really anxious to clean up that Big Bed though, wanna see if anything has survived! Sure looks like there's been a lot of vole activity though - holes everywhere! =(

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie---

Just guessing here----
Cheap cutlery ($ store) may break when you bend it.

I think the real, old cutlery may be metal through and through.

As I said--this man used silver-plated forks--and he sat there polishing
each one. Silver-plate cutlery must have a bit of age to it. I paid $4 for each of them.
Is it still made???? Silver is so $$$ nowadays...like gold used to be.

That is why Thrift Shops are a better source.

I once bought a complete service of S.S.S. Oneida cutlery at a Goodwill.
Service for 8---for $8. They were all in a plastic bag.
Tsp's--Soup spoons--Knives--desert forks--dinner forks. Looked brand new.

As for the tool to bend them with--I would imagine using an Alligator-nose pliers
would work best...
Let us know how it works out....OK? G.

like that pinterest page.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Taking a small break. I just sifted a couple bushels of compost added lime and amended one of our beds. More to do, a lot of storm damage to clean up and burn, I've already started a bonfire. The compost is just dry enough to work with without clumping. I may try to turn a row or two in the garden to start peas and onions. I'm also adding onions around our awful roses.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I finished up that small bed I was working on yesterday and Ric brought me a really nice load of compost to add to it. Here is the finished result and a pic of the lovely brick driveway. So much nicer looking than the old stone drive.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Ric and Holly, that bed and brick are looking good.

I just came in for a lunch break. It is wonderful weather. My niece Brittney and 5 year old great niece Michaela came over to fish and are down at the pond. I'm not sure if they have been catching anything though.

I've been outside removing matted woodland leaves away from the hellebores and trimming them up. What a difference a few years make. The hellebores that I planted 4 or 5 years ago are thick clumps with lots of buds, as compared to the ones that I planted last year that are really small with no buds and no new leaves emerging yet. The only way I can tell where they are is from the 3-5 dead leaves from last season.

Will be heading back out in a few minutes to do more yardening and to soak up this sunshine.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I came in for a rest and to ice my back, I am doing pretty good and will def not over do it as I don't want anything interfering with the trip to the Bahamas. Just finishing up my salad and will be heading back out side to work on the next bed. Ric is getting me another load of compost as this bed will need to be heavily top dressed, too.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Plugging away here, I should soon have 5-6 bushels of compost ready and limed. I have almost all the limbs gathered by the fire and should get that done soon too. Then I'll move to the aspergras bed, weed and clean that off in prep. for Preen or corn gluten and fresh mulch. I'll water the GH and quit, maybe after filling the feeders.
