I abhor those blue orchids.... So hideous. :(
However, your bromeliad bench looks very pretty!
Weather Watching Feb 2014 - No More Snow?
Karen, me too - they look so unnatural. Some people must like them though since Gita says they always sell out. To quote a favorite saying that my BIL and I share "People don't know what".
Hey, I've never quite been able to figure out the meaning of your screen name typwc - any special significance? Earlier on a DG thread, we had the discussion about some of the harder ones to figure out. For example Pat's ecnalg is a clever one - backwards glance. Donnerville is for Sally's family home in England. We had a lot of fun with Devon's happy_macomb - there is a name game for what your adult film star name would be - combine the name of your first pet with the name of the first street you lived on LOL
Oh my name?... Well I don't usually like to say. But I guess I have to, as you are not the first to ask. You guys are certainly a curious bunch! I've used this handle since my first online presence began in high school with AOL's Instant Messenger. I asked my snarkiest friend what he thought my handle should be and he said "typical white chick". Of course I've always known that I wasn't typical but I embraced the name anyway. so there you go. it's kind of embarrassing to explain but I have stuck with it for 15 years now. I like that it's short and it's generally not taken. In my mind I read it as "typ-W-C" or "tip a whick" or just "Tip" but I hope you don't all think I'm typical now! :)
Who's going to be outside gardening this Saturday??? I know I will be. Geez 50 and sunny is what the weatherman is saying.
I think I'm going to rip out our young row of hollies in preparation for planting 12 aronia arbutifolia on the 15th. Then I think I might throw down some mulch on a few beds, we'll see how ambitious I get :)
No yard work for me yet--
I am still planning to go to the Timmonium Flower and Garden show this Saturday.
Which will also include the Orchid Show in another building.
Paul got 10 free tickets to be given away at the Swap--so I took two.
Aina may come along---I told her it will be like stepping into another World...
G.
Some shots from last years...
Please stop by the club's booth, American Rhododendron Society (Mason-Dixon), and say hi. Ask for Sonny or Ray and tell them I sent you if I'm not there. We will have Rhododendron seedlings at different stages and some evergreens on display. Unfortunately we were unable to force anything so you'll have to wait for blooms until the club's sale!
See you there! Maybe.
People don't know what...hahaha!!! That is for sure. Those blue orchids are hideous. I also hate the sparkley spray painted- blue?- poinsettias. But if they sell--- sigh, ya gotta make money.
Here's a handy weather forecasting tool for the week ahead. If Sally M is working it will be nice, if she has the day off it will be nasty. I'm working Saturday. And have a headcold anyway
Hunny Harwood.
HUNNY HARDWOOD?!?!?!!? Aaaahaahaahaahahahaaa!!!!!!!! I sure hope it's nice this weekend, I get to work this Saturday, wheeeee!!!! < =D
Typ, that is a REALLY cool name, and I love the story behind it!! It perfectly DOES NOT suit you! =)
5 cheers for Sequoia for ripping out hollies!!! (I'm not a holly fan, can you tell?).
Paul, thank you again for the introduction to Debbie, I look forward to (the new) Bossman and me getting to make the drive up there to meet her. He's all gung-ho about us making road trips to visit our vendors soon, wayyyy cool!
Typwc, that is funny - I don't think I could have guessed that handle in a million years :)
Poor Hunny Harwood, maybe Sunday will be even nicer than Saturday and your head cold will be gone for you to enjoy it. Even the few warm days we've had, the snow cover here has been so deep that I couldn't do anything anyway. I doubt what is currently out there will be gone by Saturday but maybe Sunday will work out for me too.
That is a great background to your username, Typ! :-)
And Sally, my last name *is* Harwood--for real! :-D It gave me quite a start at first when I read 'Hunny Harwood'--LOL!
haha your long lost sister
LOL... Goldy Majestic, here, unless fish don't count and then it would be Bitsy Majestic (rather an oxymoron!)
Last snowman picture from 2013 was March 24 (found it when looking in photo files last night). Just sayin'.
Bitsy, hold your tongue!
Bitsy Majestic, torch singer!

Loved the background Typwc. We really are a curious bunch!! Hehehe
Thinking the snow is getting to us
Queenie Broad. Maybe we should form a band or something!!!,
I guess my stage name would be Spanky Franklinville.
But I think Queenie Broad wins the award for most likely to be a real adult film star name! :)
What's with the weird names, have I missed something?
I'm going to be happy to rip these things out because they've been nothing but trouble since I planted them. With spider mites, scale, and such...just a nuisance to stay on top of these things.
Hi Jeff,
I was wondering about Karen's typwc screen name, and said that we had a discussion thread a while back asking about the more difficult ones to figure out. One of them was Devon's happy_macomb. Turns out there is a name game for what your adult film star name would be - combine the name of your first pet with the name of the first street you lived on. Most of them really do come out pretty funny.
So, 'Happy' was the name of Devon's first pet, and 'Macomb' the name of the first street she lived on?
Yes Jeff, that is exactly correct!
That would make me Bugsy Muscatine. Sounds more like a 1930's Mafia hit man. < =D
Mine would be Winchester Abbington. It is one of the ones that doesn't really fit - sounds more like an aristocrat on Downton Abbey :)
Sounds like it suits you well, M'Lady! < =D
Not really - lately I've been wearing thin stretchy black pants to work, hoping no one realizes that they are sweat pants from Walmart LOL...
Interesting....I've always heard that your exotic film star name was your middle name and the street you grew up on. If that's the case my name would be Neil Berkeley.
If it's as you say, it's Kit Kat Berkeley...LOL not very flattering.
not flattering- but perfect for your new pet name on Mid ATLANTIC. as in
"Hey KitKat, how are those Aronia working out?"
Another fun pastime- take any fortune from a fortune cookie, read it, and add 'in bed' at the end...they can sound rather amusing
Hmmmm--I would have to think which WAS the first street I lived on...
I could choose the street our house was on in Latvia.
That would be---Frisky Prince
If I chose the street we lived on (sharing a house with my Aunt and Uncle)
after we came to the USA my name would be----Frisky Midland
1st street we lived on after i got married. Even if we just rented...
my name would be----Frisky Dartmouth
First street my Mom actually bought a house on--my name would be---
Frisky Roselawn.
Going with Jeff's formula--Middle name and where I grew up--
my name would be Aldona Prince
You choose!!!! I will, gracefully, accept the majority vote.
Gita
HAS to be Frisky Prince for our ahem 'movie cast'
I think Frisky Dartmouth and Winchester Abbington went to Prep School together
I'm with Aldona Prince....that sounds like the name for sure :)
Oh geez, I hope the Kit Kat name doesn't stick....new people will look at me weird for sure.
KK sounds too much like the other extra K name : / I'd rather be named after a delicious snack, which I can no longer eat because of my celiacs but was one of my favs when I could eat it.
What is that annual you have at the bottom of the picture? I had those in our gardens last year and they performed wonderfully but I didn't know the name. The birds would eat the seed heads, it was pretty cool.
Jeff--
if you mean in the picture above--they are pink, low-growing Zinnias...
Nothing special... I have some seeds....Did you think it was something else??
What was that favorite snack? I just looked up Celiac Disease so I would
know what you were talking about...AHHHH---Gluten....
No beer either--I would imagine....I feel for you!
Gita
Haha...I've given up drinking a few years ago but before that I was limited to distilled liquor and hard ciders..
I didn't know those were zinnias. I guess I didn't pay much attention to what they were when I was planting them. I sprinkled the mature seed heads about in the garden so maybe I'll have some volunteers. Either way though I'm going to make sure to get a bunch this year.
Hey Frisky, those Zinnias look great! I think I may have to try those some time soon. =)
Heeheee... sorry, KitKat is gonna HAVE to stick! (and stop trying to change the subject!)
< =P
How come no one posts their pictures under their names any more??????
I always want to see what people look like....
Under Dg "Extras" (hard to find--here's the link) http://davesgarden.com/extras.php#b
Copy this link into your tool bar. It is hard to get to otherwise.
There is a picture Album of people.
Of course--you have to upload one to be on there...
Check out all the other goodies on this site too.
The Addess Exchange--The long out-of-pring DG Cookbook, and much more.

Still dealing with a cold that began earlier this week, but hope to be slogging around in the remaining snow later today. Lots of branches to get rid of from our ice storm. Sorry you have to work today, Sally.

Just as I thought, still so much snow on the ground here today. I'll be working on indoor seed starting instead - tomatoes and annuals (five spot, violas, daturas)... I've got a lot of morning glory seeds too, but I think I may just direct sow those outside when danger of frost has passed. I looked it up for this area - May 1 - gosh, that seems so far away...
I plan on getting out in the front yard/garden and doing some cleaning up, want to get a good look at what bulbs are coming up. Hope what I planted last year survived. Will feel good to be outside anyway.
The only problem I've had with the 'name of first pet/name of street' game is that these are both often security questions for financial accounts! :-( This has always made me reluctant to participate. However, given that my family as a whole has had *many* pets over the years and lived on *many* different streets in *many* different localities, I'll offer this combo from somewhere loosely associated with my life:
Cocoa Crescent
;-)

OOOOOHHHH. I like that. Cocoa Crescent. That just flows off the tongue.
thanks, Jan--LOL!
Darned frozen soil!!! Grr...I tried to dig out some of the hollies we'll be replacing next weekend but some of them are in frozen soil so I decided to get some mulch and work on that a while. I'm just finishing up with lunch and back out there for a little while longer.
