Hmmm, can we bottle him? :)

Judy, really cool family outing pics!! (there's that word again!).

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

coleup, sea cave trip must have been interesting. never even heard of a "sea" cave before

and I so wish I didn't have to drive this am... it's snowing away here this morning. looks like we have an added inch or so. my guess is that it's rain down in Vineland where I have to go; at least I'm headed south! Our front yard is still like a foot deep and no snow to speak of in Vineland

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Wind, I hope it passes you as quickly as it's passed us. At about 4:30 or so the snow left a light scrim on everything, then was sneeting when DH left for work... now, the sky is completely clear and the moon is shining brightly.

("sneeting": Snowing/sleeting.) ;)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Found this weather related article today I thought might be of interest: http://www.wtop.com/884/3564927/Why-longer-winters-may-be-on-the-way .

Now that's just downright scary.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Coleup, Sure loooks like they had a great fun day.
Wind, Safe travels. We just got a small overnight dusting here.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Interesting article David, I notice the reference is now climate change not global warming, although the warming drives the change.
We got 2"s of powder last night, easily dispatched with the leaf blower before it warmed up this AM.

The term global warming isn't used as much now because some people don't think they should have cold days if global warming is happening. Weather and climate seem to be the same thing to some ;o).

Donner---

I just spent an hour looking at all the other links this link provoked...

Weird things--weird events--weird noised all over the world...etc...
LOVE this kind of stuff!!!

Addictive................G.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

greenthumb, I had just heard about the jet stream too this week. interesting info

well this morning I took a look at our foot of snow with the added 3 inches, and we had at least 15 inches in our front yard this am. It was up to my knees. I put on my boots and Harry helped me get the car brushed off and got me on my way. Vineland actually had some snow too.

And, would you believe I forgot a pair of shoes to change into!!! I had to have my clodhopper boots on all day. When I left Vineland the sun was out and all their snow was pretty much melted.

Needless to say when I finally got home, I couldn't wait to take my darn boots off!!!!!! I don't want to wear boots ever again lol

we had a lot of melting today in Mt. Laurel, but we do still have piles of snow everywhere. I'd say the entire 3 inches melted away today

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Ric, what a great idea to use a leaf blower on the type of snow we had today. I'll have to remember that!

This climate change discussion got me to thinking about the heat zone numbers I'm starting to see on plant tags. I had no idea what heat zone I'm in, so I looked it up: it's 7.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

55ºF here, sunny, snow all melted except on the most shaded north aspects - and the first Red-winged Blackbirds were on the back porch.

It's spring - write it down.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Significantly late to the party here but thought I could add to the interesting links.

Ice Caves:
Thousands of people are making their way to Leelanau County this winter to check out the beautiful ice caves that Mother Nature has created on the shores of Lake Michigan, just north of Leland.

Here's a small "cave" with me in it...not reaally an ice cave...

This was taken in AK at the very "tongue" (end of) the Exit Glacier---
the only glacier one can access by car--and along hike to get to this.

Here, is the end of this majestic Glacier where it's melt becomes a trickle--
and then a stream--and then a river which, eventually, ends up in the sea.

It is not a "cave" at all. it is a sort of "wash out" on the side of it as the Glacier melts.
The blue color of the ice is due to the huge compression the ice experiences.
I think it was awesome!! This was all taken in July, 2007.

1--Me at the "cave'
2--The worn our, dirty end of the Exit Glacier
3--My sister (who lives in AK) and our cousin's DH, from Latvia at the "tongue".
4--The trickles become streans--and the streams become small rivers...
and---the rivulets from many glaciers join to become a wide body of shallow water....
5--...which becomes a river and flows into the sea.

#4 and #5 were taken from a small airplane we rented to fly over the glaciers...
Talk about a humbling feeling.....looking down on all of this.

Thanks Terp,Those are the ones I was talking about but couldn't remember exactly where I saw them.
Gita, I would love to see a Glacier.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

The leaf blower does the job quickly if the snow is powdery and has not started to melt.
We hit the low 40s today the melt is on. It felt funny to stand out in the sunshine with just a tee shirt on.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who'll go outside without a coat when it's still in the 40's!

Unfortunately, I just heard another polar vortex is rolling in next week.

I have a "wovel" that's great for snow up to about 8". It took me a while to get the hang of it, but now I really like it. http://www.wovel.com/Home/

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

That wovel is neat looking, what makes it dump?
No coat, I was out in shorts and a sleeveless tee. LOL
Dropped to freezing last night slowing the melt, if that kept up may be it would do less damage.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I went out a while ago to fill up the bird feeder--again--and checked on some
of the WS containers I started last fall.
Nothing showing in them....:o( I supposed that one should not sow seeds in
November and expect them to sprout and survive this kind of a winter...
Just my ignorance---I do not really WS anything...
Need to do it NOW--right?

Having breakfast (at the computer--as always) and then will go out and
prune back my KO Rose. it is nice enough out there...
Too wet to do anything else.
G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita, I've done a lot of winter sowing and I don't think you have done anything wrong. You should not expect germination this soon, especially considering the cold weather this year. Seeds should sprout once the weather warms up in the early spring. Just relax and wait.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, David---

I did re-seed some of them. BTW--You have D-mail from me....
You WILL be very happy!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I got a kick out of this the other day. Even the snowmen are buried in snow.

Ric, about the Wovel: the snow flies off when you push down hard and quickly on the handles. It works best for me when I shovel so that I can make the snow fly straight off the front of the shovel. You can also tilt it sideways to fling the snow left or right, but I find that less effective. The big advantages are that you don't have to bend down to shovel, you don't have to lift the snow, and the shovel is wider than standard shovels.

That thing looks really cool Muddy, I'd love one for my Hubby AND for me! =)

We actually had a tornado rip through my area yesterday afternoon.. well, it was a few miles South of me when it started. There I was, sitting in class, when MY PHONE RANG!! Yipes, I'd forgotten to turn it off before class!!! < =0 Boy did I get "gently reminded" about that one... several times. Anyway, turns out it was DH in a panic 'cause he'd heard about the tornado and was rushing home. All was well, the path was south of us, but PHEWWW that was a close one!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

wow!
But given the tornado, I think getting a cell phone warning was an excusable violation...

going to work now--Our snow is virtually all melted off the grass..Anybody want to start a nw thread without the word Snow?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I wish a new thread "Without the Snow" but we are still well covered in it. What isn't covered in snow is a sloppy muddy mess. Alfie got stuck in the snow the other day he is use to it being hard and now that it is melting it is very soft he jumped up onto the snow and sunk into it. Ric said he had such a confused look on his face. He crawled out and went back to his established trails.
Speedie we had Tornado, watches in an area not far from us but I don't think there was one just the watch.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Okey dokey, new thread ready! You can find it here:

I heard something interesting yesterday while i was working outside...

It was coming from the trees across the street...It was a slightly screeching "CAWW"
For some reason--I thought it was a hawk. Don't know why??

Then I saw one fly off--and here's the weird part--coming from the opposite
direction was a group of ~ 12 or more of the same hawks...going somewhere????
Was the first one calling the others? Caww...Caww...

One thing I noticed--they had fairly short wings with rounded tips--not the long wing-span
you see when a hawk is drifting above searching for food.

Any idea what these were?

I worked today--so i was not home to bang on my window to scare the blackbirds away.
They emptied all 3 tubed half way. Pigs! That's about 4lbs of seed.
Tomorow they'll devour the other half-----I will be at work again.

I am going to bed! Nighty-Night! G.

Tomorrow night I will be glued to the TV watching the closing ceremony of the Olympics...
