Weather watching Jan 2014 Snow

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Mipii:

Yes.

typwc:

Watering the foliage is not the issue. Your picture shows this tree in lawn (which is a steady source of atmospheric moisture), which isn't the same as a tree surrounded by pavement (which is not). That's the point I was making. There is likely also the issue of free air movement on downtown sidewalks and retail parking lots, which may be better for avoiding foliar problems. I think the answer is location, location, location.

The organism that causes rust on hawthorns is pretty much ubiquitous and indigenous in the eastern US. So, whether your plant had some with it or not, it is going to be around. I'm pretty sure that it is one of those "needs two hosts in order to complete its lifecycle" problems, too - Cedar-Hawthorn Rust. Reading up on that will describe how it infects/affects plants, and what to do so that you best avoid or defeat it - should you choose to do battle.

I absolutely refuse to go toe-to-toe with you on "Who's Humidest?" I've lived my whole life here in HHH land - and that's not Hubert H. Humphrey. Hazy, Hot, and Humid have been topics of body art here. I've also been to Havre de Grace in July. I think I'd rather be here, and suck it up. 105ºF at the shoreline is not believable.

For those that don't know the story: Crataegus viridis 'Winter King' was discovered, selected, named, and introduced to cultivation in 1955 by the late Mr. Robert Simpson of Vincennes, IN (who also brought you Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' and a host of other fine garden plants). Native to the Ohio River valley region that Bob knew so well, 'Winter King' possessed superior landscape traits - larger persistent heavy crops of fruit and less susceptibility to cedar-hawthorn rust than the typically available hawthorn species in production.

Here are some champ 'Winter King' Hawthorn trees, doing what they were designed to do.

VV are they recent pics? you sure still have lots of ice. Great info and photos on Hawthorne

I'm planning for our next possibly serious round of snow. May have to work long hours today to accommodate those on my schedule for tomorrow. Where I work in south Jersey may even get rain, but some models are showing snow. We're most certain to get snow in Mt. Laurel. Last I heard it was somewhere around 6 to 8".

Good luck everyone with this coming storm. It seems to be reaching many states. We've stocked up our bird feeders and are keeping their heated water fresh. Even gave the squirrels some peanuts yesterday.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

You are quite welcome. My interest is in knowing as much about the challenges presented, rather than employing categorical exclusions in gardening. Plants can only do what they can do, and much of it is predictable.

The previous images are from central KY's January 2009 ice storm, which was a bit worse than the 0.4" ice we received last Wednesday/Thursday - which is still hanging on. I just haven't had a good opportunity to get out for pictures yet this time around.

Here are a few more I dredged up while combing old folders, from an early March 2012 snow event here. It appears much more joyous now, in retrospect...

Goodness VV, they are all spectacular shots, just gorgeous.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Snow's coming down steadily, but we only have 1/2 inch right now. How are the rest of you MAF'ers faring?

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

It started here about 7pm tonight... been snowing steadily ever since. We are in the pocket with an expected total of 12+ inches. Please say a small prayer for my DH... He must go to work tonight and will leave about 11:30pm. I doubt he will get back home tomorrow morning when he is due to get off. I am sure there will be no one to make it in to relieve him.

I am home and do not plan to leave this apt until Sat. when I have to go back to work. Making soup tomorrow (Chicken Tortilla) and potting up my own first hybrid seedling streptocarpus! I have about 60 seedlings so far... it will be exciting to see if I get any nice new hybrids!

Gita, I wanted to mention to you that I tried your recipe for Garlic Lime Chicken... it is delicious! You had accidentally posted it to the bird-watching thread, but if you hadn't, I wouldn't have seen it and tried it. I have more chicken breast and plan on making it Fri. For mine and my hubby's Valentine's Day lunch.

To all in the Mid-Atlantic, please be safe! As always, if you do not have to be out in it, don't!
Take care in this storm and blessings to all!
Karen

Wednesday, 11:30 PM EST - Have about 2 "

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

so far about 10-inches snow for us on top of what we already had still on the ground. winds are picking up too now with some transition to sleet. they are predicting power outages... will have to go dig out our candles for later and hope for the best. closed my office today since I'm snowed in and still have to dig out.

I was surprised to hear that Vineland NJ got over 6 inches so far. Usually they avoid much snowfall being further south.

be safe everyone!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Having some good times here with the snow. I'm not sure how much we've gotten; I haven't been outside yet. Going to have some breakfast and suit up to so the first clearing of the day.

It looks like we have about a foot of snow so far. Only 3" was expected. It's still snowing, and will be all day. "They" say we'll just get about 2" more, but I don't believe that for a moment. I can only tell where our road is by the mailboxes sticking up, maybe it will get plowed later today if we are lucky.

My sis didn't make it home from work last night as the snow was already pretty deep on the unplowed roads. She left a voice mail for me at 11PM when she got off the clock at work (which message I just got a few minutes ago), she was in the break room at Walmart but didn't say where she'd be sleeping. I'd guess she had lots of fellow workers who couldn't make it home as company.

I'm just glad we aren't getting the ice that those closer to the coast are getting. And I'm glad we still have electricity so I have heat, lights and the internet.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Wow, you guys have a lot!. It is a huge system on the radar. No wonder there was so much chatter on the news.
Mark said we had eight inches, we have a bit more I think. it is very wet slushy stuff. It's going to be a heavy job to clear.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

8 inches before change to sleet. High winds, gusts to 40 MPH. Waves off Ocean City 15 feet and coastal storm just cranking up.
Heavy wet snow and wind = power outages. Out of state crews already here in anticipation.

No idea of 'road conditions' for afternoon newspaper delivery. All of our vehicles moved up hill to large parking area that is always among the first plowed and treated. We believe we can use 4 wheel drive to pick up our papers when and if they arrive at the plant. How many will be deliverable is anyones guess as communities are last to be cleared.

Karen holding you and DH in thoughts and prayers as well as all others in harm's way.

Dianna we missed that rain/snow line this time, too. You and Harry stay safe.

Sequoia, 'first clearing' have fun and to all, don't over do!

Here, roads that have been 'cleared' and treated are now ICY. In areas where snow is regular feature of winter, roads are snow packed and sand is spread otherwise they would be nothing but ice with fresh snow over.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Darius, what you describe as only being able to tell where the road is by the mailboxes stisking up is just what the news paper demands we deliver in! They give us special bright orange plastic bags to use so customers can see their papers. HAHA as papers just sink beneathe the snow or are covered over with more snow and some aren't 'seen' until they totally jam up a snow blower or two.

I'm glad your sis didn't attempt drive home and is safe and that she let you know of her whereabouts.

Please use some of your internet time to post on some of our threads here or start one of your own, we value your wise wisdom and your yummy recipies!!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sally, our snow is light and fluffy, thankfully not slushy. I guess we are a bit colder than your area so no slush. I have no intentions of clearing our driveway but might do the sidewalk when this eventually quits. I don't think my sis knows how to use a snow shovel (LOL) and sometimes I get so annoyed with her that I refuse to do it myself. (She's 9 years younger and more able, just doesn't care.)

I haven't seen this much snow but once since the huge storm that left 3 feet of snow on my road, house and driveway on the Severn many years ago. (Of course, not just on my house, snowfall was just as bad in Bowie and elsewhere.) I DID have to shovel out that driveway plus all the additional snow my neighbor threw on my side and on my car when he cleared his driveway. Must have been around 1979-1980, before I moved to the mountains the first time.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Bless the hearts of the two Guys that live behind me.
They both have snow-blowers and are clearing off the sidewalks and driveway fronts
of everyone's houses on my side of the street right now.
They have done this before---

I am hunkered in today. Not going anywhere. Still gonna make my big pot of Chili.
Not sure if my HD is still holding the Chili Cook-off tomorrow...I will call..

If not--I know where some of the Chili will end up--to both of these Guys clearing
our sidewalks and driveways...IF I can walk to their house through all the snow
in my back yard. Someone on radio that lives in this area said we got 17".
I KNOW it is at least a foot.

Road got plowed sometimes in the early AM. I heard the trucks going by--
more than one. Sometimes they drive in caravans.

It must be warming a bit--as the snow on the roof is melting and dripping down
outside my front door...

Wonder if the Seed swap is still on?????????? Gita

...AWWW--just looked out-one of them plowed my walkway right up to my door...
and he was also helping my neighbor dig out two of her cars...
This one man is a real macho Guy--I think he is having fun...

1--looking across the street
2--the Guy helping my neighbor dig out...she has to go to work, I think..

It seems funny that you saw more snow on the banks of the Severn than you've seen in the mountains!

1983 we had a couple feet right around Valentine's Day, too. When I could leave the house, I took BW Parkway south to visit a friend. You'd be driving along with both lanes clear, then suddenly the plows would have goofed and one lane closed up suddenly! It was a good lesson for an early driver.

I think it's ridiculous to expect newspapers or mail today. Neither one would much enrich my life today. I suppose some people feel differently- they are snowbound and will appreciate any touch of humanity. If they will pay the workers to make the effort, so be it and I hope they are all safe.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita- give a guy a power tool….I'm so glad to hear you have help.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Just stuck my head out the door and took this one...

It feels pretty balmy out there! You can see thatt the snow is soughing off my car--
and the cleared off sidewalk and street is melting....

HA! This is what will turn to ice later on!!!

OK! better get my Chili started! G.

It looks like we got about a foot of snow. And we're expecting another 2 inches tonight.

All the baby trees and shrubs in my garden are looking awfully sad under this heavy snow.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

We got about the same as Wind before it changed over to rainy mess. Plow just came by, YAY!!! Will be interesting to see how much we get on the back side of this storm.

Please stay safe everyone!!!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Gita, what a kindly thing for your neighbor guys to do! Make them some brownies or something in addition to the chili.

I had thought to finally do some baking today since I have the main house kitchen (where the oven is) all to myself, but as sure as I do, I'd lose power with bread or something in the oven. I have a few stovetop things I can make other than supper, one being Flan which I love.

I have a bunch of frozen key limes and might attempt a pie later if I have all the ingredients on hand including those for making a pie shell (I haven't made one in 2-3 years) but I'd prefer to be more adventurous since I have full access to the kitchen today. Beats my 2 burner hotplate any time. I might risk making biscotti because a power outage wouldn't be disastrous since they are "twice-baked".

If we lose power, I can cook and make coffee on my wood stove but it's terrible for baking.

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

It looks as though we actually got what was predicted for us; somewhere between 3-5 inches. I've not ventured out yet so no idea how cold it is out there, but I see plenty of dripping from the eves. (eaves?) Miracle of all miracles, a plow truck actually came by early this morning; our street is clear wet bare black pavement! This is probably only the 5th time in nearly 20 years that we've actually had a plow truck hit our road, they usually can't make it either up the hill one way, or down the hill the other way. ;) Now, if we could just miss the back end of the storm we'll be stylin'! =)

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm glad to hear everyone's safe.

Darius, I hope Walmart let everyone use its blankets and pillows and what ever else they could find to get a good night's sleep...and, of course, let them help themselves to dinner. I'd have been finding a corkscrew and a bottle of wine : )

We got 14". It's raining now, but last I heard we'll get more snow later. Our court and nearest road haven't been plowed, so we're trapped.

Ssgardener, thanks for reminding me about the shrubs. Knocking snow off mine will be my next task.

On my way back from putting seed out this morning, I found my garden pond - stepped right into it ! I wasn't hurt, so I had to laugh. I had forgotten all about it !

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Somehow there is little to no snow laying on our woody plants. The air has been warm enough, and its been wet enough, to melt or fall off.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

That's funny about finding the pond, Muddy! I lived in MD many years and knew lots of the surrounding areas but had to look up Vienna on a map today.

My sis got a motel room in town just down from Walmart, and will be there again tonight. Hopefully she'll get home tomorrow night after work (10PM) if our road has been cleared. Walmart DID provide a Thanksgiving dinner for employees who had to work that day, but they seldom do more. No one gets a full week of hours because then WM would have to provide benefits.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hopefully she'll get home tomorrow night after work

hopefully, to whom?--- ; ^)

So, it seems done here with 8-9 inches of wet snow. It clears to pavement easily but our court will get plowed much later. Thankfully there is a surfeit of males in this house, so we helped another neighbor. Another has snow blower, another pays a service and waved us off.

I feel sure we can travel well by Saturday. Gita, I will keep you posted but I think our end will be OK for you to come Saturday.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Hubby made it back home at 11:30 this morning... usually gets in at 8:30... but home safe now. He says the roads are a mess here. I went out and measured and we have about 10 inches. Someone earlier mentioned a covered area for the birds... probably on the birds thread... We have a 40% shade cloth over most of our balcony! and when it snows! that "covers" the table and over half the floor on the balcony. It does help... the little birds are happy not to have to dig through snow for food. The cats are not impressed by the white stuff on the balcony, and sit in the open door watching me work! LOL!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Snow accumulation here is in the double digits, but drifting has been so extensive that I don't know how one would make an accurate measurement. Even though we live on an unessential rural road, it has been plowed regularly since yesterday evening. Bare, wet pavement.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Sally, you must know by now that I don't particularly like this younger half-sister (I have another one too, completely unrelated to this one) but it's hard to divorce family members no matter what because we are still blood-related. I do care about her well-being, just as much as I care about the well-being of my friends, but frankly I like my friends better.

I have said many times that I could kill her but then I'd have to eat institutional foods for the rest of my life, LOL.

VA_Wild_Rose, I quit feeding the birds when my old cat was a hunter, and I don't fill the many feeders now even though my remaining cat seldom goes outdoors. I should start filling them again although I grow lots of various berries for the birds to eat over the winter.

Good weather for sorting picture files on computer, especially seeing these treats.

Alfie just loves the snow. Besides the paths that we shovel he has plowed his way around the yard. Wish I had a pic of him plowing thru the snow.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Sally. That really cheered me up :o).

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

That Alfie, the picture of "pluck". Addy loves the snow too, but I don't know if she'd bother plowing thru it if it was as tall as she is!

donner, I love that area, not that it is really so beautiful but partly for sentimental reasons. It is in the Patapsco park, and the river there is wide and about ankle to knee deep. There's a black blob in there that is Addy. She loves wading in the river too.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

That's a lovely peaceful scene, Sally. How I'd like to be wading in it with Addy right now!

Holly, Alfie looks like he's having so much fun! It's nice that someone enjoys it (he's an honorary person). We don't have a dog, but I noticed that our neighbor's Newfoundland was having a ball in it.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

My sister's dog (partially mine because I give him treats) loves the snow, not so much this time though.

I vaguely remember green stuff growing, LOL.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

It is supposed to be in the mid-upper 50's by the end of next week - hard to believe - but more believable than the first weather graph that popped up when I did my google search: that one said 72 degrees!

Had another inch or two tonight....

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally, what a gorgeous and hopeful photo!! I saw the black Addie blob and at first wondered what it was, Ha! =)

Oh man, Alfie is just soooo darned cute!!! Look, he's smiling!! =) Would be a heck of a lot easier to lose him in the snow than it would be for Addie! ;) heeheeheee

Darius, we know how that saying goes, 'You can pick your friends, but ya can't pick your family'! < =/ I'm just glad she is safe and sound.

We got another couple o' few inches last night as well. Started with sleet & freezing rain about 5:00 or so, then in about 1/2 hour it changed over to snow. Thankfully it's relatively warm though 'cause I see loads of tire tracks on the road; people must not be having too hard a time with it.

All school campuses are closed today, no class for me. =(

It was really coming down, and laying, last night. Kind of...pretty...

Took this photo out my front door.....magical! G.
