"Think Spring!" seed swap DISCUSSION

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally, I think I want half your list again -- how do you manage that?

Spinning top gourds -- enough for 1 or 2 hills for Joyanna (of course)
Corydalis cheilanthifolia- - or I'll wait for a seedling sometime if you have only a few seeds
German Johnson tomato (my FIL's favorite, must start a few for him too!)
Impatiens balsmina, Balsam," Blackberry"

Thanks!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

You got it! Copying/pasting your requests now...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

WOW!!!
So many posts to catch up on----whomever wanted gallon milk (cider) jugs--I have
quite a lot....Maybe....10 or 12?
Please remind me here--who wanted them...and if you want me to bring them.

greenthumb---
Your pictures are beautiful! The blooms in the second picture look so much like
the S. African Foxglove. The white one is stunning...wish I had space for one each.....

Yes--Cat--the above are already in a baggie for you. everyone should grow these ONCE!

Check out my Trade List--see if you want any other seeds...
I strongly suggest the "Lady-in-Red" Salvia. What a nice bloomer--well into late fall.
Google it--I don't have any decent pictures...

G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Sally!

Gita, does Lady in Red self-sow for you? If so, I'd love some of your "older" seeds of it for direct sowing, please! Seems like it would do well near columbines, getting going in summer just when they start fading.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Gita. I'd like to try some of your Lady in Red Salvia as well!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/31636/
Plantfiles for Lady in Red. Salvia coccineas are great, I have seeds for Forest Fire, similar to LIR, and had Coral Nymph. Both self sowed well for several years, especially Coral Nymph. THey sprouted kind of late , so would do well around early bloomers that go dormant in the heat.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita that was me!

I'd love some gallon jugs!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita I will take some of both the Datura and Broken Colors as well. I haven't been making swaps I will just pick thru the seed packets as I can but Ric and I are planning on coming. Between my working and 4 days of no power I just can't keep up.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

And that brings up a good point, especially for newcomers to this swap... I'd say the majority of seed swapping/sharing takes place on the spot, as people make the rounds with their seed boxes or do a give & take of extras at the Hodge Podge Table (formerly known as "free to good home"). So even if nobody has requested something you have on this thread, bring a few packets anyway -- they'll find homes!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

I've got a few extra 'store bought' seed packets that I will be putting into the mail today along with the "promised" seeds (some goodies for the Hodge Podge Table)... don't remember for sure what they are, but seems to me there's some Violas of some sort in there, and some "black" petunias as well. If I think of it and remember, I'll come back here and edit this post to add exactly what they are... need to head downstairs and put those seed packets together with their "info insert" to get them out in the mail today, Wheee!! =) Ss, be on the lookout for a medium-sized envelop from me, with =)'s all over it!

Editing 'cause I actually remembered to mention what 'store-bought' packets I will also be offering:

2 pk - Cosmos "Pink With Crimson Zone" (I dunno, that's what it says on the packets!)

2 pk - Pansy "Petticoat Pansy"

1 pk - Cosmos "Sea Shells"

1 pk - Baby Romaine.... someone (Ss!?!?) wanted Leafy lettuce.. can this be for you!? < =D

It was mentioned earlier on this thread that people were looking for a discussion thread for the Spring Plant swap. Just use the main thread for all general discussion:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1347015/

I'll start a continuation thread if it gets too long.

Thanks Aspen! :-)

Jill--

The L-I-R originally came from "wind"...I have asked for some the last 2 years..
Maybe she can answer your Q. about self-seeding..

I have only been growing the L-I-R for 2 years. So--none of the seeds are "older"...
Can't say if they self-seed or not...they are always mixed into beds with other plants.
I don't even know what the seedlings would look like...
They did very well last summer. Bloomed through November. Had to pull them
out still in bloom... The seeds are good-sized and pretty tight in their
spent "thingies"...I had to pick them all out by hand.
I will put 2 into your "bag"...
*************************************************

Cat--same for you--I will add 2 L-I-R seed packet to your "Bag"..
*************************************************
Holly--will put the Daturas and the 4's Broken Colors in YOUR baggie..
Will throw in 1 baggie of the "Limelight 4's as well. Chartreuse leaves--
grows low-mounding--bright magenta blooms...nice in a mixed bed...
**************************************************
SS--I will tie together 6 gallon jugs for you. Will that be enough or do you want more??
I buy Apple Cider in these--NOT milk..

Gita

Holly--for you--"Limelight 4 'clocks...Seeds may be 3 years old..but 4's have longevity.

Gita, could you throw some LIR in my bag too? and some Echinacea and Rudbeckea and 4 oclocks? Thanks

I'll take what ever gal jugs SSG doesn't want as Wayne did an unexpected recycle effort two weeks ago.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Coleup I have you down for the 'Indian Summer' Rudbeckias. Sorry I didn't respond earlier.

Greenthumb Can I try a bit of your Dracocephalum argunense 'Fiji Blue'? Looks beautiful and I have just the place for a drought-tolerant plant like that. Thanks!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Ss, the package is now in the tender care of the USPS. Be on the lookout for a medium sized brown "bubble" envelope with a couple =)'s on it, and a rainbow return-address label.
< =D

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Speedie, I have a pile going by the front door!

Somewhere in, MD(Zone 7b)

Wheee, thank you!! < =D

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Typwc, got you covered for the Dracocephalum.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

What?? Recycling clear-out just as winter sowing season gets going? Even Jim knows better... LOL

Joyanna helped me de-chaff some 'Blue Spice' basil this evening. We put just a pinch of seed in each pack, but they are really small, maybe half the size of other basil seeds. I've also got some mixed "Hot & Spicy" and 'Thai Siam Queen' basils, if you like randomness. Then we discovered that we still had most of a huge packet of 'Sugar Snap' peas from 2 years ago, so we split off half a dozen packs of 40-50 seeds (enough for a 10' row). We also saved seeds from a really delicious Chinese melon -- thin skin, very sweet yellow flesh, and of course we saved seeds from our beautiful 20 pound Halloween pumpkin. So... I guess I need to update my list! :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup--
I will put all you asked for in your "baggie"...
Q:--the 4's--do you want the "Broken Colors"--or the "Limelight"?? Both????

Re the bag of Fine Pines--I have not yet been to the Nursery. They are, pretty much,
closed....Bessides--every bag of everything is frozen solid. Can it wait till spring?
If you REALLY need to have these--I think I have an unopened bag out back.
Also frozen--but I could manage to get it in the car...Sallys???? Not sure..
LMK--OK?
I don't think I will give you any of my gal. jugs just to recycle...I have recycle p/u here
every other week year round if I wanted to do that. I was saving them, mostly,
in case mt back yard neighbor needed them to hang all around his pool as weights
to keep the liner taut.
**************************************

Karen--
will you please put aside some of your Hirta seeds for cat as well?
She asked me for mine--but I think mine may not be viable.
Could I have a few from you too? Or--preferably--any volunteers that have
come up in your garden. Always a better shot at success....
Are you still driving down by yourself?
Would you like to join me and Sally for a carpool? I could pick you up.

BTW--I have a good supply of ALL the basil varieties as well.

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I don't think anybody was asking for jugs for recycling... Coleup was lamenting that those she'd been saving had recently been cleared away by Wayne, and I said even Jim knows better than to recycle gallon jugs when it's time for winter sowing!

Who was needing pine fines? I might be able to spare 1 bag... assuming it's not frozen to the patio...

Gita, I'm glad you're saving the basil seeds, as my efforts have been pretty hit & miss lately!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--

OH! I misunderstood about the Jugs....;o( Silly me!

I promised Coleup a bag of the Fine Pines I can get here at
Chapel Hill Nursery for $5. I haven't stopped there to ask--but i KNOW
they are all frozen and I would hate to ask the guy to ride in his tractor
to bring me a couple bags from the far end of their field where they keep them.
They do not really sell these--so they are not kept up front--as they use them
for planting their trees and shrubs--
For people they know--like me--(I face painted for him for 17 years),,,they will go
and get me the bags.

I KNOW I can get them when the weather changes....CAN YOU WAIT, JUDY????
G.

edited....have you noticed how many people are talking about bringing
cuttings and plants to the Swap? Maybe they don't know your policy re plants....?

Gita, I will have hirta for you and Cat. :) I will have to see what kind of volunteers I get, but you get first dibs. I am driving myself, thanks for the offer. I will have to duck out early because we have other plans that evening too.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita of course pine fines can wait!...you, too Jill. I did use the bag I got and I like the texture. Thanks. O, the 4 oclocks can be both.

Jill, yes to the Sugar Snaps and the melon

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I hadn't noticed anybody mentioning bringing plants to the seed swap this Saturday, although several people mentioned that in addition to having seeds of something they might have a piece of it or volunteer seedlings to share at the spring swap -- by which I figure they mean the spring plant swap.

With regard to bringing plants... it's not a question of "my" policy, it's that we have to remember we're meeting in a restaurant, and everything we bring in gets carried right through the buffet area... a potted plant for the gift table or bagged cuttings would be fine, but we can't be bringing lots of plants and soil or potting mix through the middle of a restaurant. I don't think there's any confusion on this; if there's been a lot of talk of swapping plants next Sat. I guess I've missed it.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Maybe I am confusing the seed Swap--with people already posting
haves and wants for the upcoming Spring swap. I read all the watched posts and
maybe don't pay attention to the Thread topics...
Seems they are all lumped on the Discussion Thread. It all seems so early to do that...

Sorry if I am wrong....G.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, it is not just you getting confused. I am, too.

I think some of us were confused about where we should post the discussion for the spring PLANT swap and, since we were talking about planting for pollinators on the SEED swap discussion, we began discussing PLANT swap on the same thread. I believe the posts in which we say, "Where should we be discussing the plant swap?" still exist on the seed swap thread.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks typwc.
I think we were just digressing as " is our wont", (or usual habit)!
; ^)

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

I do it too. In fact, I believe I was one of the offenders talking about plant swaps in the seed swap thread. :)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

I just started a Spring Plant Swap Haves and Wants Discussion thread here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1350210/

and have asked DG Admin to stickie our three Spring Plant Swap threads at the top of our forum so they don't get lost

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Would a new seed swap discussion thread help? I know we're over 200 posts, so if anybody is having trouble loading the thread, LMK. Since we're in the final 48 hours, I thought we could stick with this thread, but I'm open to suggestions otherwise!

I hope everybody is keeping safe at home today! I'm not trying to derail our thread into a weather discussion, but I did want to touch base about it as I'm sure we're all wondering about Saturday. Sally reports 8 inches and still falling this morning. I think we're closer to 18, here. They'll have a chance Friday to get the roads totally clear, and then it's just a "chance of snow showers" late Friday night 'til noon Saturday... not enough to make travel a problem, at least not locally, and shouldn't be anything at all fo the return trip. Of course, that's all subject to change!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, could you please add to that request that the organization thread for the seed swap be stickied also (above the plant swap threads) please? It can be dropped off the stickies after the party, but I want the info to be more visible than the plant swap for now in case we get any late-comers. Thanks!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here's the SCOOP!

I wanted all of you to know how I resolved the seed issue --between the older
seeds in my "BOX" and last years seeds.

Whatever envelope in (my box) that had the same seeds in it that I picked
last summer--I took the slightly older seeds out and put the new ones in their place.

For the seeds that I did not have NEW replacements--they stayed in the envelopes
they were in.
SO--about 50% of the seeds in mt "BOX" will be from 2013--and the others will be
2-3 years old.

Still will be just ONE box. ....:o)

PS--I am bringing 3 items for the gift table--plus one for a VERY special young lady...
so if some of you did not have anything to bring--PLEASE do not worry!
There are always extras anyway.

*****
Swap CANCELLED due to stupid groundhog and his stupid shadow
We will reschedule, probably for Saturday March 1. Details will follow on a new swap threads.
*****

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

OOPS! Got confused with too many tabs open.

Thanks Jill! I found a packet of Aleppo from 2009 (? I think). I don't know how I ended up with them!

I just sowed them, but feeling skeptical that they're still viable.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

2009 should be fine. Pepper seeds are generally said to be viable for at least 5 years, but I don't think this would be their last "good" year... I've had them be fine after more like 10 years; germination % just drops a bit. Bottom heat will speed germination.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--

Has there been a final decision made on the day/time of the seed swap?
Will it be Sat, evening then????

I really need to know.....because of work. Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, I think the evening of Saturday March 1 looks like our best bet. Probably 4 to 8, and I'll check with Donna to see if I'll be able to get in the room by 3:30-ish to set up.

I'm thinking I'll ask Jim to take me there tomorrow for a shrimp fest. And I'm planning to swing by DPF, too, so I'll see bout getting that same discount on the 1st.
