"Think Spring!" seed swap DISCUSSION

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, I don't have a cedar glade either... but that's the naturally occurring habitat for Tennessee Coneflower, not where it'll grow in a garden situation. Missouri Botanical Garden site says "Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade." Other accounts praise its toughness & adaptability, able to handle hot/dry or cool/wet conditions. 'Rocky Top' hybrids are in North Creek's catalog but not on their availability list for this season.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I've seen pictures of those double, upward facing echinacea, but they seem so odd to me.

Here's the All American Selections review of Cheyenne Spirit:

"The AAS judges and their trial garden visitors raved about the attractiveness of the flowers and the range of colors while appreciating its sturdiness and low water needs. Even during wind and rain, this compact plant does not topple over like many echinacea. The variety of intense, bright colors adds sparkle to the garden from mid-summer through fall. As an added bonus, this maintenance-free echinacea doesn’t even need deadheading to provide summer long beauty."

The AAS Winners website is a fun one. http://www.all-americaselections.org/winners/index.cfm

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

The Cheyenne Spirit looks beautiful! I'll take one pack of 15 seeds. :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK... I'd like a volunteer please to take charge of that pack of Echinacea 'Cheyenne Spirit'... If you write/print up labels ahead of time (I have those 1x2 seed baggies from WalMart, so a slip of paper works fine, just put people names, # seeds, and cost on it), it should be pretty quick to split the pack up, especially if you're one of the caladium-sorting volunteers. The "in charge" person can pay me for the pack and then get reimbursed.

Thanks!

Greenthumb ordered me a smaller packet of the Tennessee echie... I'll be glad to split it with anybody else who wants to try starting them.. whoever is successful can share plants with the other!

In the interest of transparency, between us we ordered enough to get a discount, which I used to cover shipping and Joyanna's seeds (she & I like to pick out something special for her to share).

The first person to post a request -- and the common name for Berlandiera lyrata -- gets a packet of 12 seeds from Hazzard's. :-)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Ok lyre leafed sage and some tennessee echie please

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Speedie, thank you! Looking forward to this experiment!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

And my guess was without looking so Chocolate Daisy might do the trick!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I'd be happy to do it!

Echinacea 'Cheyenne Spirit'

50 to coleup
15 to catmint
15 to ssg
20 to happy

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes berlandieri chocolate daisy! :-)

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

And if I have achoice in small pkg of seeds from Hazzard Asclepias tuberosa 'Mellow Yellow" would be nice.

If more people want Cheyenne Spirit' seeds I can go to Zero as I have plants and seeds I saved from them to plant out along my paper route.

ssg is this okay with you to do more splits if there is more interest?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, SSG! $28.33 for 100 seeds. $4.25 for 15 (no shipping charge)

Coleup, you've got the Chocolate Daisy! I can do 6 more packs of 12 seeds for $1/pack. Hopefully they'll do really well for me and I'll have lots of seeds to offer in a couple of years!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, I placed the order last night and asked her to get it out asap so it would get here in time. I can email Joyce and see if she can add the A. tuberosa Mellow Yellow... 250 seeds for $10.95. LMK if you want it (and you can take charge of splitting it up if others are interested).

I did order A. currassavica 'Silky Deep Red', and I'll split that one ($1 for about 30 seeds).

I hope nobody minds that we're doing some "seeds for $" in the middle of a seed SWAP discussion... There will be plenty of seeds at the party for simply sharing, I promise!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Jill, what other 12 seeds for a dollar are you getting?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, we can split it in as many ways as there is interest!

I think Happy was looking for either a big chunk or none, so I just need to keep that in mind.

I still need to go through my seed drawer to see what I have available!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I think I'd like some Tennessee echie too. What is the lyre sage?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--

I would like to have, maybe, just 5 or 6 seeds of the Cheyenne Spirit.
I would like a couple of these in my garden.

Anyone willing to split 5 seeds off of your request?
I meant to check the seeds at HD and see if any of the companies have these.
May just find some.....

Thanks, Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I think that's doable, since coleup is willing to go down to zero seeds!

15 to catmint
15 to ssg
5 to Gita
?? (30?) to happy
?? to coleup

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, SS. remind me how much that costs....G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Salvia lyrata is Lyre leafed sage.
Berlanderia is the chocolate daisy.

I can give small plants --at plant swap--- of S lyrata in a maroon leafed cv, probably Burgundy Bliss. It is a low rosette of leaves with spikes of small light pink flowers. I find the flowers not very showy at all though. It will self sow.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll see how many seeds are in the Tennessee echie packet, but I only got a little pack, not the big one from Hazzard's (because although there was a lot of discussion, it didn't look like anybody else was actually interested).

Salvia lyrata... is this something else you wanted from Hazzard's?

IT MIGHT BE TOO LATE TO ADD TO THE ORDER FROM HAZZARD'S but if you tell me right away what you want, I will check with Joyce. I'm not going to ask her to "hold" my order, because I want to make sure it gets here. There's always next year... I order from Hazzard's at least every other year. :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, that's $1.45.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup you are so tempting me with all these varieties you are ordering! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, the 12 seeds for $1 is the same as your prize -- a split-pack of Chocolate Daisy. You need to let me know ASAP if you want to try to add other seeds to our order from Hazzards

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita you can definitely have 5 of my seeds! :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK!
Thanks--to whomever is giving up the 5 seeds.....Cat or coleup...

Cat--You HAVE TO grow this plant I will give you seeds for.
It is called "South African Foxglove"--"Digitalis Triloba" .
It is an annual--from seed to 6'!!!
It takes up a bit of space--but I gather you have room...
It grows tall and a bit straggly--but the blooms will blow you away--
and, they are magnets for bees.

I grew it in 2010 and took a lot of seeds....Sally even wrote an Article about it.
I will just toss some in your baggie.
The seeds are hard--so the wet-paper-towel-in-a-baggie might help.

Here's the link to Sally's Article http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2928/

Gita
1--new leaves are not lobed
2--this is tall!
3 &4--close-ups of flowers.

Quote from typwc :
Speedie, thank you! Looking forward to this experiment!

Not sure what I did but, you're very welcome! < =D

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Speedie, I was thanking you for the Veronica seeds in response to this post by you: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9762233

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Got my "Hot & Spicy" basil dechaffed (well, only a little chaff left), and Theresa just dropped off a packet of purple pole beans (fabulous edible ornamental), so I added a couple of things to my "haves" list -- although i still have to pack & label!

We're still getting over the crud, here, so maybe it'll be a low key weekend of playing with seeds. :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--
Talking about seeds....did you know your Aunt Felicia's Phlox makes seeds?
Not many--but if you let the heads go dry--you can see tiny, tiny little seed pods
at the end of some of the spent blooms. I collected 21 of them. They are good size...

Second question:
Does your "little one" read yet? I ask b/c i picked up a VERY fun activity book
for her (you know i always bring something...). it is for doodling and drawing--
with some samples on how to draw whatever--and then she does it. Very cute!
However--there is writing and easy directions to follow...you may have to do the reading...
I bet she likes to draw! Besides--the small book is PINK!!! Still have to get coloring pens..
Dollar store......

OK, Back to topic on hand--seeds!
I am DONE!!! DONE!!! Whew! This has been a hard haul--mentally--I think I have
reached a point of being totally overwhelmed with the amt. of seeds I have.
A small bit--up to a sandwich baggie almost full (Cleomies and 4 )'Clocks)....
Also both daturas...ooodles...

To complete my seed arranging--Went back to the most logical solution.................
Take out all the older seeds from the envelopes and put in the fresh ones..DAH!

So, Folks---I cannot possibly list all my seeds. Most of you already know what I have.
There are a few additions (new) that I already mentioned in my Haves. Will update.

For you "Never-Been-to--a-Seed Swap"--folks--please click on my name and go to my
Trade List. It has pictures & descriptions of everything I have. There's 51 entries.
There's only a couple of the seeds I no longer have that are listed.
My "BOX" I will bring--has 65 envelopes in it.
You know the craziest thing about having all these seeds??? 98% are All from my garden.

There is NO need to "reserve" any seeds from me--as there are very generous amts.
of seeds in all my baggies. If you do ask for anything--I will put it aside and drop it into
your baggie on the table. Yes! Jill has "goody Bags" for each of us every year.

I will link my "Trade List" under my "haves"...

I will also have a "Hodge Podge" envelope of this and that...so will Jill.
We just throw them all together and everyone can dig through there.

And, of course a couple gifts for the table...
Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, I sure appreciate your generosity -- as well as your organization! Joyanna is at the threshold of reading, but that book would be fun for us to do together. She has a good supply of little pens and markers. (She's "crafty," like you & me!)

"Hodge Podge" sounds like a better name than "Free to Good Home" (I really don't want a litter of kittens in that basket, ROFL). We'll devote a table to it... maybe I'll even get ambitious and set out different baskets (or flat boxes!) for annuals, perennials, and edibles! I've still got that fabulous box BlueSpiral gave us last year, too, and it's time to go through my tomato and pepper stash for all the seeds I know I just won't get to in the next couple of years.

If you're looking for anything in particular in tomatoes (type, color, size) or peppers (especially hot ones or paprika varieties), please let me know.

Also...

In your Have/Want post, please let us know your garden interests!
sun or shade, favorite colors, gardening for butterflies & hummers, tall or short or groundcover plants needed, flowers for cutting, flowers for scent, etc.

This will let people earmark seeds for you and drop them in your "goodie bag" at the swap. It'll let me look through my single packs of extra seeds and find something you might like. If you get something you just don't want -- Toss it onto the Hodge Podge table!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter: good idea about indicating general gardening interests in the have/want post! I already edited mine--I am gardening for the pollinators this season!! :-)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'll try to post some 'have's on Sunday.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

As a reminder (I know Sally knows this!), it's not necessary to post "haves," but it can help you in sorting out some seeds in advance and in knowing if you should make up 5 packets of marigold seed or a dozen.

The "goodie bags" are mostly mean to be used like gradeschool Valentine Mailboxes, a handy place to tuck seeds or other small items that are meant for particular people. It's also where I put things like a pencil & a Bingo card, or whatever you might need this year...

I'll be putting $5 off coupons for Dutch Plant Farm into your goodie bags, also. If you're planning on going there before the seed swap, Dmail me and give me your email address so I can forward the coupon to you. We lucked out, as these coupons are good until Feb. 28. I also want to remind you that I was able to arrange a DG discount for us again this year -- 15% off regularly priced hard goods (pruners, fertilizers, etc) and 20% off regularly priced plants. The $5 coupon can be used on regularly or sale priced items, no minimum purchase.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

nifty!

I have a couple things for the prize table.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks for all you do , Jill---That 15% off--I will see what i am low on
from the big bags of Espoma "Tones"...
Sending you a D-mail--Jill...Had a neat idea!!!

Sally--I will look for some nifty gifts as well..I have several..
AND-may I presume that i can ride up with you as before???

Thanks. Gita

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Of course you can Gita!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Coleup, do you need seeds ferried/ (fairied)?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Want to promote some seeds that I have to swap:

Asclepias perennis, White Milkweed

Penstemon "Lucketts". NOID Penstemon volunteer in yard. 18-24"

Penstemon tubaeflorus, White Wand Beardtongue
3 foot + tall, white-flowered.

Asclepias is needed for monarchs, these Penstemons are so lovely and require no real care once started that I would think they would be more widely planted.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Greenthumb. Can I have some of your Asclepias perennis?

Also, can I follow up with you about the mountain mints I heard you had? I would love to get some of this. Do you think you'll have some of these available as plants for the spring plant swap?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I would love to try your South African Foxglove, Ceratotheca triloba. Thanks so much!
