Use of ALT key commands

Maybe I missed a notification somewhere...

The ALT key commands allow use of symbols that don't exist on my keyboard. Is this still OK to do on DG?

I have commonly used the symbol for trademark (tm), which is ALT 0153. Now, when I use that, it shows up as some gibberish mixture of symbols.

Here's an example: Viburnum x Wishful Thinking�

It hasn't worked properly recently...

Where the trademark symbol should be, there is an a with a carat (sp?), a box, and a cent symbol. What's up with that?

Looks like you've got the same issue I do, Resin.

We are working on the recognized character set (I think that's the correct tech term for it) and should have it fixed shortly. In the meantime, I can only suggest avoiding any off-the-beaten-path characters, or you may wind up with some strange substitutes in their place.

Yes, that's about all you can do.

But I see the TM symbol when I preview the post. Strange.

That's what happens for me, too. It looks good in the preview, and then I get the bizarre characters when posted.

Yes, degrees (Alt0176) above is working now. Others may be as well.

Trademark should be ALT0153: ™

Registered should be ALT0174: ®

Can't remember copyright at the moment.

Anyone know what the codes for male ♂ and female ♀ symbols are? (had to copy and paste them in from wikipedia)

Don't think I've ever seen those codes in any of the ALT lists I've perused. I'd like the code for the appropriate hybrid symbol (not the small letter x).
