Looking good !!

Linda, So true, that anything can happen. Your seedlings look great. The first datura bud fell off but the plant next to it should open today. Ill go check on it. Those blooms/ buds on the daturas appear to be really small compared to the wild jimson weed that grows in he ground on its own. Im thinking it its because ive got them stunted in little drinking cups.

Allan, your plant looks great.

Thanks L&A :-)

Howdy Hurstwood... wandering how long it take the seed you sent my to come up? I have been waiting 2 weeks. I peeled the cork. Just wondering the the 2 weeks to 2 month rule applies to these as well.
Thanks bunches

Hi Rapssody, I have seeds that are just now sprouting and they were planted 1/12.
don't give up.

Burnley, United Kingdom

I rarely give up on 'important' seeds :-)
The majority should germinate within the first 2-3 weeks but it could be 2-3 months!
Good luck
Alan

Long Beach, CA

Thank you both. Will keep posted!

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Three weeks for this bud to open. I wonder if that is the normal amount of time for a bud to open.

This is the flower from the cross of Hurstwood Francisco x Hurstwood Hannah. I think she is very
pretty.

Sorry about the blurry pictures. The first 2 were with the flash and the last 2 without.

I'll get some better pics tomorrow. The flower just opened this afternoon.

Mesilla Park, NM

That is really a beauty, you can see how dark it os already and it just opened. Are you saying this is one of the seedlings that germinated in 11-27-13,?

Great progress! I love it.

My seedlings are still growing, all really healthy, no buds yet or Y s. I had one little scare on one seedling, i thought i had stem rot on one, but when i dug it up, it seemed alright, ill just have to keep a close eye on it and cut it off and try to root whats left. Other than that i have about six at are at the 14 " level. The rest are at about 10-12 inch level, and a few very small ones that are very healthy.

There is that one that looks like the stem is two stems, but joined, very strange and has a cluster of leaves in the center that look like buds, then they turn out to be leaves, but several leaves at a time.

Now Im getting the anxious and excitement adrenalin going here after seeing yours.

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Yes it was planted 11/27/13. It is one of three seedlings from that cross. I've been fighting spider mites on one seedling, don't know if it will make it. The other just keeps growing. All of them
are feed the same strength of miracle grow.
Yours will bloom soon.

Mesilla Park, NM

Linda, i wonder if you stuck the seedling in a tent like , put it inside a plastic bag, like a mini greenhouse environment, maybe that will suffocate the spider mites .after you clean them off. There is a granule you can use that you put on top of the soil over the roots, but with pets i afraid to use anything like that. And the roots may not be strong enough to take treatment.

Try bathing and dunking it into tepid/warm water twice a day till it shows some new growth. If it is only one seedling it is worth a try. I dont know how long i would be willing to do several seedling everyday using the dunking method for lack of a better term. But id try a few on these guys. Sometimes its too late of course.

Well, either way, you've done a great job with these plants.

Rhaps, how are your seeds coming along.. Im sure your excited about them also. Pics, pics!

Here are mine today.. Very healthy plants.. I really take care of these babies. These are Arborea S. x. H. Sunshine

On one you can see the mushroom growth on the bottom. All are in fron of my clothes washer and dryer so you can gage the size of the plants as far as width. I did put a yard stick in the middle so you can see the height.

The photos are dark because it's in the laundry room. I'll try again.

Hopefully you can see the one that is fooling me, the leaves are so tightly rolled that they look like tiny buds... I went and got my magnifying glasses ,,, but no bud!

Edited to change the word rooted to rolled...

These are still barely fitting on the rack. Will have to move some in the next week I'm sure.

Linda, are you using bloom booster by miracle grow yet? Is so, when do you start to feed bloom boosters? I've been mixing kelp, miracle grow, fish emulsion and sometimes throw in some superthrive in the water too. Very diluted though. Each plant takes up one plastic shoe box because of its spread. I just use the shoeboxes as plant saucers.. For drainage.

You are running out of room. Mine are in the sunroom, but don't get alot of sun. They do get
alot of bright light.
I use 20-20-20 Miracle grow. The small end of the scoop to about 1 and a half gallon of water.

this pic shows a good color on the flower.

On the plant that has the mushroom like growth, does it look like this?

This plant has not bloomed and is scheduled for a date with the compost bin.

Unpotted it and this is what was there. Some roots were on the bottom of it.

What would it be called?

First off, congrats. Linda, lovely blooms, big question- any fragrance? My seedlings of this cross are no where near blooms :-(

Antoinette, I can't remember the technical name for the root cluster (I'll trawl through my notes if you really want the tech.name ;-) ) but it's a 'quirk' that can happen on certain plants. I have a large specimen of Gelber Engel that has a root system that looks more like a tuber! It will never recover but it's not contagious but could be genetic?

Warmer weather is on it's way then we can get our plants outside and allow them to grow in an healthy environment.

Mesilla Park, NM

Linda, those look like nematodes. My mushroom is like a cluster of leaves, very tiny leaves all around the bottom stem Ina ring like fashion. The plant itself is about 15/18 inches tall and very healthy otherwise. I had to reset my iPad to the factory setting so lost the photos I took today. I'll take some more tomorrow. That one with the tuber looking growth looks like it has a stem that is growing up on the side of it. Can you cut it off and root it?

Alan, thanks for the information , I've seen this cluster mutation on other plants in the past. Do these plants continue on growing to maturity and on to bloom?

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Antoinette, that plant had not bloomed at all so it was already headed for the compost bin. So
there would be no reason to try to root it.

Finally got my color chart (ruler) from BGI and the pink bloom matches #89 as far as I can tell there
is no fragrance. (but I do have a cold) My Arborea doesn't have a fragrance either. :(

Mesilla Park, NM

Mine are all repotted into larger pots, and are all outside. I put them out there overnight a few days ago, then potted them up the next day. This is day number four outdoors and the temps at night at at about 45-50 degrees F.

How's everyone doing.

Rapsody, how are your seeds coming along? I'm worried that it might be too hot here for them, I got my sprinkler ready and my mister fan.

Waving to everyone...

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Your lucky to get yours out. The weather is cold here right now, maybe another week or so.
When they finally get outside, the wind will knock them over. It's not going to be pretty.
I'll have to try and figure something out.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Antoinette way to go on your seedlings!! It will be exciting to see what colors are produced.

Linda....luv, luv your blooms!! Are yours all from your own crosses or Alan's?

Alan, still haven't had time to start the seeds from you. Hopefully soon.

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Hi Perennial girl, those are from Alan's crosses that I purchased. We should be seeing
blooms from Alan's and Antoinette's plants soon.

Mesilla Park, NM

Hi there Donna,
Get yours started so we can grow them together!

Linda, I was worried the last two nights, but the seedlings are real troopers, temps in the 40s. I know they needed fresh air and dappled shade. They were starting to look sad no matter what I did.

Hi Ladies
Hope your all well.
I have a seedling just about to open it's first bloom:-) , it's maybe a week or so but I will post a picture.
Come on Donna, get those seeds sown.
Alan

Burnley, United Kingdom

The bloom on the above mentioned seedling is open :-) 5 months from sowing to bloom. think my 'early blooming traits' are definitely established.
Better pics on my Blog but here's a taster:-
Hurstwood Francisco X Hurstwood Hannah
I was hoping for a little richer colour from H. Hannah but its OK and I am achieving the move to more Vulcanicola form bloom from H. Francisco.
Hope you like?
Alan

Ummm, how cool! What's great about these plants is just the fact that they bloom so fast too, from seed. I have a Frosty Pink that I got six years ago that has never bloomed, it was about to this past year, but the bud fell off as winter hit. And this was a rooted plant a friend sent me. It should bloom this year as it has a huge Y.

Alan, This one reminds me of this long tubed ichrohemas. I know I didn't spell that right. I personally love this color too. Do you start seeds anew each year or do you keep a couple of older established plants around? I'd love to see a picture of an older plant and how it looks in full bloom.

Mine don't have Y's yet, I'm a month behind you guys from sowing date. They are doing fine in dappled shade and the weather. Only thing is I can't move them out because of the winds here. They have not received any fertilizers in almost two weeks. I didn't want to stress them after transplanting them. I think it's time to feed them.

Thank you for posting updates and photos..very encouraging to me.

Hi Antoinette
If I have any seedlings that I think have possibilities at the end of the growing year then I will keep them over winter and grow them on in the second year.
They have to bloom in the first year so I can make that decision, I already over winter over 100 plants in large pots and can't squeeze many more into winter quarters !
I do grow 50-60 seedlings each year from my hybridising programme so the numbers get ever larger! LOL
You can see pictures of the parents to this seeds and lots of others on my Blog, have you seen my Blog?
Alan

Mesilla Park, NM

Oh wow, I just went to see them. You have some nice parents there.

Alan, how often do you fertilize and what do you use? I was wondering if you can use bloom booster, and is it better to wait till the plants produce a Y, before using any bloom boosters.

Thank you for responding.

Brugs are very greedy plants, I feed with a balanced feed until I see a bud then I switch to a high Potash feed (Tomato feed for example) I feed this then until winter. I also feed with Black Molasses and liquid Seaweed. I use this concoction every time I water, like I said 'greedy plants' It works for me :-)

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Nice color on them. Will the tendrils turn up later?

Burnley, United Kingdom

I wanted the colour as deep as H.Hannah but it's the first step.
Do you mean when will the tendrils 'recurve' Linda ?
Alan

Kansasville, WI(Zone 5a)

Yes. I just couldn't think of the word for it.

Burnley, United Kingdom

LOL, they have re curved a little but not much.

Long Beach, CA

Kind of bombed out. I was told they cold brugs are relatively bloomless. I expected them not to be heave bloomers just because it is so warm where I live but I was thinking that they would put out a flush or two a year.

Rhaps

Mesilla Park, NM

Hey guys, I have a bud! I have not fed the plants at all. So I'm really surprised to see one made a Y. I'll post more details whe I take photos.
A.

Looking forward to that picture...
