I've been Adding Details to some of my Plant Files today and would like to make the following comments.
Firstly, under Danger we have, currently:
Please check all that apply:
Seed is poisonous if ingested
Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested
All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested
Handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction
Plant has spines or sharp edges; use extreme caution when handling
Pollen may cause allergic reaction
N/A
I would very much like to add another checkbox, viz:
Sap is poisonous or caustic, avoid contact with skin and eyes
This is a different scenario from any of the above - I can "handle" my Euphorbias all day without difficulty, but I will be racing for the cold tap if I get the sap on my skin.
Secondly, under propagation methods we have, for seed
From seed; direct sow outdoors in fall
From seed; winter sow in vented containers, coldframe or unheated greenhouse
From seed; stratify if sowing indoors
Direct sow as soon as the ground can be worked
From seed; sow indoors before last frost
From seed; direct sow after last frost
From seed; germinate in a damp paper towel
From seed; germinate in vitro in gelatin, agar or other medium
Scarify seed before sowing
NONE of these will work for tropical and sub-tropical exotics such as cacti and succulents which require warmth to germinate!
Could we at least have
From seed; sow in pots in glasshouse
OR
From seed; sow in pots, requires warmth to germinate
as a new option.
Ciao, KK.
PS: If this post is not in the proper place for these requests, please feel free to move it to the correct forum - I feel both of these changes are important and I would like to see them discussed
Adding Details to Plant Files entries
We can always add more checkboxes..the problem becomes trying to figure out which existing entries will require updating/changing.
what if we did the following?
1. Change "Handling plant may cause skin irritation or allergic reaction"
to "Handling plant may cause irritation or allergic reaction due to sap or other plant parts"
and
2. Change "From seed; sow indoors before last frost"
to "From seed; sow indoors before last frost; provide bottom heat"
More specific directions or admonitions can be added via a comment.
2. Not all sow indoor plants require bottom heat.
...provide bottom heat as needed" ?
Re point one - What I want to do is to differentiate BETWEEN the kinds of plants which have caustic sap, ie Euphorbia, and the kinds of plants where touching them causes a bad reaction, like Poison Ivy. I would be perfectly happy to reset all the Euphorbiaceae for you - I certainly don't mind - it's only 1200 or so and that would be the majority of them - there are a few other groups where this applies, but the Euphorbiaceae is the biggest. As I say I don't mind doing the details - I need to get my score up anyway, LOL!
Also re point two - the problem is that there are so many options for frost and none for plants requiring warmth above that basic level. Not every place in the world has to contend with snow and ice in the winter, but many of us still have weather periods which are too cold to grow these plants without artificial help.
Anyway, that more or less covers what I had in mind,
Ciao, KK.
