Hi Amanda,

I would like to join, too.
I have so many seeds 'drying' that I have collected all summer.

I am working on the milkweed seeds.

Judy

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Amanda ~ I have been collecting seeds all summer now and I will have a small but interesting mix to offer. I wasn't going to join, but I just could not resist. I would like to share what I have. No sense in saving them all for myself.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Smart thinking Evelyn and Judy. I like to tell people I have more seed than I can ever use. Just a matter of getting them to the post.

Glad to have you aboard! :)

Concord, NH

may I join in the fun?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Of course! But only if you look at my posies first.

These are flowers from Max's Memory Garden. This is similar to the simple bouquet she held when she went to the crematorium. Sorry this is a little morose, but most of you have helped me to build it and make it a heart stopping sight almost every day.

Thank you so much.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh, yeah? Well, here's a button for you, Amanda!

Will post soon - I've been baking for business lately & no time for getting
my lists up.

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Hi....didn't know you gals were doing a swap this fall.... I just mailed out seed for another swap but still have some and can collect more from the garden. Can I get in? Seeing alot of names from last year...hi ladies!!!!!

Birder...got a packet of seed sitting here for you. Dianthus X Loveliness white. Just made up the other day. Will have to let me know if you want shipped separately or if joining and will include here.... (See, I remembered)...lol.

Amanda..will you be accepting seed early so there's something in the swap to begin with?

Alot of you gals know some of the things in my garden....are there any special requests? (will try to post some things but will be later as I have to see what I have and make a list....)

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

I have one other request...is it possible for better labeling this year.....Ie, name (latin if possible too), Height, if it resseeds to the point of becoming a pest or just at the plant's feet, color, and it's nice to know if it's fragrant too...lol. Hope that's not too much to ask. Kathy

Here's one of my oddball Cosmos from this season...

I've been trying to put the zone info on all my packets. Being in zone 9 a lot of my seed won't survive the colder zones and I hate to have someone be dissapointed. Also annual / perennial is nice. The reseeding thing is a bit difficult as that really depends on where you live. I always put the latin if I can locate it, I learned that from a local nurseryman, really helps when it comes to looking it up. I've gotten so many seeds that the common name brings up 10 different plants when you put it in the search box. Really if everyone was to do their best to put the latin name on them it would help alot.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Glad to see you Kathy. I was counting on you to join.

Of course I will accept seed at the beginning as well. I think Susie may be donating some and I will add my (very) odds and ends. :)

I'm big on rules and I've established basic labeling rules in the first post. I know we all have seed from trades and seeds of our own that are ten years old but still viable. However, this group swap is based on a certain level of trust and familiarity with one another. Respect has to be earned so I'm asking you to treat the Robin as though it were a one on one trade.

I've traded with most of you individually very happily. Although I am often delayed by the constant calamity that is my existence, I believe I've been open in my communications, sent more than you asked for, and always sent healthy plants and fresh seed. Likewise I'm hopeful that we will all be delighted with the Robin where ever it lands because each of us will treat the Robin the way we expect to be treated.

Folks New to the Robin, don't be afraid to ask questions. Posted all over DG is the saying the the only stupid question is the one that's not asked. Or something.

We're all grown ups here. I'm counting on you to help me maintain the high standards Susie set for us back when. If something turns up in the Robin that is questionable, please direct your inquiry/concern to me first. As I am your host for this particular Robin, it seems to me to be the polite thing to do.

Thanks for letting me run on. Lately I've been channeling Lucy van Pelt, and like her, I was born crabby.

I hope last night's post wasn't too much.

The Robin's supposed to be FUN. :D

I guess it was a rough day/week - we've had a lot of calamity in the neighborhood (!) so at least it's not been my personal calamity.

Still, we've been really stressed, and I was just letting you know that I was Born Crabby.

p.s. Still trying to get cooperation from my graduate committee on my master's work to graduate this spring too. As Charlie Brown would say "ARRRGHHHH!"

Iowa City, IA(Zone 5a)

Kathy, that cosmos looks like sixteen candles, the variety that I grow.

I'm excited about the Robin. I'm working on making better seed envelopes than the ones I sent for the seed purge.

Also, I'm excited that it will take flight on my birthday! :D

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

iowhen...just to let ya know...these came from regular Sensation and I think one other variety If I remember I will post....lol. Sorry, duh!

Amanda, I looked at your posies and I liked them. Now that I'm uniquely qualified to join the Robin, can you sign me up? Sounds like fun for my first big seed adventure.

Just one question; what's a reasonable number of seeds to include in each envelope? I'll post my haves and wants on the new thread.

Robin

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

Aside from the year of harvest and the donor's name, the only info I need on a pack of seeds is the botanical name and varietal name if there is one. Everything else is easy to find from that information. This was going to be seed gathering day for this swap, but it's raining :(
Next weekend....

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

GM all Just wanted to let you all know that I Sent all the seeds from the last robin to Amanda to share with you LOTS Of Seeds but there are some that I would not add but going to leav it up to Amanda to decide on .

I didn't get to many of my seeds in the box for many were not ready to share & its rainy now & They wouldn't have been dry enough to share .
I will list them on the have & wants & will share with all who wants.

as for amount of seeds I had always said that it was best to put seeds all in one baggie
for everyone to share this will help weight of robin & postage cost .

rather then adding 5-10 packs of the same seeds for everyone. Here is what I mean if you have 30 Players there is plenty of seeds in each of these packs to share with everyone .
One person cannot use a whole baggie UNLESS They are Greedy & Using them to share with other SEED Swaps & It Has been done & Your Taken away from Others in this robin .
Just my 2 cents to a good robin .

Print on paper the info , INK OR PENCIL is Best to use & put it inside or Tape it to the outside .
Printer labels are better. if you can do it .
these are from my garden that i will planting up in the woods this spring
but i will have some extras to share just wanted to share how i label .

Amanda Thank you for taking Over The robin & yes I will be Watching :) You have a great Bunch of traders already :) well best get off here i have a baby rooster under my chair waiting for his treat :) have a great weekend back later .

same here alana all i need is basic info but is nice to have if it is from their Garden or from trade .

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Just posted (and just beginning, will add more as I make them up) on the other thread my haves. Please if you want something let me kow and I will mark it with your name.

I will probably be making individual packets and some of the more available seed I might put into a large baggie for those to take what they want.. If you see something you might like let me know and I'll put your name on a packet... that way you are assured to get it as it might not be there when it arrives at your home. Last year when the robin got to me most of the things I had sent in in the beginning were already gone...so don't be shy...if I have them I will gladlly share!!! If pix are needed of something I probably have, just ask...or growing info. Most things that I have were most likely grown from seed to begin with and have growing info., germination time, sowing depth, etc....can ask if needed. I have found that most everything is easy.... Of course there are always exceptions...always are..lol. I bought my Crambe cordifolia, but I did collect seed this year and have plenty to share, just ask and a baggie will be made. Also Iris setosa, origional was bought but now have seed...but a big oops..I put some in a baggie (opened), but it turned moldy, in another bag I emptied the pods after they were dried, so lessoned learned, but I still have plenty if some of you might like to try them.

Pix
1. Dianthus deltoides 'Zing'
2. Iris setosa, 18", same time a TBIs.
3& 5. some of the Viola JJs mix
4. Crambe cordifolia, Giant Sea KAle, Far left, looks like a big ball of Baby's Brath, fragrant, 4-6ft ^x 4-6ft >

I Want this Iris setosa, 18",

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, your stuff always looks so awesome! :)

Packing things individually is so brave and sooo time consuming. I guess it would cut down on the time needed to keep the Robin in each place too. I know Heidi posted those rules in the Seed Purge. I think the thing would be to put in at least as many packets of a single species as there are participants so everyone can taste a sample.

Last year someone new sent me a Dmail and asked about how to do this, particularly when there aren't enough seeds in a bag to take and leave for someone else.

I said use your best judgment. If there are only ten seeds and it's something particularly difficult to germinate . . . I might take all ten! But if the seeds are in a giant bag and abundant obviously it's not quite the same moral dilemma.

I'm usually guilty of putting those bigger bags of seed in on things that are difficult to separate chaff from seed (everything in my opinion!). I'll do better this time. :)

Rain again here. Don't mind it, just feel better with sun.

Hope everyone's enjoying their Saturday. I hear things falling and banging upstairs. Better go see what the cats are up to. :/

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Thanks all for the info, I was thinking individual envelopes/baggies for as many as the supply could accommodate; however, as DJ9 suggested, one baggie would be less weight for shipping (especially good for those with a moral conscience).

Seems to me Kathy has the perfect compromise...individual 'named' baggies for requests and the rest in bulk... IMHO.

Thanks Amanda, that would be great. I always grow a couple of groups of 3 Tithonia plants of one kind or another but I was thinking that it would be fun to grow a garden row of nothing but in various shades of gold/orange/red.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Sure, next season Court and I are going to alternate them out front with purple castor beans. :D

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

alana I Would like to try some of your Tithonia I have never grown them I Love my fall garden bed here by the House :) red , yellow, Oranges, & Purples so if you have any extra maybe you can put my name on them don't Need allot :)
TY well got to go into town for a bit so back later

Kiowa, CO(Zone 5b)

Ok, susie, all bagged up fo you...

Poisondart...I'ld love some of the tallest variety..... (saw some at the Bot. Gardens years ago and thought they were wonderful...about 6ft if I remember).

Pix is of the 10-15 year old seed that I included in last years swap (after I germinated it first), and threw some seed in the garden this last spring....lol...those I grew inside never saw the ground but those that I threw came up just great. Will have to collect fresh seed this season. Ammi carota, red, VERY RARE.....can get to about 30", (here was only 18"...dang nabit drought). Should have plenty of seed for those wanting to try...
