October Blooms

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Do you think that means their pollinator doesn't live around here?

Arlington, TX

I don't know but will see what I can find out. Most salvia make large amounts of small seeds and I am not sure why this one doesn't for me.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I have never seen seeds on mine either.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Here are couple fuzzy shots of my confederate rose hibiscus. I hope you can tell what it looks like. I only get a clear photo every once and a while. I had the ladder out this AM so climbed up and got these shots. I get to look at this out my sliding glass door in the end of my kitchen.

Very pretty Marty.

Newtonsthirdlaw - Love those pitcher plants! Don't think I've seen that many colors before. And how do they grow? Sun? Shade? Anywhere? In the ground? In pitchers? Ok. I'll check them out on the DG Garden Guides.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm loving these soft pink Sheffield Daisies from Sheila.

Well here is one of my favorite combinations for fall taken this morning.
Purple Fall aster, Heath aster, and Red Autumn Sage, this bed is at the Fielder House.
Followed by yours truly and my friend and helper Jane.

Frostweed - Great picks and pics. Maybe I need to get me a color wheel. :D

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Beautiful flowers and beautiful ladies! I have been very impressed with my Purple Aster this year.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

tx_flower_child, I've been known to ask for plants at the RUs based on Josephine's pictures! LOL

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Gorgeous fall blooms, Josephine! My asters aspire to look like that. They are getting better each day.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Everyone, those flowers make me very happy and I love to share them when possible.
I wish the asters had a longer bloom period.

Wow I wish my garden looked half as good as some of you ladies'!!
Maybe next year my winter sowing endeavor will have given me lots to plant out!!
Anyway here's my late bloomers :)

1. Close up bloom of knock out rose. Wish I knew the name!
2. Salvia mainacht
3. Knock out rose bush
4. Red mums, they've been in this pot on my porch for 3 years, through winters and summers!

Very nice blooms, Stillplayswdirt.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Still plays, that is a truly gorgeous mum. Ive never seen a true red before. May Night Salvia and Hot Lips are looking good too. I know what you mean about the Mex petunias. We had agood rain and it knocked off all the blooms so it will be a few days before more.. Or not, because it is getting late in the season.

Thanks! I hate to post my newbie pics here, but I couldn't resist :) Why do my pics come out sideways sometimes?
Steadycam - I would love to see your garden, you have some gorgeous plants!! I might have to "borrow" your idea of pairing the yellow leaf datura with the hyacinth bean vine.. Love the color combo!
The mums are a nice red, aren't they? They'll look much better next spring now that I've learned how to properly prune them, like I said I'm still learning here. I wonder if I could take cuttings before a freeze hits? Or if they would do okay in the ground? Time to google! Btw I'm loving these Texas gardening forums!

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Im not sure about the sideways thing. Ive heard different explanations. I think Kittriana knows why. Maybe you could ask her. I download my photos by taking the card from my camera and sticking it in my laptop where I can rotate the photos and save them with the proper orientation before posting them. Ive heard it said that the sideways thing happens with smart phones but I dont really know.

Borrowing ideas is one of the main purposes served by DG, so borrow away!!!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

That makes sense, I usually DG on my iPhone. I'll see if I can find her and at least ask if DG prefers one orientation to the other.

Yes this website is amazing, I have learned soo much!! :D

In reference to the salvia seeds, I found this forum on ATP:

http://allthingsplants.com/thread/view/8904/salvia-greggii/?offset=20

I still wish I could find seeds on my S. greggii.. Can't seem to find that info..

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

But I did find this handy dandy link on salvia saving, especially helpful for my mainacht:

On any Salvia, they will bloom from the bottom of the spike upward. That means the seeds at the bottom mature first and probably will have fallen off before the spike is finished blooming. I take a bowl to the garden and take the whole spike before it finshes blooming. I take the bowl of spikes indoors and allow it to sit and dry for about a week. Then I rub the spikes with the seed heads over the bowl and the dark brown seeds will fall into the bowl. If you have a lot, it might be useful to use a piece of screen selected to allow the seeds to go thru and the chaff to be screened out. The seeds are shaped like grains of rice but much smaller.

Yes I just ran out and collected a lot of the little "bells", split one open and there are tiny little green bumps still attached. That's so awesome I know where to look now :)

ok guys, sitting in Green Bay- there are several reasons on the side flip thing. 1) Older computers didnt automatically size your pix (a programming improvement in later years) Has to do with the computers operating system (IOS? ) . On a cellphone it depends on the server- ATT/ VERIZON/ SPRINT/ STRAIGHTTALK...you can get photobucket or instgram and I believe these programs correct the pix automatically. I do know with my straighttalk phone, I go to the menu-more- and then crop. If you crop the picture to the same size as it already is, apparently it shaves just enuff off the picture to allow it to be vertical instead of horizontal when you send it to DG. NO other adjusts necessary. If you dump your pix to computer, the cropped ones arent always as clear, and are harder to work with. Att I never had that problem with. Beautiful blooms you guys! All I see are trees changin colors and mums and punkins! Happy Halloween!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Kittriana, I'm going to try that :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Just had to say that Kittriana's suggestion worked! Was confronted with sideways pics again and I cropped it ever so slightly just to shave off enough to prompt my photo editor into thinking I had edited it and worked like a charm, they were all right side up!

Sugarland, TX(Zone 9a)

Steady cam are your confederate flowering in Houston? They look gorgeous. Need to look up your have and want list.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, Jamper. I dont know what I will have after this freeze but they start around mid October and bloom all thru November and sometimes December if weather allows. I'll be glad to start you some cuttings or from seed for planting in Spring if you like. Just LMK. Where is Greatwood?

Sugarland, TX(Zone 9a)

Need to post I have some daylilies that are extra as well as Cannas and ferns I need to post. Will take some pics and post. Regards. J
