Thread Watcher Failure

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

I thought Thread Watcher showed up when someone else responds to a thread you responded to. This keeps you in the circle of the conversation.

Many times--(not always) I am not notified in the Thread Watcher. I miss out on what others are saying. I had started a thread last year. Someone responded to this thread this past week. I did not know about this response until I just happened to go to the forum and scroll down and found my thread.

Could someone tell me if I am doing something wrong?

At the top of the thread there is a link called "Watch Thread" If you click on it, any time a post is made it will tell you when you first open to DG.

Make sure you have Thread Watcher selected and set up for your custom home page. I like mine in the center right at the top.

So, I went into "Preferences"

There's a box in front of "Auto Watch Threads"

This Is CHECKED. Is there something else I should be doing?

This thread did not show up on my home page to tell me I had two responses to this thread.

Thanks to both of you for responding.

scroll to the top of this thread and just above the blue line click on the "watch thread" That should show up on your home page when you first go to DG

Go to preferences, then go down the left side till you see "Custom Home Page" then select where you want the watched threads to appear.

If you have marked the box in your preferences to auto-watch threads AND that thread is in your watched threads list (you can always opt out of a thread, even if you started it or posted to it), you should get an alert when anyone else posts to that thread.

If you didn't get a notification, I'd start by checking the thread itself; if the link at the top says "Watch Thread" you are not currently watching it. (If it says "Unwatch Thread" that means you are already watching it :-)

Terry,
I stopped this e-mail because I didn't have time to "concentrate" on your advice.

So, after reading it several times, I went to preferences to see if I had check marked "Auto Watch Thread" and I currently have "32 forums" I have check marked to watch.

Here is an example of what happens (just today).

I started a thread about Gaura in the Perennials forum August 6, 2013.

On November 6th, I received a response.
I check the home page of the Dave's Garden Website probably three times every day. And YET, nothing showed me I had received a post on Nov. 6th on my home page of Dave's Garden until today, November 15th when someone else posted on the Gaura thread.

What Gives???? It appears I have done everything above that was suggested.

I have reviewed "My Preferences"
1. I have check marked "Auto Watch Preferences"
2. I have check marked "Perennials"

Sometimes, people offer me seeds or plants, and by the time I find out about it, others have already taken the offer. OR, it looks like I am uninterested.

BTW, the top of this page above the blue line says "Unwatch Thread"

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Please go to your home page and see if it shows up in your thread watcher now.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

What is "it"? Sorry I am not following.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Okay, I think you meant the Gaura thread. Yes, it did show up.

So, please tell me what is wrong so I can learn for future reference.

Sometimes threads I respond to show up right away, and sometimes they don't.

You spoke of an update. Was I suppose to have done something?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, and I don't think the system is failing.

I think - just a guess here - that you may have simply overlooked the thread update. It happens to us all; we post to a thread, but our eyes simply skip over the thread watcher alert when it appears on our home page. We miss it. If you have several threads on your watched list, it can be easy to look past one in the list.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Terry, I don't think that is it. I only have four threads that I am watching. Gaura would make it 5.

Two of which I keep on the home pg. for quick referral. Nothing has been written since 7-10-2010 on one & the other hasn't been updated since 1-29-13.

That actually leaves three that I am responding to.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I really can't offer you any other explanation - it is working now, we've had no other complaints of this nature, and as far as I can tell, my watched threads are flagging correctly.

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

Terry, do you think it could be my computer?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Probably not your computer. I might suspect the browser, but if your thread watcher is working properly now, it's not likely that there's a setting that should be adjusted.
