FALL 2013
Very nice. I'll say-- they do look good.
I'll second that!!
Since I want more garden color, and since the plant sales are ON, I came home today with two Pink Lady hellebores, one 'Jacob' Hellebore, Aster 'Woods Blue', Sedum 'Neon,' Ecki 'Southern Belle,' and two more nepetas--'Blue Cloud' and 'Montrose white.'
Two clematis virginiana vines found their home in amended soil by the fence, and hardy arctic kiwi kolomikta, 'Pasha' is in and happy. Its mate, 'September Sun' perished in shipping so no fruit. Good thing I work tomorrow, or there'd be more pocketbook damage.

you've been very busy
thanks you Rosemary and Jan23, Rosemary you and I have lots of planting to do . I went to Dear Born Market in NJ last week and I bought some Hyacinth bulbs and I previously ordered some alliums .
The white nepeta sounds interesting, Rosemary.....I was in your area Sat....went to a birthday party in Harvard.
Harvard, Mass? Color on the trees would have been getting quite nice, and it still is. I'm sure you could give me a lot of gardening suggestions if you ever visit here.
real close to me Marilyn - you could have stopped and helped with fall clean-up:)
The weather was not nice! Sunny & warm when I left CT, drizzly & cold in MA......The friends of mine who had the birthdays now live in Foxboro, but used to live in Harvard, & their daughter still lives there. Lots of apple orchards! Quite a few folks were invited, it was a total surprise to the couple....they thought it was a party for their youngest grandson, who turned 4 the next day....lots of tears & hugs.......Then I left & picked up I-89 in Concord & drove to relatives in Enfield, NH.
Hope you got some fresh farm apples while you were in Harvard area, Marilyn. I don't even have a favorite orchard, and there are so many.
No, I just didn't have time! Stayed at the birthday party until 4, but I had never picked up I-89 through Nashua, it was drizzly & getting darker out by the minute...I was afraid I'd miss the signs. There's a wonderful orchard to the west of me....they have some heritage apples, & I'm getting to love Liberty & Spartan, 2 varieties they grow.
My grandmother used to treasure her Snow apple, which came from seeds brought over from France. I have one in a pot which I ordered from Forest Farm and if there's ever time to learn how, I want to graft it onto one of my existing apple trees. Carlson Orchards from the Harvard area has the same thing--owner said their grandparents also planted one near their house just for the family.
Snow apples are my favorites. You don't see them too often.
I had one Snow apple that I ordered from an heirloom apple place which was not in business very long because the owner died. I thought it was a winner......Memory, you are a wonderful person to give away pumpkins to your neighbors!
Too bad we're not all next door to the pumpkins! You can have one big pumpkin pie party!
I know the snow apple is a McIntosh parent, and that it is not as resistant to pests, but to anyone who has ever had one, with its deep red skin and white flesh and sweetness, it has to be the apple the witch would have given to Snow White.
I see it first appeared in 1739 and doesnt store well.Probably why its not abundant commercially.
There are so few apples that are good for baking and pies.

I have always like Mcintosh.
Bill: I dont know where to begin. What beautiful gardens. Thanks for the wide shots.
thanks joann - always think of you when I take the wide shots - I like them as well, gives a better feel of what the yard really looks like.
Thank you for the show, wha!!! I also like wide shots.
I'm sure that Bill's JMs are wonderful color in the fall. I have been so busy working near the ground that it is hard to look up & see the color.
Marilyn try any Acer Japonicum - fall color without fail, I could recommend a few.
Marilyns bloom colors are just what I'm craving. Bill's kaku jm looks pretty nice with its yellow too.
Yes, that's a beauty for sure......thanks, Bill......I guess I just never thought about fall color when I was choosing mine......
they also have nice flowers in the spring that are bright red and nicely contrast with the new green leaves.
Bill, all great, but especially liked that redbud hazel. Looked it up, may try one. Hardiness borderline for me but might be worth a shot. How many years have you had it?
i have had two of them - first one almost died from heavy snow lifting it out of the ground, got another and nursed the other one back to life.
maybe 6-7 years, they seem pretty hardy. got both of mine locally and large. mixed border in hollis, nh was where I found the last one.
I love my Montauk daisies....have several clumps out by the roadside......
i need to get some
