Fall Swap 2013 Sallyg's DISCUSSING haves and wants

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

I'm planning on doing the garlic bulb thing again with Garlic Man or other sources of garlic we can find in time for Sally's swap or later for Jill's Bulb Sort in October..

Let me know your interest over on our Garlic thread over here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1317821/

I met up with Garlic Man at Farmers Mart this morning. He's been growing garlic on a large scale for almost 10 years on a half acre. Of the nine varieties he grows, the following will be available at our swap. Eat them or grow them or both!

Elephant Garlic $2

Hardnecks:
Chesnok Red $1
Music $1
German White $1
Georgian Fire $1

Softnecks:
Oregon Blue $.75
Wiiamette $.25

Bulbs are smaller than last year as this was worst season in 10 years.

Thanks, Judy

I may be sticking my neck out, but Holly and I will be home next fall, and have been discussing hosting a Fall Swap 2014. Many of you have only seen our place in the spring, and we would like to invite everyone back in a more mature season.

I'm sooo bummed out missing this fall:-{

Just wanted to remind everyone that I have a good supply of rooted:

-Inky Fingers Coleus--(32 rooted plants) and the monster Mama plant "bush"..
This is such a prolific grower--that I think it would do well as a houseplant.
-Mocha Coleus
-Hosta--"Green Fountain"
-Brazilian Plume flower (about 5or 6 left unclaimed)
-Wondering Jew
-Two or three truly Dwarf Hostas (green)...tiny! ..pretty blue blooms
--Rooting--NOT yet rooted--Twisted Lipstick plants.
PLEASE speak up if you would like to have any of these!!

Oh Ric and Holly it would be wonderful to see you and your place any time of year!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

hi, Gita. Could I have one of your Inky Fingers? It's such a pretty cultivar.
thanks!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cat--
Sure! I have them in 4-packs--so you will get 4. Make a cute 8" pot...
Thanks for asking...
Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, thanks for the nudge... I'd love to try your 'Mocha' and 'Inky Fingers' coleus.. bet they'd be pretty together! I'm going to be tucking coleus cuttings into every hanging basket and pot that comes inside this fall. :-)

Judy, Garlic Man's "worse season in 10 years" puts it in perspective that my garlic bulbs were small... at least I'm not growing to sell, just as an extra for my table. I love being a gardener, but I'm glad I don't have to depend on it for my livelihood.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: I'd love the small hostas and any of the Green Fountain you have left over! Thank you so much! I think I asked you earlier for some Inky Fingers -- that is such a cool plant.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

hi, Gita--I agree with Critter! I think the Mocha and Inky Fingers look great together! Could I have one of your Mocha as well? Thanks! :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I still have a lot Tall Bearded Iris 'Indian Chief'. Here is a photo of it blooming this past spring. It is a good bloomer.

Its so funny that you guys would say that the inky fingers and mocha would go well together. I have them in a pot together and can attest to their compatibility! I don't know if you can see the inky fingers in this pic (Posting from my phone) but here is my mocha anyway. It's a beauty by itself too.

OK here's a pic where you can actually see the inky fingers. Sorry about the last post that didn't show it. My IF is still little.

RIc and Holly, we'd love to come next fall

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

We would too. It is always fun to see the results of your projects! Plus you too are about the nicest people in the world!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Catmint, I'd love 'Indian Chief', please. I don't think I saw it bloom this past spring, and with the wet wet summer I'm not sure if it's recovering or gone... can't find the tag, LOL. It's an amazing color echo to some magenta columbines I have. I'll have to get you some seeds of them if I can figure out which one is which!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Karen--

Those two colors go together very well--as the dark areas of the
"Inky Fingers" compliment the Mocha.

Would you like to take a 4-pack of the rooted Pinky's?
I have SO many!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

You got it, Critter! Oh, I see I forgot the photo in my previous post!

Gita, Haha I see what you did there, pinky inky fingers! That is what you meant, right? I'll gladly take another 4. They really are worth carrying through winter.
I guess I should start considering what to do with my coleus for winter too. Does anyone want Swallowtail Coleus cuttings? It is fantastic and huge now. I gave some to Gita and Paul (Did they survive for you guys?). It came from Benkhe's so you know I paid too much for it. The colors in this pic are a little too purple but you get an idea anyway.
Cat, that Indian Chief is gorgeous. Wish I had a place for it.

Gita, can I have a bag of daff bulbs? And maybe one or two of your mums?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Karen--

Got you down for a 4-pack of Inky, Stinky, Pinky fingers....:o)
You should see the size of the whole "bush"! It is unbelievable!!!

I had forgotten who gave me THAT Coleus. Thanks for the reminder....
If you ever come this way again--I have others you may like...

Karen--I am wondering if we should move the Iris dig up some.
October is a bit late. As Jill mentioned--they need time to root in a bit.

Cat--what do you think? How about Sat. Sept. 14th? The next 2 are booked.
Also--the weather will be more favorable.

Happy--are you still interested?

You Guys can D-mail me to decide. Gita

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Karen--put you down for the daff bulbs and the Mums.

I have other Daff bulbs dug up too--if you want a couple kinds.
Or--Do you prefer the ones with the yellow trumpet only?

There is ONE bloom on the small Mums. Forgot to take a picture.

Correction----
The Mum's center is yellow--NOT pink. Bloom is about 1 1/2" big.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita,
I like the mums even better if the blooms are yellow, so sign me up for two, thanks! I like the huge yellow daffodils best. I have lots of smallish white petal ones with short orange trumpets and I don't really like them too much. I had bought a bunch of doubles for this past spring and most of them got bud blast, so I'm not buying more doubles because I've heard they are more susceptible. I was pretty sad about losing all those blooms. :( Will be digging them and moving them to a more protected spot this fall.
I think I can do the 14th as long as it's after lunch.
When you said you were wondering who gave you "that" coleus, is it because you like it or because you don't?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

typwc= I can share huge yellow daffodils next year- I'll mark where the clumps are.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

typwc, have you checked out the fall bulb group buy thread(s)? If you won't be around on party day, somebody may be able to relay bulbs to you. Your mention of big yellow daffs reminded me that my FIL has requested some... I think he was looking at 'California' (see https://www.adrbulbs.com/plantname/Narcissi-large-cupped-California looks like they'd be $6.25 per 25)... and he probably doesn't need a whole bulk bag (or rather, I don't need that many more to plant, on top of the ones I'm already planning to put in for them this year!).

Sorry about all the daffs that blasted. I put in loads of double and butterfly daffs 2 years ago, not in a sheltered area, and they bloomed gorgeously this spring. The first year, some did blast. Maybe yours just need to get settled in?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter, I'd love to try some magenta columbine seeds! What a great idea to plant them with the Indian Chief.

Gita, I'll have to check about Sat Sept 14th. I'm definitely tied up in the morning and early afternoon with parental duties, and there's a question mark for later in the afternoon that I need to clarify. I'm definitely free in the evening, though! :-)

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Sally, that would be really nice.

I really appreciate the offer Critter (what a great deal!), but I'm not partaking in any bulb purchases this year. I have a TON of stuff to move around this fall and I think that'll be enough work for me this time around. I won a $100 gift cert to Longfield Gardens last fall and now that everything has bloomed once, I have to get to work putting things where I want them for next spring. $100 buys a lot of bulbs for a townhouse garden.... If I buy anything, it'll just be more Red Darwins because in my opinion, you can never ever have enough of those. My front yard gets terribly windy, so I am moving them to the back yard which is a bit less so. Some of the doubles bloomed, but there were maybe 20 blooms out of 50 bulbs....

Bulb talk is reminding me that I have Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' to add to my HAVE list.

Gita: I'm not sure about the 14th and won't know until close to that date -- we've got a lot on our plate until the 12th and might have too much catching up to do. I'd like to do it! Our September/October is nuts this year.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Karen--

Me saying "THAT" had no other meaning....only that I have that coleus--
and could not remember who gave it to me. I think it is unique!
Nothing else implied.

Re the Mums---they are small double blooms with a deep yellow center.
Sort of the same color combo as the Daffs.
I do not plan to keep any myself--so those that want to have them--can have more...

OK--seems the 14th may not work. I will wait to see what you all think.
If any of you have a weekday free--I am usually off on Mon., Thurs., Fri., and Sat.

And if nothing works--we still have Oct. 5th which is OK. with everyone.

OK! Getting close to the "bewitching" hour. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: Don't give my schedule any consideration as you schedule -- my schedule is impossible this fall! But I'll do my best to make it!

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, May I have some of each coleus please.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Robin---

I have more kinds of Coleus than I posted above. Leave it to me--OK?
I will try to pot up one cutting from as many as I have to spare for you.

Today--Just NOW---I decided to cut all the ends off of all the stems of my
"Fishnet Stockings" Coleus--which has grown amazingly--and has
now reverted back from green to the "Fishnet" pattern. SO pretty!

Assuming they will root in the next 2 weeks--I will have 8 pots to share.
I totally expect that they will root.....or else.................:o
I imagine these should do well indoors--based on how robust they grew outside.
Moving mine from shade to more sun made it come back to the
Fishnet pattern on the leaves. Unless there were other reasons....

SO--that is all the news for today....plant wise....for the swap.

Anyone want some Lemon Balm plants? I have lots of babies I can pot up. They are about ten inches tall and haven't started to flower yet. They can be plopped in most anywhere to fill in for some past their prime plants.

Or perhaps a bouquet to use fresh or to dry?

TYPWC/Karen I'd like to try your Dazzleberry sedum if you have any left.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, I would love some of your lemon balm!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Great, I'll pot up 3 in one pot for you unless you want more

Coleup/Judy

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Coleup and Critter, I'll get you each a piece but the plant's been decimated so what you're going to get is not a big piece, nor will it be rooted in time for the swap. I'm very sorry that's the best I can do for you guys. But I hope you'll agree by next year this time, it's worth your wait.

Gita, Thank you for the mums and for the zillion other things you have already shared and have promised to share with me.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OOOPS....Did i forget to show you the ONLY bloom I have right now
of the MUM I am offering??? Just took this today.

It is small, compact, and cute. G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

typwc, keep "my" piece on your plant! I'll get a start next year, from you or from somebody you shared with this year. :-)

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Too late. It's already been done, critter. I think I might go buy another plant anyway. I really want to share it with you guys! :)
Beautiful color, Gita!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I just got back from 2+ weeks down in NC -- a week at the beach with my folks & my brother's family, then a week in Winston-Salem with Jim's family -- all wonderful, but I'm glad to be back home now & looking forward to getting into a routine after our summer of traveling & family visits.

There's a garden out there under the weeds, I'm sure. As I catch up, I'll be potting up bits of this and that. The (dis)Obedient Plant is starting to bloom, and I can see there's more of it than there needs to be...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Crabgrass KNOWS when people go on vacation. lol

Have I mentioned I need to give away a plumeria rooted stick? Or a whole huge thing? And I could also pass along a Strelitzia, lots of Black stem Taro, a tree size potted Cape Jasmine.... let's all take turns with these monsters LOL!

typwc thanks for your generosity wtih Dazzler!
