Knowledge that a true Southerner is born with

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Weel darius that explains why I ain't ketchin no snipes...I been usin' Dowitcher bait all the while. We did get a visit from 11 wild hen turkeys this morning though. Got some pictures too.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Me to Kikisdad, I was using the wrong bait. Post the photo of the turkeys. I remember once going out on Sunday evening to go to church and there was a flock of turkets roosting on my car. Man they scratched it up real bad.

Now I just thought of two southernisms we missed: fixin and favor. The first one has NOTHING to do with repairing anything - it's most common usage is in phrases such as "we're fixin' to go town."

And "favor" is not a kind deed when used in its most Southern-esque form; rather it has to do with bearing a familial resemblance, as in "you sure favor your daddy's side of the family."

Study this thread, and you might just pass for a southerner, but only if you remember to appear offended when asked if you want sweet tea or regular tea. That's a basic litmus test; the only right answer is sweet tea and no self-respecting southerner would EVER drink anything else :)

go vols I went to Canada lst year and they laughted at me when I wouldn't take tea and sweeten it myself. It can't be made to taste right if it ain't fixed right the first time.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Seems to me that sweet tea IS regular tea and anything else would be highly irregular!

Jim! Did you meet Shoe? I can just see you two getting along great!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

No Zany go back and read your previous post. hehe

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

When I make sun tea I always put the sugar in before it goes outside. Do people grunt worms up north??

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Jim! And here I was trying to picture you two together just talkin bout life and plannin how to spice it up!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Zany you are one great person. Well I told shoe to send you something for the compliment. It might be the shirt off his back. lol

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH! Zany, there ain't no "Plannin'" needed! It just comes natural! As for sending something, hmmmm. No GRC, I may not send the shirt off my back but have a couple spare fig leaves that might fit her nicely! ;>)

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Whooowheee! Blush at the thought of them Fig leaves! Less they are from the big leaf fig they wouldn't hide but a dimple on one cheek! Better make it some big old Elephant ears! Jim sent me one but it will be awhile before even those are big enough to cover this ole gal!

Crossville, TN

OH! I'm HOME...I declare this is the most good speechifying these old ears have heard in a coon's age! Now, about that POKE...the poke, as I was raised to understand it is not in the same class as a Toe/croaker sack. It is a paper bag. "do you want these put in a poke, or are you going to tote them in your arms"? I been feeling poorly today...just felt fair to middlin yesterday...hope I'm up to snuff tomorrow! When it was MY turn to have a new dress made...that meant it was also MY turn to go buy the feed for the chickens...that way I got to pick the print I wanted! I had a pair of underware about like GRC's sisters. During WW2 when no elastic was availabe, Mama used button on the "bloomers". During a Church program, here I was up on that stage, saying my part, and trying to keep those bloomers hitched up...unlike today, I was so skinny that they kept slipping down! Ya'll come back now, hear?? Jo

Mansfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Roadrunner you are correct. This old mind has really slipped a cog. A paper sack was a poke. When I read your
reply I remembered. LOL
