SUMMER 2013 #2

Thomaston, CT

Brilliant just went on my wish list!

South Hamilton, MA

The autumn joy isn't as colorful as usual this year. Strange when we have had so much rain, except in Aug. Brighter on the cape last week.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Whooeee! A friend just gave me a couple of big pots of AJ! Finally I have a good spot for them, and all the other sedums that didn't quite fit in to the central beds.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Autumn Joy is good here. If I get a break I'll send the pic.

Thomaston, CT

Pretty nice here as well.......

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Great!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Will dividing Autumn Joy stop it from flopping? or does pruning help?

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Don't know. Mine stays rather short and straight. Is it wilting in the sun?

Albany, ME(Zone 4b)

FlowAjen and Debi_k, I heard a story on Maine PR about the total absence of monarchs in Maine this year. They stressed the mystery of where they are. Why don't they talk to folks in Ohio and Illinois to see if they showed up there?? FlowAjen, I assume a monarch "cat" is a monarch caterpillar? Maybe monarchs were really late int the northeast like almost all the veggies and flowers in Maine????

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jen my AJ's in good soil do tend to flop so I jam a short stake and run so green wire around them in late summer - the ones in poorer soil are shorter and do not need staking.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

That's good to know! Mine in the pots are pretty tall, I'll try to keep them in leaner soil so they stay upright on their own.

Thomaston, CT

Mine don't flop....they are in sandy soil out by the road......

Yes that's what I meant. The master gardener's at the insect festival said they have seen a big decline this year...I really think it was because the hurricane because last year I had TONS of them

[quote="LAS14"]We can Why don't they talk to folks in Ohio and Illinois to see if they showed up there??

we can go on the Ohio River or Midwest forums and ask the DG gardeners out there

Albany, ME(Zone 4b)

Will do so right now.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

My AJs are just really huge that's why I think they are flopping....they did stand up straight when they were smaller

purple dome aster(only blues seem to be blooming in my blue/yellow and white garden)
berries on honeysuckle

is this a hyacinth bean?(I'll try and get a better pic of the flower...sun was setting when I took it last night)

Did you plant hyacinth beans?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Rosemaryk, Wha suggested that you might have the names of a few Pond Guys which I would love so I could pass them on to my BIL who has just bought a house with a lovely, but leaking koi pond with waterfalls. The house is in the Boston area, Jamacica Plain. I think he will want whoever repairs it to maintain it after it is fixed. I know he just hired a landscaper to tale care of the gardens as well as to replace many boring shrubs with Japanese maples and dwarf conifers. There is not one blade of grass on the property! No mowing, my dream garden, plus there is giant solarium with a indoor lap pool with big raised beds all around it that is a lush indoor jungle. He grows orchids so he is beyond excited about that space. But the leaking koi pond is a real problem. Help! Just d-mail me with any names of reliable Pond people. Thanks, patti

Weird, Jen!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes, very!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Jen, what is going on in your garden?! Volunteer beans, daylilies acting like spider plants, what's next?! Too, too funny!

Do you know the ID of the daylily?

Does Ripley know about this?

Rofl...

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't know it's sooooo weird...I think the hurricane just screwed everything up

That phenomenon is happening on a few of the Purple D'Oro and I think some are Open My Eyes

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Isn't the new growth on the daylily called a scape? I've read about it before, but since I don't care for daylilies, I haven't experienced, and may not be remembering correctly.
Hyacinth bean has purple flowers and shiny plump purple pods, The beans inside are a pretty black with a white eye.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

A scape is a flower stalk. I've never seen a Daylily grow a new fan like that. Very strange!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have seen new plants on DL bloom stalks. They can be used to propagate new plants. They are called Proliferations and can be used to make new plants

That's the word I wanted!!

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Fascinating!

hi debbi!

Hi Jo

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks for jumping in with proliferation, for the life of me, I couldn't remember what it is called. It's not an uncommon thing for those that have a lot of daylillies.

Thomaston, CT

When the church's Youth Group came in August, I asked one of the adults to dig out all of my double orange DLs.....he did a great job, but......they are all back!!! One little piece left, & up they sprout......I will try to pry a few more out......

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Jo, thank you so much for that info! I thought something was wrong with them...... whew

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Gee, Patti, I will think about some names. We delayed our waterfall project this year, but I can try to scare up a few of the names I have collected once I find my stash of these things ( I am just returning home from a work trip). I tend to think I'm the one who needs the help with this kind of project.

We have to visit some work by the guy my husband wants to hire before I send him as a reference and I don't know if he travels to JP. We're motivated by desire to not pay much and you do get what you pay for. I doubt I can get my info together right away if that matters.

NE nursery in Bedford is one of the places that does tons of projects. They didn't ever send us their quote. Must've felt we were too small potatoes for them. I had the suggestion of Zen gardens, and their web site is gorgeous. Beyond that I can't recall yet.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, my BIL tracked down someone a couple of days ago through a neighbor. He actually came immediately and started by doing a good survey of their current set up. They are quite happy with him so far. I will keep tabs on his progress and expertise and what he charges. They have some lovely big koi that they don't want to loose. He also wanted to meet with the landscaper which I thought was a good sign. He wanted to have everyone involved on the same page. Hopeful sign.

I went to see Wha's garden the other day. Amazing growth and some really stunning new rock features. I saw so many maples that I want that I may have to come out of retirement to afford them. Or perhaps I will just make an annual pilgrimage to Wha's and not buy any of them. Cheaper to just drool at his! Patti

Window shopping is GOOD!!! But, if wha finds some holes dug he will know where to find you. Heehee

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

That's funny. Did I have a dream or is it true that Bill is going to have an RU again :?

Glad I'm off the hook about finding the pond guy. I asked my dental hygienist about it today since she talks to all the clients and likes gardening.

Here there are some giant reblooms on immortality iris but the stalks are falling down from neglect :(

However, the plants on our sand trap hill are starting to look happier now that there's more good dirt going in and they have more company :) Just added Bartered Bride Eupatorium (grows to 8 feet tall), Lobelia Monet's Moment, three Pucker Up dwarf redtwig dogwoods and three midnight fire dwarf dogwoods. The dwarf Russian sage, tupelo tree and other fragrant plants went in before. It's a matter of getting outside for the one to two hours before sundown.

Bill's Jms are awesome......
