1. I'm hoping someone here can help me. I want to propagate some Clem's and hardy Hibs. On Utube they showed step by step rooting with different mediums and one was with sphagnum moss. That really appealed to me but I've not seen any sold in larger quantities . I don't need a whole lot but there isn't enough in those little bags for what I want.
Questions number 2 and 3 are regarding klonex , I purchased a bottle at a hydroponics store along with some clay marbles. My question is does this stuff expire, and have any of you had good/bad results?
Thank you guys, ill be trying a few cuttings tonight using soilless mix by jiffy until I find some sphagnum moss.
A.
Where in US is Sphagnum moss sold/Klonex questions
Us producers of sphagnum moss I don't know about , garden or hardware center should have it if available ..
Those cloning powders and gels usually list a 1yr. shelf life .. some last longer though .
Root tone is all have used in years , these days vitamins or willow water is what I have been using ..
Antoinette, Let me know how your rooting goes. Some dogs got into one of the beds in front of my house 2 nights ago and destroyed 9 of my Hardys they had just started blooming about 4 or 5 days ago. They just pulled up and chew up the plants. I got several branches cut and now have them soaking in water I am praying they will root. Stay cool and if it does rain at your house send some my way. James
Hey guys, how have you been?
Juhur7' thanks, I will go shock out those hardware stores, there is one here called tractor supply that Carries some garden supplies,
Txtea, it rained very little here, it doesn't cross the hwy at all.. Just enough to stain my car windows. My hardies are just starting to bloom here. They sell a sample pack of klonex at the hydroponics stores, I got mine in Las Cruces. I'm going to try confederate rise hib and some other plants. I really think you guys need to see this video, but I don't know how to link with mi iPad. I only know how to forward stuff. Boy do I sound dumb!
Old Yella and I think kopper king
Now I cannot find the video, but he was using three methods, One with sphagnum moss, one with soilless mix, and one with perlite, and also medium cuttings, small cuttings, then the throwaway cuttings. It was really simple and he showed how to scrape the ends for better rooting. Ill see what I find or if I ever find it again.
Txtea, send me your email and I can send you a link, it could help with those Hibs you have in water.
I found a different Utube video.
Juhur7'. Look at the maximilliani you sent me last year! Over 10 feet tall.. I love it. I even divided it a lot, The het killed my other plants o I'm happy these survived, now this fall ill have to move them..
TxTea and Juhur7'. I GOT ROOTs on the confederate rosé cuttings, I started them the 26th of June. I've have not had luck with these in the fall. Here are the photos. Just clear water, diluted superthrive in a vase on the kitchen window sill. I'm going to pot these guys up in soil so the roots get strong for fall mailing.
The Blue River II cuttings have not shown rooting signs (nubbies)'yet..
Have you guys had any luck with your hardy Hibs? I went outside and took more cuttings.. Ack! My kitchen looks like a greenhouse about now.
PS.. Happy Fourth of July...
And I have not tried the clonex yet.
Gourd, your look fantastic. Have no luck with these in water with H2O2 or the ones in perlite, seems like they might not root.
Do you have superthrive, change the water every day. My hardies have not rooted yet either, we just need to give them more time.. Do not give up friend.
I do not do much with the Hibiscus , when a branch or two falls to the ground , I cover and root them .. (while their still attached to the plant ) My Maximilliani will do that also sometimes ,, '
That is a big plant !! yours looks to bloom larger than mine .. hotter weather ..lol
I staked the maxi with the six foot rebar we had. Or they would be folded over. I had planned to have them arched over a cattle panel. Maybe next year. I had a couple more mishaps with my foot this year. Still recuperating a little now. My Hibs are doing great, these are from this morning.
I may try to root some of these.
Pretty !!! those go real well with dinner (where I am) lol Mine are not blooming , cold year , end of July for mine ..
Thank you for the picture's .. !!!
A, I have had all my Lunas blooming, Fireball I am sure will be open in the AM, Have one I started two years ago from seed I got from Well Know co. they are blooming but not what they were sold as, but I must admit they have the most beautiful color and am very pleased with them " I hope to be able to get some seeds from them. If I do will save some for you. The seeds you sent me the largest one is also the Fireball it is almost 3 ft. tall now. The ones I have from about three years ago are at least 5 ft. tall. The only one that I bought last year that did not come back was Kopper King don't know what happen to it. And as for the others started from seed this year between 1 ft. to 2 ft. tall now don't expect any of them to bloom. Yell at me when your Hardies get rooted.
Thanks Juhur7' mine have been blooming since early June, I lost some too. Need to order Fireball this year. Or sow some seeds if I left any for myself.
TxTea, you have a great collection going. I lost my fireball and a couple others, but have another five going. Moy Grande is about to bloom, cranberry crush bloomed twice but I didn't take photos, and I believe there are two others that have not bloomed. You are doing great with those seedlings. Pleasemsave me seeds and ill do the same. Ill try to root you some of the Hibs I have, wish me luck. Let me know if you need any confederate rosé cuttings, I'm rooting some for a friend and can put some in for you in the fall.
My fireball and big red look identical . I have meant to start more luna and big red , but have not got to that ,, lol going slow ...
Gourd your most welcome .. Eye candy flowers are great !!!!
Gourd, the ones in front of house would be looking much better if the people down the way would keep their dog in. But I have taken care of that with a electric dog fence. The owner of the dog just laughed when I brought it up to him, hey these things cost me money! I sure hope to get seeds of the unknown one it has such a beautiful color. Sorry I don't have pictures, last time I went to post some my computer crashed so I have become cautious of trying again. Did you ever check out the video on the web sit you e-mailed me? I watched it a couple of times, enjoyed but can't justify the amount of money he is requesting to become a member. Please get me one of the Confederate rose cuttings, I have read some of your past post about it and it must be a wonderful plant.
Now to change topics since we live in just about the same area, do you keep your brugs if full sun? I have three that are about 2.5 ft. tall now and some from seed that are about 10in. tall these seem like they are not growing at all. But the larger ones seem to be getting sun burnt, I have them in full sun and out sun has been bad the last 2 weeks.
I lost my Brugs that I left in the ground, the cuttings I took, almost all died indoors over winter. I think it is harder to root them in winter.. But to answer your question regarding full sun, no, t do provide shade gor them either by moving the pot around oe even using my shirt hung over the plant during the hottest part of the days when webgot over 100-105 last week was really bad. I have frosty pink and cypress garden in the ground in raised beds and they are growing inbetween other plants that shade them a little bit. So try to plant yours either in pots or near other plants for protection. New get very strong winds here too.
I got some cuttings from rhapsody on the brug forum and they are rooting under some sunflower plants right now. I plan to put one in the ground and the other two in small gallon pots so II can bring them indoors for the winter.
Have yours ever made it out doors? I think I may have watered them too much in winter trying to keep them moist.
And
, no, I never did find that video I saw, but I will try again. I learned how to link from someone on the Dave's Garden forum. So if I find it, I'll post it here too. You know I have two golden retrievers that weigh over a hundred pounds and sometimes they sit in the garden. I use those large tomatoe cages that are sold in colors and place them on my Hibs when they start coming out of the ground. Those dogs will not touch anything in those cages. The colored cages are a bit pricey for the large ones, but you can get the smaller ones and spray paint them green or any color you want. I just got a few of the silver looking ones and plan to paint them red. I use them for almost everything now. My dogs have not destroyed everything while looking for tomatoes. They love tomatoes as much as I do . You should try some of the cages and the neighbors dog will start to respect your plants.
If you build a path, they will use it. It is strange. But dogs and cats like psthways in which to walk. Make it uncomfortable for the dog to walk near the plants. And make yourself a pathway . You will see the difference. I know you shouldn't have to deal with their dog, but if you can't beat them, join them. Life becomes much easier believe me.
I found out with my two when they sat on several of my Turks cap plants. Now I have tomatoe cages everywhere. And even in pots now. I use them on my Brugs for support too.
Don't buy into that site I sent you. I just sent it because I thought he had some free rooting tips. I will look for that video or make up a shoe box with wet sphagnum moss in it, lay your cuttings in it the long way, and put a little bit more sphagnum over the cuttings, put lid on it , place in bright indirect light . Check every week I think. I didn't write down what he said to do after that. Mi thought I would go back and find it. The next box had soilless mix and he put the cuttings standing up and I think he used some kind of rooting gel or powder in this one. Then the third shoebox had sand I think. ,I will look for the video I promise.

Antoinette, the first Brugs I had did bloom and were covered with them. I also brought them in during the winter and made the mistake of also over watering. I hope these bloom and I will know better this time around not to keep as wet during the winter. I bought a Turks cap last year I thin it was a HD grew well and did bloom quite a lot last year, but never came back up this year. I am kind of think some of my losses this year was due to the white fly invasion I had last year. It was the worst I have ever seen. Praying I don't have to deal with them this year. Hopeful next year I will get those cages, its kind of late now. I have about 10 now on my tomatoes and should have thought of that. As for the dog I haven't seen him around here since I put up the dog wire.
My kids gave me one of those Harbor Freight greenhouses for my birthday and hope to have it up and going before out cold season gets here. It looks like it will be quite a bit of word to put it together.
You simply must get some superthrive and either vases or mason jars. I just checked the variegated Turks cap cuttings and one has a root, so does the perennial morning glory I. Indica (which would probably root in plain water anyway), but, I think that with the superthrive and keeping the water clean changing it daily and relatively Luke warm, they are getting the right combination for rooting. The hardy Hibs nothing yet, but, it hasn't even been two weeks. For the morning glory, it has only been since June 29 that I took a couple of tip cuttings just to see how long it would take to root these babies.
I hope this info helps someone out there too.
Antoinette
Antoinette, How have the rooting of the hibiscus come along? I have had no luck here. I did put superthrive and changed the water every other day. I also tried a couple in I can't remember the proper name clay pot with water in another full of perlite ect, they rotted right away. Hope you have had some luck.
James
They are still very healthy cuttings and they have not rooted yet. Keep changing the water. I know thar three years ago I rooted blue river II in water, but it took a very long time.
The confederate rosé rooted almost in one week in water . Ill keep you posted. Please do the same and let me know how it goes.
James, I think the blue river is starting to get the whit nubs that turn into roots. Ill know more in about a week or the next few days. It i didn't take many cuttings to experiment with, one 15 ",and two 9" cuttings.
How are your cuttings coming along?
Very nice!
Keep changing the water daily so they do no begin to rot . Once that stats, we may as well start over.. Did you notice I didn't say we may as well forget it.. Lol

Oh well gadgets going, going , going, goofy goofy , goofy ..
Antoinette, Looks like you are having all the luck. I have been changing the water every other day and adding superthrive, but have seen no change. Not giving up yet though. Looks like the Fireballs are through blooming and they did bloom very nice this year, hope they make some seeds. Plum Crazy is still blooming and the Luna series are going to give a second flush. How much rain have you gotten, the 50 miles below you I have believe it or not gotten 1.5 in. in the last 7 days.." Can't believe it myself after almost a year without hardly a trace." Please keep me informed on the progress. P S I read your adventure with the Clem. find how are they doing? James
Txtea, I planted all thos Clem's, I can't believe my luck..they have been turning brown on the old growth, which means I probably have totrim them down for the next flush .. Just keep on changing that water. My cuttings all mushroomed on the bottom of the stems and look strange. We have just last night gotten a good amount of rain. Previously only a few drops and lots of threats. We really needed this rain last night, our winds here are killer winds as far as my plants go.
I've got lots of vines in strategic places to counteract the wind.
Juhur, the sunflowers you sent are extremely tall, lol.. One was fallen over with the winds last night. I put additional eight foot rebar staked them back up. The ones I got from the plant exchange are inbetween the pecan orchard up front. They are about three feet tall, I think they may get taller next year. The flower is different than yours and the leaves are wider. Yours will have to be moved this fall, they are spreading faster than I can type.. I think.
There are a great many Sunflowers that's for sure. The one's I sent original came from a professional company seller . the others I have are tuberosa . it too runs around and plays tall and vigorous !!!
We talked about that , once in there(Helianthus max.) , they are a good strong Sunflower ..!!!
Hopefully they won't run you over running the way they do!!! I will get a pic when mine bloom
Here's the tuberosa started earlier this week .. About 71/2 ft.
Those you just posted look like the ones up front with the trees. Ill go out there when it cools some and take a photo.
Sweet peas , hyacinths , Mg's , great idea growing on those tall stalks , Makes the Sunflowers grow taller still .
Juhur, so how long has the air layered been going?
I've got some sunflowers the finches and other birds have planted in other beds, I just pulled out a whole row of hem to plant clematis.
About five or six weeks as of August 1 , Having trouble keeping them wet enough . especially since hornets like one of the vines . Only a few hours a day when I can check on them , difficulty , what else is new ,,
If not one bug another ,, lol
One Hornet ran me off less than an hour ago ..
That's funny, I've got a set of skunks living in the well house not too far from my back door. They run us off too, lol.. We have to figure out a plan to get them going on their way. I have been reading on how to get rid of the two.
