MidAt plant shopping June 2013 ...
Showing restraint, I have only bought 1 new plant, an Ascot Rainbow Euphorbia, $7 half gallon size. We've tried one of these twice before without success, maybe the third time is the charm. I want to get down to Manteo soon, to a very nice nursery there and the Elizabethan Gardens. The Liz gardens usually have a nice selection of natives and a few plants featured in their gardens. In recent years of drought their zeriscape looks a little worse for wear, this year things here are looking pretty good and I am hoping the gardens are more active.
Spill a little out at the Weeping Radish for me.
Cheers.
I checked out Susanna Farm Nursery today. Thanks for the tip, Paul! It's a beautiful nursery in northern Mont Co, and well worth the trip. They have a large selection of conifers and Japanese maples in a beautiful park-like setting. I had never even heard of it before Paul mentioned it.
I finally found a Sekkan Sugi, and also discovered a golden yew that's perfect for a shady spot in my small backyard.
Earlier this year I saw an unusual looking dogwood at Brookside. It was a Cornus alba, but I couldn't remember cultivar name. I finally found it today at Susanna's! It's called 'Hessei,' and going in the small rain garden.
Good report, ss, and great finds for you! Nice to get some of those 'bones' you've been searching for. Your yard seems to really be coming together. (You mentioned screening your kitchen window from the neighbors and I was going to suggest a hardy palm tree! lol, something different)
I bought a plant today, not because of the plant so much (echinacea 'Piccolino') but because of what was on it!

Oooh that's beautiful, SSG. I saw this dogwood at the National Arboretum and will get it one day...http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/170915/
Coleup, that moth is so trippy! I can see how you'd be mesmerized into buying that plant.
LOL judy I would have bought the moth too.
That's a gorgeous moth! It almost looks like an abstract painting of a moth. :)
Not your average everyday moth, that's for sure! :-)
Green Springs in Fairfax County has annual sales - always in the spring, but they have started doing a fall sale too. This year it is Oct 5 9:00am - 3:00pm. There are vendors that carry different things than what you can usually find in the local nurseries.
If anyone notices that Meadows Farms has dramatically cut their perennial prices -- last year they were at 75% off in December, but I don't know when they dropped to 75% off -- can you let me know?
if the do Chritstmas trees too, I bet they cut the prices around Thanksgiving, to clear them out. Lowes last year had about all the garden cleaned out before thanksigivng week last year .
Meadows Farms does sell Christmas trees -- I bet you are right on the timing. It is quite a hike for me to get to their stores, so I don't go often, but that sale last year was terrific.
I was at the Meadows Farms in Leesburg on Saturday - no drop off in prices yet.
Thanks, Aspenhill!
Thumbs up or thumbs down?
My local HD has 5-6 foot 'Forest Pansy' Red Bud trees on sale for $19.
Good tree? Good price?
I'd say great price but I'm not a fan of the Red Bud trees. I just don't like the leaf shape. If I'm planting a tree I want to enjoy it every month not just a 1/12th of the year. Trees take up a lot of real estate.
Thumbs up. I'd buy it. But alas, I have no spot for it.
I'm not familiar with Red Pansy, but I do have a Red Bud in my front yard--a quite mature one. It is pretty in the spring time but don't know that it's what I would have chosen for the rest of the year. It is *huge*. The neighbor had it trimmed a year ago or so so because it was poking into the electrical wires.
Oh, I love the heart-shaped leaves of redbuds, but they're still too big for my yard. I've been thinking about getting a weeping redbud, though.
I also think $19 is a great price. I like the leaf shape, too--roundish and pretty. It really is a space issue. I have a pink dogwood and the red bud in my front yard, and the pink dogwood seems a better size for my house, since the red bud has to be trimmed periodically to keep it out of the electrical wires. After trimming, it can be quite unattractive. But I'd say if you have room and a spot for it that's not under wires, go for it.
The price on the RB is good, we just added one at Holly's parents home last year.
Alas Paul, the Radish is no longer as we knew it. Reportedly after opening a couple of satellites one of which one was in Corolla, someone tried to say they had a monopoly, so they pulled out of the banks and moved inland to Grandy. They now operate a Farm Brewery and Farmer to Fork Butchery Market in Grandy with a pub. I'm sure it caused a bit of weeping and not from the radish. That establishment had to be a major source of revenue, and the powers to be reportedly drove them out.
I (heart ) redbuds,,lol.. just sentimental, they can be prone to canker and broken branches and ugly shape
But I wonder if a Forest Pansy would have less color in heavy shade?
Anything new in mums this year?
Ric,
Hmm, how interesting. Corolla is such a strange place. Oh well.
No Paul , they even closed their Bavarian place in Manteo. I really like the atmosphere there, it prepared me for my trip to Austria a few years back.
Oh no how sad. Manteo too!!! It was such a great little place, that is very disappointing.
Behnke's is having their annual "50% off one item" sale this weekend! You have to be a garden member and use this coupon: http://behnkes.com/website/images/stories/weekly/Coupon_1item-900.jpg
I'm seriously considering buying a Rising Sun redbud.
Shopping? Not much! Too late in the season!
I did pick up a "Happy Birthday" red Sedum at Lowes on clearance. $2.
Pretty sad shape--but who cares about the tops anyway this time of year?
I discovered a nursery called Seasons in Gaithersburg near where my daughter has volleyball. They were having a sale and I picked up a heuchera Electric Lime. It is really lovely--so bright.
I believe I got one of those last year from the bargain table at Lowes in NC.
I like that it is so bright, and the red veins against the bright yellow-green is really nice. So many of my heuchera, although they are pretty, are not vibrant in color, whereas this one is really vibrant.
This is the best time to shop if you're a bargain hunter!
I'm looking for a few more trees, but they need grow tall and narrow, and also tolerate wet clay. I'm hoping to find good bargains at Behnke's and Meadow's in the next few weeks.
I'm biding my time for the major markdowns. If you spot any, please give me a shout-out. The stores don't advertise those as much as they do the mid-season ones. As I said before, I got some fantastic plants at Meadows Farms' 75% off sale, in November or maybe even December. I had gone to buy mulch for my awful front hill project.... and what do you know, all their perennials were 75% off....
I swear, no shopping for me till I get to Florida, or South Carolina or North Carolina or the Virginia Arboretum on the way home. The annual fall sale is usually the weekend of the 12th of Oct. I'm wondering if RCN will be there?
Local HD has gal. Pampas grass and Japanese Silver Grass variegatus on clearance for $2.
Today HD had Native shrubs on display @ $14.98 in3 gal size
Fothergilla
Itea 'Henry Garnet'
Clethra
Black and Red Chokecherry
Elderberry,
Beautyberry
Hey Ric. don't forget that I picked up those 'Redstone Falls' heucherella for you!
And if you see RCN tell her a big hello!
Judy, I'm planning to see you before 11/11. I do remember!! Looking forward to seeing you.
Catmint, I planted Electric Lime in 6-7 hours of sun by mistake, and it got burned very badly. I'm about to move it to nearly full shade. It's very bright green in the summer and takes on a reddish shade with red veins in the winter. It's a fun one!
I just picked up Green Spice. So hard to walk away from a display full of heucheras.
ssgardner, I ordered a number of dwarf heucheras and hostas for Holly this spring, and she put them in containers, where they did well, and she loved them. When I'm shopping I keep an eye open for new or unusual heucheras and hostas. But beware of hosta virus.
