I did not know BOP took 5 years to bloom. All the ones around here bloom the majority of the summer. Oh my goodness, I will old by the time they bloom. How do you know they take 5 years to bloom? I guess I will have to Goggle that.
Just until recently we needed to cars and Vern is a nut about his car. He checks it every time you drive it to see if there are any new scratches. Pretty soon he will no longer be able to drive and then we will only need one car. We only need one now, but I have not be able to convince him of that one yet.
Plant Propagation -Part 2 -The Basics
Let me know what you found out about BOPs. Last year I think it was, I sent JB a white one from Logges for something. Returning a favor I think. But, I am not sure how old it was when I got it, and don't know if it has bloomed or not. She said it was getting new leaves last I heard from her.
They may not take that long there. That is why I asked you. Yes, I would think that by the time they are old enough to bloom that they would bloom all summer there. BTW, my Oleander is still blooming. A pretty peach color now. In the house it blooms white. Not enough light, or the right kind of light maybe, in here. But, it sure likes it out there. I have it sitting on the side of the pond alongside the pump and it gets full sun the hottest part of the day, so it seems to agree with it.
Yes, oleanders love heat and water. They do not like freezing cold. If you rim it after it has bloomed it will keep on blooming. I cut mine way back at the end of the season, mid way through winter. I will take a photo of a before and after when I do it.
JU, I bet those animals at the cabin are all doing just fine. Probably better than we are.
Jen, I have never seen a white BOP. I looked at Logge's site the other day. I had to slap myself several times to close out the screen and not order any plants.
Sharon, there are a couple of plants with the common name BOP. Are you referring to the Strelitzia? That's the one Jenn is referring to.
I can't think of the botanical name just now for the one that I will start from seed.
I lost my Pride of Barbados in th spring. Another with a big botanical name I have not mastered yet, but I hope to start another soon. It was beautiful, just foliage, would have bloomed this year.
Your Pride of Barbados is what we call Mexican Bird of Paradise. I can glean yellow or red ones all day long. They are in full bloom in the greenbelt. The seed pods are just starting to ripen. I picked three pod tonight of the yellow.
Hugs to you all, wherever you are. Sharon
Edited because my brain thought I was on a different thread.

I figured you knew the difference between the two. Common names can make things confusing. I was trying to get info on the Strelitzia as a very kind DG member sent me a giant pup from Texas. I found an old thread about the BOP and Jen and JB were already on there. The white BOP is striking and I think gets taller than the Orange.
I looked that up. I have a few neighbors that have this plant. No way would they ever get that large in Las Vegas. Unless inside a hotel after growing in their greenhouses.
Hello chatty propagators!! -:)
Just to respond to Sharon... hubby can fix anything.. he's a true wiz... but it's the proverbial 'carpenters kids have no shoes'...he is so busy with that Streamliner that I have to take the car to a shop. Thus... $$$... In fact....today I will drive over to the tire store to get the nail out of my tire... it's always something with this old jalopy!....speaking of tires... Jeanette... why must you buy 4 at once? That seems odd... what if you don't require 4 tires?
Off topic I know...
Very sad Amanda to hear that you lost your Pride of Barbados just before it bloomed... seems to me that happens so often... I will patiently watch something I am nurturing for a year... only to see the first bud - just ready to bloom.. broken off by the dogs or the kids.... boy that's frustrating! Must be that guy 'Murphy'! -:)
Anyway... I started this at 8am and walked away and here it is 9:30 and I am just finishing it... goodnight all! Nancy
Do you guys have Les Schwab tire stores there? What is nice about getting your tires from them is they repair free. However, the last one we got a nail in it was the side of the tire and that cannot be fixed to stay.
Gosh, I don't remember what the law is on those 4 tires Nancy. Could be a state law, but could be if they are all worn to a certain level, I just don't remember. But, like I said, you cannot buy a retread in this state, and doubt if you can in Ca. That is not necessarily a "used" tire. Just like, you cannot put studs in a tire that has been used. Only new.
I will have to ask Bob about the law and tires. He is watching a movie and can't get his attention. LOL
Jen ~ We have a Les Schwab. I will not trade there. They kicked out the formerly independant tire dealer that I had been trading for years. It was a hostile takeover. Now I go to Big O. They are independantly owned. Otherwise, I will trade at my (good) local mechanic. He checks everything and will fix minor things for free or put in oil for free. I was surprised at that. I did have to buy 4 tires, that last time, but I think it is because it is all wheel drive. The tires must match, or so they say. You have a Subaru, too, don't you?
Better hang on to him while he is there Evelyn. Never know what goes on behind the scenes and all of a sudden they sell out too. I love the Subarus, but it is not just Subarus. No, I don't have one any longer. I bought a VW Passat this last time, and love it. So far, I like it better than the Subarues except for the gas mileage. They are a heavy car just like the bigger cars and feel a lot more stable. Solid. You don't feel all the bumps or whatevers on the road. Feel like you are driving a race car and you are only going 40 miles an hour. Fun.
You could be right about the all wheel drive, but almost all cars are coming out with that now. I just cannot remember what the law is about that. But, years ago when they first came out with the front wheel drive, the District Director told me to put 2 studded tires on the gov't car 'cause he didn't say so, but I know it was because he took it skiing. Anyway, they wouldn't just put 2 on, it had to be 4. I thought it was a Federal law, but maybe not. And maybe there are a lot of variables.
How did we get on this anyway, what thread are we on? Isn't it propagation? Sorry you guys. Will try to be more careful. LOL
Jen ~ True, we should not be propagating tires...LOL!!
So, my Charles Grimaldi brug has not flowered at all. I planted it in the ground, like to told me to do. It gets enough water most of the time. It is in part sun. I will dig it up in the fall, and keep it in my window until spring again. It was too expensie to throw away. I will put some fertilizer in a couple of days. Any suggestions?
WELL WHY NOT !!!? The research with Sunflower x ficus to grow tire latex in Wyomng and Montana is being done..
See propagating tires ? What is the desert plant growing in Nevada that is the other being grown for Latex ?
Don't know JU. Might be something to put your money in. And garden! Quit growing all those tomatoes etc. and start on tires.
Have you fertilized it a lot all summer Evelyn? Brugs are humongous eaters. In a container I fertilized mine every week. Thought I told you all that? I sent both Dawn and Dave nice plants that were taken above the Y and Dawn's bloomed I think. Don't know about Dave's.
BTW, where did you get yours? They have to Y. Did yours? They only bloom above the Y. You do not pinch or cut the plant to make it branch (Y), it has to do it naturally. Have you read anything in the brug forum? There is a ton of information there if you can stay out of the cat fights. If you see one coming, just go to a different post.
Jen ~ It does have a "Y", but it is only growing from one stem and not the other. True, I have not fertilized. Maybe tonight, if I feel better. At least the deer have left that bed alone. I will check out the brug forum, and lurk awhile before posting a question.
Are you saying before asking me a question? I certainly didn't mean that. Just meant that they are more knowledgeable than myself. I don't mind at all. But, yes, they are very hungry plants. food and a lot of water. Both.
Forgot to say, that's ok if only one side of the Y grows. That one will bloom. Watch it very closely. Also, look real close because they are VERY susceptible to spider mites, which are very hard to see unless you look close. Very fine web, and tiny mites. They start in the new growth. Jen
Hi everyone,
I recently talked to my Monterrey Pine growing Mentor. She told me how to start the Leyland Cypress. So I thought I'd share with you all, since you've been so generous with your knowledge.
This should work for other plants with the same type of foilage as the Cypress. (Like, incense Cedar for instance.)
Take the fan like leaves (needles) and place in water till the roots form. Then plant them in dirt. Have patience, and water them regularly. I plan on using empty toilet paper rolls, because they are free, I like recycling, and they can be planted directly into the ground in the spring.
Sharon, good to see you and Evelyn here. I'd be happy to take a couple of those pink POB seeds off you. : - )
Seriously, I have been having a hard time with mine. I had to transplant them after the dogs almost killed them last summer. They are doing better in their new location, but no flowers this year. The same is true with my Birds of Paradise. Five years, huh? Well, it will be worth the wait. I do have pups forming at the bases of a couple of the white BOP. Go figure? What do I do with them? Can I cut them off and have a new plant?
The butterflys are happy in my yard and are returning to the passiflora. Does any one know how to take cuttings from passiflora? They are the host plant for Gulf and Variegated Frittilaries. Since DH said he'll build me a B.fly pavilion, I'd like to get more passiflora growing.
Once again, I want to thank you all for your help, and encouragement.

My cassia alata (golden candlestick) has an inflo. I took a photo today. This such a strange plant. If you stand near it and cast a shadow, the branch's leaves close. I finally took a photo today because it was in full leaf and it also had ants crawling all over it. When I was flicking off the ants, that is when I saw the inflo. I should say, I think it is a inflo.
I am going tomorrow and buy some boric acid. I understand it works well with ants. We have billions of ants because of the rain.
I have not planted the Pink BOP yet. I did plant three of the red. Al three germinated. One died right away. The other two are close to a month old. One just disappeared two days ago. Something ate it. I move a pot today and there were about 20 very large slugs. That is probably what ate it. Slug and snail bait tomorrow.
One raised bed on the East side has no slugs and lots of sun. Raised bed on the West side has many slugs and mostly shade.
I will keep you all posted. Sharon
Yes, borax mixed with powdered sugar. The ants love the sugar and get it on their feet and take it back to their nests. Kills the whole nest in short order. Get the Borax in the laundry section. I put it in all my laundry loads.
Slugs are a different thing. Salt, Diatomacious Earth, beer in a sunken can, lotsa things. things like that get the slugs. Besides slug bait that is. And ducks!! They love slugs. Get some ducks Sharon!! LOL.
Lavender , butterfly bush , clematis , cuttings , Testing some Clonex , seeing how I do with it . Hibiscus too .
I use Diatomacious Earth for everything . me , the plants , the cuttings , rarely the cat , the dog . whatever , the w on my board is wearing out.
I think you can even use the DE for flee control on your animals, but would check with a vet or someone first. Cuts their little hides up. No, I don't think it hurts the bigger animals.
I don't know if the Borax works on all ants Sharon. I have used it on those little tiny things that love the kitchens. All of a sudden about 4 years ago I had a line of the little buggers marching across my kitchen counter. I sprinkled some of it in their trail that night, and haven't seen one, not one, since. I was amazed. But, like I said, maybe doesn't work so well on the bigger ones.s Keep us posted on this. Would really like to know.
So JU, you use the Clonex and what do you do with the cuttings? Put them in the soil? Sounds like this is the first time you have used it?
Some in Sphagnum , some in DE pellets , Trying for a few mistimed by time of year or more difficult to do (root)
Well, I wait until spring. Anything I would start now would have to be taken care of over the winter and I am just not going to create more of those since I do not have any room for any more things in the house.
I have a beautiful Devil's Wing Begonia that I had in the house over the winter last year and it got leggy even tho it bloomed all winter. I cut it back and put it out side this spring, fertilized it and it is beautiful. The blooms that were pretty faded this winter are a gorgeous salmon, almost red blossoms now. Trying to decide whether to keep it over the winter again, or let it go.
It is going to be time to bring my house plants in soon. Think it is suppose to get pretty cold in another couple of weeks so I had better figure out where everything is going to go.
The nights have been so cold all summer that finally the hummingbirds gave up and headed south already. About a week ago. Also the bats left too. Which I am happy about, but not the hummers.
Bob just called and something had blocked the heater motor and when it kept running it burned it out. So, had to order a new one. Bob will have to take it back after he gets the motor in. What the heck, only 60 miles each way. Oh well, such is life in the rural parts. Could have been worse. Could have been to Spokane.
It appears my sister is going to probably have to have Chemo treatments so she is trying to decide where to go, Seattle or Phoenix. I would imagine she probably will opt for Phoenix since we are heading into winter, if it is for any length of time, and she has a house down there. Not in Phoenix, but near there. Those are 2 Cancer Centers. Seattle and Phoenix.
Gotta get busy, whoops, think I was going to do that a while ago.
passiflora starts well from root cuttings, but I haven't had luck with stem cuttings to start it.
Sooooo cute!
Yes, isn't it.
Huzzah! I'm sure you will watch over it to ensure it's survival, give it a blanket when the nights get too cold, etc.
Congratulations.
JU, what is that? The first couple pictures looked like Ajuga. I about crapped. That stuff will take over your whole yard. But then the other picture didn't.. What is it? I cannot believe you are starting plants from seed out in your yard now. Oh well, if we had your temps I might too.
I am going to gather the tomatoes and roast them pretty soon. But they have made such great salads that I might just hold off until they freeze.
Penstemon "Dark Towers" Those are from runners not seeds ...
Ok. I sure worried about you with ajuga. LOL, guess I don't need to worry about you. You know more about plants than I ever will.
Good and bad , or aggravating sometimes as it is hope creating and relaxing
"The Vegetation Thing " lol
Yeah, well it is a good ground cover but the bad thing is it covers too much of it and is a lot of work getting it out.
Nice, Ju. I got one in a swap this spring but it stayed in the rosette stage all summer. Hopeful that it will do jumping jacks next year. If so, I'll see if I can layer mine to get more plants. I'm not so good with cuttings it seems.
