Thanks -- I didn't spot it.
Neck of the Woods CHAT Summer 2013
That made me look to see if I got a response...and I did. Same as yours. I appreciate that they took responsibility and corrected it and apologized for it.
We now have a new Weather Watching thread over here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1318383/
Stay safe everyone!
Awaiting the storm--I was outside around 8AM re-locating some pots under cover.
Well--whatever it was here--(around 9AM) passed over rather quickly--20 minutes, maybe?
It got dark as night--the street lights came on--my house, inside, was pitch dark--
like the middle of the night. There were two strong Thunder claps.
Then the gusts and the driving rain came--from the West--but not as strong as the one we had last week.
And then..POOF! it was all over.....and the sun came out (still is).
I went to the Safeway store--to see what bargaains they had--and now am stuck frosting 2 whole chickens
(about 4+lbs ea.)--b/c they were $2.76 each in my favorite clearance bin.
They also had the 2lb. containers of strawberries for $2.94 with card. NOT on clearance--reg. sale.
Also picked up some tenders ans b-lees ch. breasts which i will pass to Aina and Mark when she gets off of work.
I always drive up to IKEA and wait for her to come out--and there is Mom with a goodie bag.
Been craving chicken--better get with it....
Now wondering what the afternoon storm will bring. Geesh! two in one day!!!!!!
G.
Gita, why do you frost chickens? LOL... I knew what you probably meant, though.
Heehee. I wondered the same thing, but figured it out.
Thought a bit of whipped cream would do wonders.......;o)
Big fingers---small keyboard==a lot of mis-hit letters....Happens all the time....
Glad i have spell check. G.
LOL, Gita!
darius---
I just want to say how nice it is to have you joining in here on the MA Forum.
I think I have "known" you (your name) ever since i joined DG--2003.
I always loved that picture of you by the mantle--looking in the mirror with a wine glass in your hand.
You looked like a fantabulous, refined lady.
Do you still have it???? Gita
Gita, I can't believe you still remember that picture! I still have the photo, but not the house. That was my 50th birthday party, and on the mantle were some of the 50 long-stemmed red roses Ron gave me. I was wearing an exotic tropical corsage that my "adopted" son gave me, and he sported a matching boutonniere.
I don't join in the MA forums much because my gardening zone is so different, but I spent many years in 'Bawlamer' and Annapolis so what y'all talk about is very familiar. Plus, I miss steamed crabs like crazy!
I'd almost make a special trip up there if I thought The Lexington Market was as good as it was in 1970.
Sweet!!
Hailing now. And POURING
Darius -- that's a wonderful photo! Did you get hit by this line of storms?
Yup, we got our share of that storm line... no major damage I can see except the sinkhole that opened up.
For those of us just checking in now, we have a Weather Watching thread over here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1318383/#new
darius--
The Lexington market still exists--and is quite famous. Still in the same location.
Especially the "Fraidly's" (sp) seafood stand--which is famous for it's crab cakes
and soft crab sandwiches. I hear all kinds of celebrities visit it....just for the food.
There are no more department Stores around there--do you remember them?
Hochchilds, Stewarts, Hutzlers, The may Co. (which became Hechts), and all that....
I have not been there in eons--probably since the early 60's, when I used to work almost downtown.
I am sure it has changed immensely--as has the area and as has Baltimore...
You could Google Lexington Market" and check it out.
Geez! There was not even the Inner Harbor nor any of the other big attractions we now have.
You would be blown away if you came back to Baltimore nowadays--it is now quite the Tourist City.
Maybe you should....
Ahhh, memories......Gita
Darius, gorgeous pic!
Lexington Market--er, I just don't know if I'd feel OK there anymore, or if they have nearly the great mix they used to. My dad used to take me there. Butcher shops had whole hog's heads on display. He bought calf brains to cook.
I worked Election Day last year, and one of the city gals said be sure to watch your purse around there.
I'm not sure how nice Inner Harbor is these days either. ..Sorry to be a downer on Bawlmer but I'm afraid it deserves it.
Whew, Lexington Market is in a rough area. I feel like it's gotten better in the last couple of years, although that may not be saying much since it was such a scary place 10 years ago. It doesn't feel touristy at all and still has that old Bawlmer vibe. I still wouldn't take any tourists there.
Inner Harbor is very touristy and feels as safe (or unsafe) as any other major city. They did a nice job with the aquarium renovation, and since the DC aquarium is closing, it's soon to be the only "National" aquarium.
The real surprise is Fell's Point, which has gone from homeless drug addicts to condos and hipsters.
The scary thing about Baltimore is that 3 blocks from that really cute neighborhood you hear gun shots pretty regularly. They still have a long way to go.
Glad that DC aquarium is closing that was an embarrassment to be called the National one, Baltimore is SO much better
Fed Hill (Federal Hill, near Inner Harbor_) seems to be quite the trendy area- according to my 25 yr old coworker who just rented a room in 'Fed Hill"
The election site I was in, had two precincts in the same school. You could see a big difference in the apparent income level of the two neighboring precincts voters.
Hey Darius, come on up and I'll treat to crabs at Cantlers!
Sure the Lex Market has changed but perhaps the more impactful change to good crab eatin has been to the quality of the Bay the blues live and grow in. In my opinion down from 70's level.
Sallyg, who carries a purse in any urban area anymore? Or, for that matter anywhere? Seems so 'dated' somehow. Over half of world population is urban now. And watch your iPhone, too.
Wish all of us had "Dads" to take us everywhere and create that sense of safety and feeling of OKness!
Edited to add that there are areas of Annapolis where I refused to deliver take out food
There is a difference in 'calculated risks' and being a 'sitting duck'. I prefer to travel in groups in day light and trust my 'spidey sense'. Like defensive driving, I do defensive living!

I have been on a work assignment to Baltimore for two and a half years now. I must admit with some embarrassment that I have not ventured outside the one square mile of the Inner Harbor area. There is much to learn about this city :-)
Here are some photos taken in the Inner Harbor area. Hope they bring back some memories for those of your who have known this city a lot longer than two and a half years :o).
The photos in this group were taken from my office on West Pratt St with the exception of the first one.
Oh, Donner----
Such beautiful photos of Baltimore! Better than any travel brochure.
Especially the bird's eye views of the Stadiums. May I copy those in my Documents to send them to
my daughter and her BF who were just here? He wanted so much to go to a ball game.
He wanted to see Oriole's Park. Your photos will give him a different view of them.
They did go--but left early as the O's were losing and they wanted to catch the
Mark Train back at a reasonable hour. I had to go pick then up at 10;30PM. Late for me!
I have not spent much time in the Inner Harbor in ages. Kind of miss it--it IS a beautiful part of our City.
I used to go there when they had all the Festivals there and I never felt afraid. Safety in numbers....
Besides--there are enough Police walking around there during the tourist season.
I am not, usually, afraid , BUT--Not sure i would want to walk around by myself there in off hours...
How sad that it has come to this...
coleup--WHEN and IF Darius comes this way--we should have a mini-party.
Gita
Donner and I spent a day at the harbor a year ago--when the Tall Ships were there...
here's some pictures of that day.
Pic. #4 is donner photographing the flags at the top of the masts.
Great photos, lots of memories! I don't remember the building around the Shot Tower, but I was always fascinated that they made cannon balls that way...
One of my favorite hangouts was Fell's Point. In fact, my old pick-up truck still sports a bumper sticker that says "Eat Bertha's Mussel's". In the 1970's, Greek ships docked in that area and I'd often go to a restaurant/bar to watch the sailors dance. That's back when John Waters had a sleazy storefront along the main drag in Fell's Point, and Barbara Mikulski walked the streets drumming up support to be elected to the state legislature representing the ethnic community around there.
They were just starting to renovate Fed Hill when I moved away.
Bertha's mussels are awesome! Seriously, they're the best mussels I've ever had. Highly recommended! Darius, wait til you see the changes in Fell's Point. I used to shop at the thrift stores there as a college student. How interesting that there used to be a Greek community there. Now there is a strong Mexican-American presence in the neighborhood, along with trendy shops. And Little Italy has seen a lot of development, too.
Federal Hill is so different now, with lots of cute little restaurants. There's even a Harris Teeter there.
Donner, those pics are fantastic!
ssgardener, I actually hate going back to places that hold a fond memory for me. They are always a disappointment.
I've had many a good meal in Little Italy's restaurants. My fav (forget the name) would fill an empty wine bottle with their yummy salad dressing for us to take home.
One of my 'special' places was Crisfield's off Georgia Ave, in Silver Spring. Best oyster stew (and Kaiser rolls) ever!
The pictures were mostly taken with my mobile phone. The only time I had a little camera with me was on the day out with Gita and decided to equip myself like a tourist :-). It is amazing how the quality of digital cameras has improved over the past decade.
A few people in my office live in the Federal Hill area. They like it very much. I should go check it out one of these days.
Gita, please feel free to use any photo that I have uploaded as long as DG doesn't have objections. Or I can give a copy of them when I see you next time. Funny that you have a photo of me taking photos. Here is the photo I took:
great pictures, Sally-d ! Interesting comments about my 'home' city, which I'm really not all that familiar with. Have never spent much time there.
Hampden is another yuppie area. We went for the Xmas lights and there were loads of families all over the streets, walking, trendy restaurants. But just start a block or two off in the wrong direction and it gets very quiet, any more blocks and you start to wonder...Cafe Hon is a restaurant there with the huge pink flamingo out front- food may or may not be good, there was a renovation by one of the restaurant rescue TV shows. Golden West restaurant seems very popular, has big beer assortmen,t and garlic french fries.
Gathered my first seeds today--from the Wood Hyacinths--aka "Spanish Bluebells".
IF you have these--just like that!..the seed pods are popping open.
Take a look at yours---or they will all drop down to the bed.
The seeds are good-sized, black, round balls...quite a few in each capsule.
Mine are mostly a mix of blue and white ones. Somehow, the pinks got "almost" lost.
There was a small clump---I marked it! Seeds not ready yet on that one.
Gita
I have one solid blue clump from you Gita. I took note of it this year and just planned to dig and thin them. Not saving seed.
I have more white ones than anybody could ever need.
Sally... if you pluck the seeds from your blue clump, you could scatter them among your white ones, maybe get a few more clumps here & there more easily than dividing & digging them around...
Sally---
That picture I postedabove is from 2006. I took pictures from these this spring--but did not note exactly where they were
(I keep a notebook--by dates) and did not feel like hunting for them.
Last year--I had dug up several areas of bulbs and sorted them out. Took a bunch Daff bulbs to the fall swap.
The Wood Hyacinth bulbs are round, white little balls. Easy to ID. Replanted them in any open spot i could find.
So--this spring--they came up in great form. Already--seem too many...
I will be digging up a couple clumps of Daffs. Too crowded--NO blooms....need the spot for other things...
One of them is a pretty Daff---blooms later and their leaves take FOREVER to die off...(see pic)
I have more of these around my KK Hibiscus bed...Will let those be for now--but digging those up (eventually)
will be tricky--as the KK's roots radiate away from the plant--like spokes on a bike wheel
.
This is what happens when I get desperate and just plant things anywhere i can find--with NO plan in mind.
Later--they are too much in the way of something else. I deal with this issue every year--everywhere...
Right now--I need to find a spot for the poor "Jack Frost" Brunnera I p/u at Lowes on clearance.
Decided on a spot--right in front of my Carpet Rose, to thee left--where on the right, is already Donner's Brunnera.
This will be a good spot! Early AM sun and then shade. BUT--will have to dig up a lg. clump of Stellas to do this.
A pattern seems to be forming here......right? ;o/
And--so goes my gardening when I get something new......I can only dig up so many things...
That is why my "wants" list is always so short....I REALLY have NO place to put anything!!!
This year--I had to work in the new DL and the Caladiums. A Spiderwort Susan brought me at work--(done!)
The "mystery? shrub (Mockorange), which found a home in the very corner of my "YUK" bed where i dug up
the old, split-stem, dead Butterfly Bush. (done!)
Etc...etc....Story of my life in my garden......G.
--OK--Here's the pretty daffs...Paul already asked for some of these.
--Same daffs in the KK Hibiscus bed
--Here's the Carpet Rose--that clump of Stellas will be dug up--and the "Jack Frost will be planted on the left.
Behind all this mess--you can also see the tall. red Hibiscus starting to grow. A LOT packed into this little corner bed..
--This is the corner of the "YUK" bed--where the Mockorange (out of sight) now lives. Right by the green fencing.
That is also where I had planted the Purple Loosestrife--and then pulled it up. Put a Purple Datura in its place...
Also--just planted the Spiderwort right behind the annuals in the front. (2 Lantanas) It will get some shade there...
Gita, everything looks wonderful -- what a backyard paradise !
Those pots of little zinnias in front of your hose & watering can in the first photo... are those from Joyanna's seeds? Just wondering if you started them early enough to be blooming already...
No, jill--
That is a HB if Zinnias I bought at HD on their BIG sale a couple weeks ago I got two. $4,88 each!
Got the carefree Coleus HB as well. Pretty!!! never seen any like that. All curly...called "Care Free"
Most of the Zinnias I grew and planted are giving up the ghost. I seeded so many--and planted most of them.
I think, like so many other things, the spring just dragged on and on--and I had all my seedlings
outside-through the hot and cold---hot and cold...
They looked OK--but now that I have planted them in my beds--they are dying off.
Also--I think, with all this rain, they are getting too much water and the Slugs are having a feast.
I am, actually, pulling most of them up, as it looks like there is NO hope of survival. The tops are dead.
Even in my sunny beds.....bummer!!!
Same thing with several of my cutting Coleus....Six month, keeping cuttings going, is just too long.
At least some of them look like they are recovering. I will have a LOT of Coleus in my garden this year!!
Need to scale down a bit with all this propagation. How is your garden doing?
I bet Joyanna had a blast at Disneyland......Never been there.....
Gita
Gita: Your garden is lovely!
Hi Darius!! nice to 'see' you. Hope all is well
nice gardens Gita. would you like to come to our place and clean things up? I've been yanking weeds and vines all morning... lol
wind--I have all those too--you just cannot see them from a distance....:o)
I mostly wanted you all to see how "structured" all my beds are....no free spaces to experiment.
Lots of pots and containers....
Love the shade in my back yard, though. it is 10* cooker when you round the corner.
My 2 trees work well for that--but I hate the roots in, and on, the ground.
Also--does this give you a perspective of WHY I call that corner bed my "YUK" bed?
How close to a 45yr. old Silver Maple can one get--and still grow?
Pretty much everything that is planted in it can, sort of, fend on its own.
I have great respect for those plants. Of course--I planted them all in there--so i KNOW!
Some more shots from a different perspective. Hope you feel as if you have now visited my
back yard. Of course--there are Three other sides yet.
1--Here is a side-view from my neighbor's side--looking west.
Good idea of the trees and the shade....
2--looking from the back neighbor's yard towards the back of my house.
This is a Red maple--aka Swamp Maple...(???) It is much daintier and better behaved---the roots still go everywhere...
3--Looking from my behind-me-neighbor's yard to mine--this is the BIG Silver maple.
Just on the other side of the split raail fence is my "YUK" bed...Both trees are so big that their leaf-canopies meet overhead.
AHHH--shade!!!
