Neck of the Woods CHAT Summer 2013
Like many of us since the swap, I have been busy planting and plant shopping and doing all those tasks my yard and garden requires. I've enjoyed the cooler weather as even a few days is a giant reprieve from the heat and humidity to come. Sweat equity in the garden is not my idea of fun!
It is very dry here. Have to water every day. Rain barrels are empty. No rain in forcast this week and temps in the 90s.
Must get car ac fixed.
Must get car with ac fixed.
Must move to cooler summer climate (3 feet of snow in upper NY state!???)
Of course, if I move North the likelihood of encountering bears in my bushes increases!
Diana/Wind tell us the latest. Stay safe http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2013/05/27/black-bear-spotted-in-mount-laurel-for-8th-time-in-a-week/

This is addressed mostly to "loves daylilies"....
I still have the D-Lilies you gave me in the bags, been keeping them watered/moist...
will these still bloom this year?
They were, mostly, for my daughter and she has not had time yet to come and get them.
Her husband is having surgery and she works full time....
Question--
Can I pot them up in lg. pots and let them live there for a while????
The leaves are yellowing a bit in the bags...as I would think is normal having been dug up.
Thanks, Gita
Gita: In case lovesdaylily doesn't see your post, I can tell you that daylilies are very tough. You can just "heel them in" sideways in a pile of dirt -- get their roots in dirt, and they'll be happy. Large pots would be terrific.
Omigosh Wind - a bear in your yard??? I did read it was spotted near the Kindercare Nursery around the corner. I sure hope they catch it. And to think I went out in the dark to take out the garbage! Wow, how scary! (I live only a few blocks away from Wind).
Lions, Tigers, and Bears, OH MY! I enjoy seeing them , from a distance. Once when we were at my FIL's camp upstate we had one want to join our cook out. It was fairly determined, but the boys and I made enough of a rukus to scare it off, another time I was in the outhouse when one wandered in to check out the burn pile. Needless to say I was glad to have a few old magizines to read till it ambled off. Another time while backpacking with Jamie's Boy Scout troop we encountered a large sow and were really careful to stay togeather and be sure not to block her path in case she had cubs. Well she did (3 of them), and we didn't. We were careful not to have any food, even bath soap, in our tents at night, that was all high on a rope over a limb outside of camp. I for one didn't want to share my pup tent witha 400# bear.
We,ve had nice soft rain most of the morning, and needed it, eventhough we had a lot of overcast and drippy days last week there was almost no accumulation.
I love those shoes....reminds me of the old keds I have and can not find another pair like them.
Mt. Lauel has a bear? I thought they caught it....hope it stays south and does not decide to take 537 to my house. I am outside all the time and do not run very fast anymore. Of course that could be an incentive to move my old butt faster. I would no doubt just stand there and wet myself. Sorry, but at my age you know what goes first. The bladder darn it.
I guess I have been out of style most of the winter. I wear white sneakers to garden much of the time because they are good for my back. I do have black, brown and blue Easy Spirit that I live in most of the other days. Shoes are my weakness and I have too many pair that I never touch. Boots, mostly paddock, Western, I used to wear all the time on the farm. I also have a few nasty bunions that make life annoying in certain shoes. But, I love my shoes and I am going to keep looking for that pair of white that look like the old fashion keds. Gardening is hard on shoes. LOL . Have a wonderful day everyone and keep those feet covered. I love to go barefoot but do not do it too much anymore, like many things I like at my age,............blah blah blah. Have a good day. JB I am rambling, sorry.
JB I love your rambling! And white shoes. Good lucj on your quest. Always avoid bears.
You be safe, too, coleuslover! It took about two weeks for bear to be relocated from neighborhood DD lives in in Vermont. People kept thinking it was just a BIG dog. It wasn't until people started talking to each other about neighborhood happenings that any of them suspected it was a bear. Another reason for neighbors to chat!
Not sure when bears are most active, but have seen two asleep in trees! Never been close enough to one to identify it by its breathing! Ric, do you remember the articles you read? I've heard of bears tipping outhouses and porta potties. Yikes.
It is Nutsfordaylilies (Karen) who loves daylilies. And, yes Gita, they would be fine in pots until your daughter can plant them. I chuckle everytime I see one of my plants from Karen with the orange surveyors tape. Really stands out.
Pixie, have you planted your pond with those iris yet? Pictures please. How big is your pond? Did you get snow up your way?
Getting a little bit of much needed rain here with off and on showers. Nothing like the 10 inches in 2 hours Texas got. Yes, Ric no accumulation here to speak of.
Does anyone know anything about Golden Vicary and how you propagate it?
It is probably not much different than an azalea, semi-soft cuttings. It is pretty.
JB, those white keds should be find-able, with "retro" and "vintage" in style...
http://www.shoebuy.com/keds-champion-solid-cvo/515180/1085856?cm_mmc=googleproductads_pla-_-none-_-none-_-{keyword}
olive, not white, but they might get them in. haven't ordered from them but have heard good things, and I know shipping & returns are free
hmm..
size 7 at etsy... http://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/123867648/90s-vintage-keds-white-canvas-sneakers?ref=br_feed_14&br_feed_tlp=women
the official keds site has white "original champion" ones in every size & width, "just" $40 with free shipping.
of course, the prices seem ridiculous for those of us who remember these as $5 shoes!
JB--
If you just mean a "Keds look-like" shoes--there are all kinds of :knockoffs".
Thry payless Shoes--marshalls--TJ max---and those places.
And--don't forget Thrift Shops....my fave places to buy most apparel.
$40 for a pair of keds???? Never in my book!!!! But--I am the frugal type...
Gita
Coleup -- thanks for the offer to pick up some plants for me at HD -- Your HD does much better than mine at discounting! But I need to decline your kind offer to pick up some plants for me -- I am so behind at planting what I have!
Happy---
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger......many of us are behind. I know I am....
Blame it on the rain and the changing weather....Holiday weekend, etc...
G.
I'm also at the worst point of our awful front hill work. Almost all the perennials I planted last fall did fine -- but a hefty percentage of the ornamental grasses did not. And because the plants were small, there was plenty of room for weeds. I hope in a few years the plants will become robust, but for now the weeding is a huge task.
I am talking about the slip on kind, not the tie. The ones I have now are from Cabin Creek and they are about shot so I have been looking around. They are slip ons and big foot here takes a 8 1/2 M. It is like bra's you get one you like, and they stop making it. Oh well. I will keep looking. Gita, the price of shoes, especially if you have bunions and arthritis like I have that makes my toes all crooked, is much more than they used to be when I had feet I could easily find shoes with the proper support and size. It is like a national war debt buying shoes for me now. I usually wait for a sale if possible.
JB, Amazon has something that you might like.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017H5D66/ref=asc_df_B0017H5D662530865?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=pg-294-95-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395097&creativeASIN=B0017H5D66
Yep, and keeping feet comfy is worth the extra cost, if that's what it takes. I learned a couple of years ago that, at least for me, the "knock off" version of Crocs aren't as all-day comfortable as the real thing (which I pretty much live in when I'm not barefoot!).
Gita, Just saw on the news big mess at White Marsh. Are you ok?
coleus lover, it looks like we have a bear in the neighborhood for as long as he wants to stay. The township does not plan to move him north. We named him Boo. Boo was last seen at Strawbridge lake this morning, just across rt 38. Hopefully he doesn't cause a car accident. Rt 38 is so busy!! The protocol is to coexist w/the bear. I have no problem w/that, it just comes as a surreal and total shock that we actually have a bear!! Online posts I've read are full of "...kill it..." kind of posts, so I fear for his safety. People around here have no clue how to coexist w/a bear. He is attracting so many people who want to see it. Crowds are forming wherever he goes. Poor guy...
Found the link, I was about to buy the canvas one when I noticed they had it in leather for $37.71 and I have Prime Amazon which it was eligible and so shipping was $0. Yahoo. Thank you so much. I never thought of looking on Amazon. I don't know why not, I even by my Evelyn and Crabtree stuff there sometimes. I am so happy. Thanks so much for your help Rose. Love ya.
Now I can wear my old ones outside and use the new ones for inside. When I have a pair I really like I never wear them on the farm outside. It just ruins them big time. They are my go to town shoes. LOL I used to be a flip flop kid but with the arthritis I have to have some sort of arch support and these have about as little as I can handle. Even barefoot too long bothers me. It is H getting old.
Wind, I can not imagine people in Mt. Laurel agreeing to live with a bear. Now when I go to the doctor on Rt. 38 do I need to look out for the bear? Virtua Family Practice? Where from there is the bear? What about kids out playing? Dogs and cats, etc. I am not sure I agree with cohabiting with a bear if I have something the bear wants to eat. They can walk in your house if they feel like it. Oh my God. What next. Only in NJ I swear. LOL...I hope he does not decide to wonder East.
Goodness gracious, I love animals, but I don't think I could live with a bear in my town. I actually know that part of NJ very well, and can't imagine a bear taking residence there! I would be all for tranquilizing it and moving it to a more secluded area.
My friend lives near the intersection of Ark Road and Hainesport Mt. Laurel Road not too far from the intersection of 38 and 295. I really like that area I can see why the Bears do too. Ha. I hope Billy the Bear can make it to wherever he is going, I doubt he will find a mate there.
If he is looking for a mate in Mt. Laurel he is in for a real disappointment. Rt. 38 is no place for mating? Deadly for sure. Is Larchmont near Strawbridge Lake? Boo will be a Boo Hoo if he gets hit by a car.
Big train wreck in White Marsh that is Gita's area. Hope we hear from her soon.
Knowing her she is out there waiting to see if there were any plants to recover from the wreckage................oops she will kill me for saying that. Love you Gita Girl but I know how you collect plants. .
Seriously, I do not think any homes are in trouble..... I am waiting to see the news again. Now that I know she is in that area I will pay attention to CNN.
Me too. Chime in, Gita!
Where is she? Darn it Gita, come on talk to us.
I bet traffic is at a complete standstill in the wide area of the wreck. Does anyone have Gita's cell #?
CNN just had picture of the explosion. Wow, a truck hit the train or the train hit the truck, either way, what an explosion that was. I bet that rocked the area like an earthquake. They are going to talk more about it soon. Hope she has no physical damage to the house if it was that close to her.
Thanks for your concern----All is well here....
It is not in White Marsh--it is in Rosedale--which is a good 8 miles or more south--towards the City.
My neck of the woods was not affected--but if people had to drive South on rt. #40 (Pulaski Hwy.)
they would have encountered all kinds of road closures...
They said they closed rt. #40 from #295 (the "old tunnel" route) north to #695 (our Beltway).
I don't think I-95 was affected--just backed up from Kingdom Come as all traffic was being detoured...
You can go to WBAL.com and read all the news stories.
WBAL is the biggest news radio station in Baltimore....
Let me see if I can get you a link....not much on there---
http://www.wbal.com/article/100135/21/template-story/See-Videos-Photos-Cargo-Train-Derailment-In-Rosedale-Area-Explosion-Reported
This is from another station--WJZTV,com. it is a slide show with ads popping up between each picture.
http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/photo-galleries/2013/05/28/derailed-cargo-train-in-east-baltimore-county-causes-loud-explosion/
Since there was no time for the media to prepare for videos--I think all the pictures are from passers by and locals
sent to the station from their phones.
The evening News will probably have the best coverage....
Only the driver of the truck was seriously injured.
Seems this is a road crossing train tracks, which had NO warning signals or the gate closures at all.
Drivers would just have to look both ways before crossing the tracks. I guess the dump truck driver did not..
He is in serious, but stable condition in Shock Trauma.
All is well here---Thanks, Gita
Thank you Sweet lady, now I can go to bed knowing you are o.k. Love and Hugs.
That's a relief -- that you (Gita) are ok. I hate driving over train tracks.
Thanks for checking in Gita. Glad it wasn't your area. They reported White Marsh area so I was worried.
glad you're okay Gita! I planted some of your 4'oclocks; thank you!! I wish I got all planted since they're calling for serious heat the next few days... Harry is going to water for me so nothing dyes until I can get back to planting on Friday
Holly--
Sometimes, in the still of the night, when I am trying to go to sleep--I hear the train whistle and the
chugga-chugga-chugga of the wheels on the tracks. it is a very calming sound.....very melancholy...
Now I know from where the whistle is coming from. Even if it is several miles away--as the crow flies.
They said this morning, on the radio, that because there is no more than a stop sign at this crossing,
the train blows it's warning whistles when approaching the cross-over.
The truck may have tried to out-run the train....NOT a great idea!
Not good enough--in my opinion. It should have all the bells and whistles and the 'arm" that comes down
closing the road off when a train is approaching. Maybe this accident will rattle some cages....
They also said the driver of the truck was a retired fireman and owned his own waste-disposal business.
Also--that by the time the rescuers got to the overturned, destroyed truck, he had already crawled out of it himself.
Gita
Gita, yes you can put up those daylilies in large pots. I do that when I don't have time to plant them or of I don't have a spot prepared. That happens to me a lot. Lol!
Coleup, I planned that Peach Crisp heuchera that I got from you. It's looking good. Been getting a lot done. I wanted to past a pic, but my phone isn't letting me.
Karen
nuts---Thanks!
Another question---are they expected to bloom this year--if they are in pots?
or--only next year?
I have no place in y beds to plant them--these were for my daughter...
Her husband is in the hospital with back surgery and shw works FT.
I just want to tide the Lilies over the best i can until we can plant them.
Thanks again--Gita
Gita: Around here the peak daylily bloom is about July 4, with blooms starting in early June and continuing for 6 weeks or so. The ones you got from nuts might put out a few blooms, but probably not a big show this year -- there just isn't time for them to "get it together" so soon after being divided..
