End of May blooms
Pretty pics!
I love the rich color of the Spidewort flower in the 4th photo. No, I am not asking for a division. Haha!
The pink rose is impressive in person. The size of the flower is unbelievable.
I know better than to randomly offer Spiderwort--and everybody else knows if they want, just say so.LOL I'll probably come to hate it ain about two more years. RIght now it helps fight the Yellow Archangel lamiastrum.
Sally, I love the spiderwort and have been lucky to have been gifted some by you a few times. I will glady take any you are dividing or need to get rid of if they start taking over your yard - hands up for me, me, me LOL. I don't have any pink ones yet, so that would be my first choice for whenever... The other day when it was cloudy, the color of the purple ones sure did pop. My shade garden always has something blooming, but it is like one or two things at any given time and the plants that are blooming are spread so far apart, it is of little impact. I really, really need to work on that...
Oh man. I have spiderwort as well. They spread like gangbusters. Last year I tried to cut them back to get them to rebloom, I was unsuccessful. Same thing with the columbine.
I'll take some pictures of mine at some point. I just got a little clump of sweet Kate at the swap. I think it was from donner.
funny, they don't spread at all here. I've never seen a double one before
I love 'Sweet Kate'
Terri, that pot was with other pots all together in a corner of the the front of our garage, morning sun only
Paul, the 'sweet kate' has been in my garden for about 3 - 4 years now. The clump got bigger over time, but it didn't seem to spread very much.
aspenhill, I will remember you at dividing time. Would it be evil of me to give you the small clump of double one? I don't like it as much because I think the stamens are what makes them POP, and that muddles it.
; ^)
Spiderwort seems to get yucky over summer but I think I remember new foliage in fall. Nope, no reblooming. and same for columbine. Some plants you just have to accept that they give it their ALL at a cetain time, and then have to regroup.
Agree, Sweet Kate takes a while to fill out- and does not seem to spread . Shorter in stature than my others; the pink is my tallest.
I have a white one with blue fuzz and I think a white one with yellow fuzz. Excuse the layman's terms.
Similar to this one http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vJJWmzKz0Gw/S-erfPrkcLI/AAAAAAAAIzc/OMEqeLix7zc/s1600/Bilberry+Ice+Trandescantia+Spiderwort.jpg
I imagine it was an offspring of the white and blue in the garden. They pop up everywhere.
That white one is very interesting, Paul.
I bought the 'sweet kate' from the shady plant section at Merryfield, and planted it in a very shady location. It flopped badly. I moved it to a slightly sunnier location last year. So far it is still standing :o). We will see if it is on the ground again later when it is taller.
Gita; That striped iris is gorgeous.
Our Clematis so far:
1 - C. 'Ramona' according to tag, but instead of "late-blooming", it's our first bloomer. Also in photo; Lower left corner - Scotch Broom - Cytisus scoparius 'Burkwoodii', bottom center - Viola cornuta 'Skippy XL Plum-Gold', middle left (white) Pyracantha, and pink noid Azalea in background.
2 - C. 'Marmori'
3 - C. 'Josephine'
4 - C. noid white
GORGEOUS...I have to get more Clems
wow David- two thumbs up
your Iris -2- compare to 'Wabash'
your Siberian- shared with me, no ID
crestata- that also has the short foliage ? I think like one I got from aspenhill
would releive either you or Paul of overages on the blue centered Spiderwort, sometime..
bradburiana- hm mine has lost the dark color= too shady I suspect, but still fascinating bloom
Love the digitalis and the thalictrum. My thalictrum is more compact, maybe mine gets more sun? Love that guy, thanks again for the ID.
Looking good Dave!
Paul - Our Thalictrum aquilegafolium is in high shade. Don't think it gets any direct sun once the trees leaf out and grows about 5 feet tall in bloom.
Sally - Our M. bradburiana receives direct sun from mid-morning till around noon, otherwise, high shade. Love its glossy, deep green foliage as well as the lovely, speckled blooms. All Iris cristata has very short foliage, under 6 inches. Have multiple clumps of both Siberian and Crested Iris so I can't vouch for the provenance of any. Don't recall having shared any Siberian.
oooo I like that one too!
Paul--
You may want to stake those very tall Foxgloves...with these high winds--they can just break in half.
I have seen it happen...
Today--I staked all my tall stemmed Iris--when i found one almost broken in half,,
I had a picture of Olga's stately, tall Foxgloves all broken in half....I think we had a storm that year.
can't find the picture.....looked at every year's May. G.
I found one down this morning, too. Not broken just down.
excuse me David, I meant that I may have shared those Siberians with YOU...or they are a common type coincidental.. Mine came from my first home and were in the ground since the mid 60s as far as I can remember.
Gorgeous foxgloves Paul. Mine last year were like that but this year much shorter, in a different spot.
I got some of them from you Sally a few years ago. So pretty.
A few more current flowers;
1 - Prolific blooming Chinese Indigo, Indigofera kirilowii. Got an offset from Aspenhill last summer and have a big potful of plant and flowers this spring - Thanks Terri!
2 - Salvia officinalis 'Extracta', a culinary Sage.
3- Allium schubertii, our favorite Allium. The huge flower head is 18-20 inches in diameter.
4 - noid Rhododendron, one of our favorites.
5- noid Penstemon. Appeared in the yard years ago. Just coming into bloom.
Sally, I took some of the siberian iris I got from you to the swap and gave them to Pixie who I hear is planting them around her pond up there in Maine! And the beat goes on...
Love schubertii. It only lasted one or two years here. Do you plant new bulbs yearly or do they come back foryou?
Now that you mentioned it, more than half did not come back this year. Guess this will be the last unless we replant this fall. :-(
They really made a statement. I loved the airy satellite-looking shape to them.
What a windy day!! Many of my irises are now flopping all over the place :o(. I got home and managed to take some photos.
Very windy here today but I managed to take some shots of some of the blooms. If some look distorted, it is the wind. Sorry. I can barely stand up with some of these gusts and I wanted you to see the beauty before they are ruined today.
You all have such beautiful things I want to tell you how much I enjoy looking at them. I wish I had one of each. Would that not be a beautiful garden?
Here we go for our walk around the farm in the wind.
Iris first
donner--
I love the pink Iris--your 3rd picture...
JB--No need to feel left out--your Irises are very pretty--and unique as well...
Yes! it IS windy--getting tired of this weather---thought I would get a few things planted...
Still going outside--hooded sweatshirt on.... G.
