KendraSue's Poetry Contest.....or, Some Right Perty Words, Some Even Rhyme!

Easton, MD(Zone 5a)

Here's the deal. Come up with an original poem of no more than 200 words. Poems will be judged on humor, originality, clever misuse of the english language, and the ability to kindly poke fun at another DG member. The contest will end on November 30. We're working on a prize for the best poem and will let you know what that is as soon as I figure that one out. See the next message for an example. Have fun, be nice, and no foul language please. Any questions...e-mail me.

Everybody knows ol' Jeanne Sue,
That's JSS to me and you.
One fine day I was at her house,
and ol' Jeanne Sue, thought she saw a mouse.
Well, she started jumpin' up and down,
Screamin' and yellin' and dancin' around.
What a sight that was, ol' Jeanne Sue,
She didn't know quite what to do.
So I grabbed a broom to kill the varmint,
Swingin' and swattin', making sure to harm it.
Then finally, the task was done,
I had that rodent on the run.
But when I lifted the broom.....now this is FUNNY!
That mouse was really a fat DUST BUNNY!

OOOHHH! I love it! Yissterday I couldn't even spel "Poet Laureat"...now I may be one!

Here goes!

Roses are red,
Buttercups are Yeller
That old Shoe
is a very nice feller!

or:

Mystic flits around
Like a sweet Honey Bee.
Into every thing,
but what does she see?

She sees into the hearts
Of friends she has here.
But if she comes near you,
HOLD ON TO YOUR BEER!

(just kidding, Mystic!)

WHEW! That tired my brain out...gotta think on this a while!!
How many can we enter anyhow? I'm just getting warmed up! Jo

Easton, MD(Zone 5a)

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Well, here goes me! LOL

While walking in my yard one day,
a voice very clearly spoke to my head.
"Look at this junk...this mess...disarray!"
Yep, I tell ya, that's just what it said!

"What's it to ya?" I yelled at the top of my voice,
"I worked hard for this stuff that you're calling a mess!
My mower, my hoe-er, my digger of choice,
All done up in piles, and done neatly, no less!"

"There's no beauty, no flowers!" that voice dared yell back,
"USE that hoe-er, that mower, that digger of choice!"
I thought....and I thought.... a retort I did lack,
Oh the wisdom that came from that obnoxious voice!

I stomped to the house, in somewhat of a snit,
"You want beauty and flowers then THAT'S what you'll get!"
I lacked knowledge and guidance, so at the 'puter I lit,
and I'll tell you now, it's the best thing I've done yet!

On the net I did search, and Dave's Garden I found,
and before long I knew, that no further I'd roam.
I found knowledge and guidance, and friends all around,
Now it's my house, my yard, Dave's Garden.....HOME!

PS!!! My hubby's name is Dave too, so this hastily made up poem has two meanings for me.

ODE TO A GARDEN ( I like doing "odes" although this really isn't one)
ODE TO A GARDEN
by: Roadrunner

There is a garden like no other.
It's a place where love can dwell.
The people there are kind and giving.
They can make us all feel so swell!
From morning 'til night it's good to know
If you need some help...a friend will show.
They're just great at cheering one on
Makes you feel like a queen on her throne
No need to feel blue, lonley, or sad
Friends will show up..no need to feel bad
They make life happier, that is so true
If you love people, Dave's Gardens' for you
Dave created this site so good for the soul
For his goodness the whole world should be told
For Trish and Dave we want you to know
We all love Dave's Garden and can reap what we sow!

Now thisun'll make you choke up!

"See what I Saw?"
By: Roadrunner

I saw a Wooly-worm
Inching along the ground.
A bird flew over,
Now he's not around

Then I saw a Bumble-bee
Buzzing around a flower.
A big old frog saw it too
ZAP! Now no bee power!

Is that a snake I see,
Slithering round that tree?
If he gets any closer,
Then there will be no ME!

Look at the Bunny,
Hopping very fast!
A big Hawk spies him.
Now the bunny is Past!

I saw a beautiful Hummingbird,
Flitting around a tree.
I looked up to admire him,
And he POOPED on ME!
The (very) END

The Great Pretender
By: Roadrunner

I want you to meet The Great Pretender..Just-me-Laura that is.
She called COOOEEE and we came running As a hostess she's a whiz!

Had us talking "fair dinkum" and "good on yer, mate".
Taught us about "joeys"...we didn't dare be late!

She served "good tucker", with lots of "dead horse"
Had it on "snags" and it was "bonza", of course!

In the Great Barrier Reef she now has us STRANDED!
Making us hunt food, or as a coward be branded.

She taught us a lot, and is a "kipper" old Gal.
I'm just glad to call Laura a Dave's Garden PAL!

Here is mine:The Bee Is Me By Diane

Soar the sky
I can not lie

Looking for pollen
on flowers from Holland

When I spy a pie of apple
so I fly to take a sample

Just as I land on the pie
Coco hit me in the eye

Go find somewhere else to land
or you are going to feel my hand

So away I do fly to eyes
to see if she has a pie

No pie has she
but she is on her knee

I hover there waiting to see
what kind of pollen is there for me

Than I see Dave's Garden site
so there I decide to lite

So you see I found a home
and never more must I roam

Happy happy me
the little honey bee

Crossville, TN

OH! I like that one. You're GOOD. Jo

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Well here it goes!!

The journey………….

I have travelled this planet both near and far
By plane and foot and by motor car
I have seen life in the making and such wondrous things
Ive seen happiness, sadness and such colour life brings.

But never, even in my wildest dreams
Did I ponder, imagine I’d burst at the seams
Whilst typing and tapping and wiping a tear
That I would find a virtual garden and then find myself here.

A garden you say, with flowers and such?
With mulch and bulbs? Well that’s a bit much!
You dig? You plant? You rake and you hoe?
What garden is this where seeds you can sow?

How can it be that on this confusing machine
That you plant and you grow such amazing things?
What have you found on your journey there
An interesting story I am going to share.

On a quiet old day, not much different to this
On my ‘putey’ I sat looking for friendship I missed
And I travelled to here and to my amazement I found
So many strange creatures, just lurking around!

I found vampires and fairy’s, pumpkins and brooms
With witches all screeching, flying around all the rooms
I saw scarecrows and Frankenstein , medusa and bats
And lots of stone statues, now what do you think of that?

I have hoe downed and partied and drank witches brew
I’ve had breakfast at Coco’s and fallen for Shoe
I have been shipwrecked and waterlogged on an island far away
And I think I am still there, to this very day!

I have shared all my problems till they melted away
I have chatted and emailed with so much to say
Talked of planting and cooking some gardening too
Shared a recipe, a joke and a snack trade or two

So when I tell you such a journey I have happily taken
If it sounds like hard work, your sadly mistaken
For a journey to the garden taken at least once a day
Will most certainly shoo all those old blues away

It’s a tonic, a ‘recipe’ a slave or a potion
So take the trip and get the wheels in motion
To a place that really isn’t so very far away
And bring some sunshine into a dreary old day.

IT WILL FEED THE BUTTERFLY, BIRD AND BEE.
THERE'S NO PRICE, FOR IT IS FREE!
WITH A LITTLE HUM,OF A SONG IN MY HEART,
I LEAVE THEM THERE AS I DEPART.
I'VE GATHERED A "BUNCH" OF FRIENDS;

PIE.....
By: Roadrunner

Pumpkin, pumpkin, in the patch.
Gonna make a pie , all from scratch.
Beat the eggs, add the milk.
Mix it up as smooth as silk.
Now add the sugar, vanilla and spice.
This ole pie will be real nice.
Pour it in the crust, smooth it around.
Bake it in the oven, nice and brown.
Call to the family, say "Come see,
Love for you....just from ME"!

N.C. Mts., NC(Zone 6b)

I don't know how many of us just "read and make no comment" like me,but I really enjoy. Keep it up. Roadrunner I didn't know you had it in you. Wait till I tell your big sister....

"I have always depended on the kindness of strangers"

Laura

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm a sittin at the "puter" readin ditty after ditty
Wishin and a wishin I could think of somethin witty
But my mind is all mushy and I can't think of a thing
That I could say to compete and win the brass ring
with a pumpkin pie poem that was so sweet!
Or Mystic's free form verse that was such a treat!
Roadrunner told us about her "visit down under"
And Honebee's poem was a joy and a wonder.
It's me Laura's Journey sounds so funny and true
And Tinks poem is delightful So what can I do?
Guess I keep watchin and and laugh til I cry
Cause ya all are so much more clever than I!

Easton, MD(Zone 5a)

This is gonna be a hard one to judge.

KendraSue

Crossville, TN

KendraSue,
I've thought about the prize if I should be the lucky winner....how about if you go over to Assateague/Chincoteague for the next "Ponny Swim" and get me a PONY? I have plenty of room out here, and GS would LOVE it! OR, how about a nice, big, fat, Flounder (in lemon and butter sauce) from around Wachapreague or Assawoman? DH used to catch some nice ones there. OH! Just the thought of fresh fish makes me salivate! Inspires me! Jo
