SPRING #2 - 2013

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Love the long views.

Robin, your noid rhododendron is one that I would love and I don't really have a huge fondness most Rhododendron as they are often so overwhelming large and puffy for my taste. I like them in a very large landscape, like the Arnold Arboretum or at Augusta at the Masters and only have a couple including a bonus plant from Avant who sent us Rhododendron diversipilosum 'Milky Way' and one other Rhododendron chionoides which is small.

What a vista looking into Wha's display garden. Beyond anything I could ever hope to even come close to. Applause.

Alison, nice collection of shots and that one of the dragon fly is stunning.

Rosemary, what a fabulous shot of your noid peony. It is a lovely one. Thanks all, Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thanks Patti.. think this is the earliest I have seen a swallow tail butterfly.. couldn't get a shot of it of course

Rosemary I am in love with those yellow trillium! The peony is lovely and i just want to smell those lilacs...we have a few weeks before ours bloom.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks. Here are a few sights from our trip. Nichols Arboretum at U Mich had white redbud, a redbud walk, more TPs. I am hoping my TP and lilacs will grow larger also.It was nice to get home and still have some lovely lilac smells, but not enough to cut.

Don't know where to start, all the photos are wonderful....Allison, I saw a dragonfly yesterday which I thought was early....also saw a swallowtail a few weeks ago. Your collage is very pretty. Bill....your yard is awesome...truly! Rosemary, wonderful peony...I also have lilac Beauty of Moscow...they are the tallest lilacs I've ever seen. Patti, that rhodo came from Roslyn Nursery which used to be on Long Island, close to my stepdaughter's home. I really miss it, they had many specialty rhodos & azaleas, some hybridized by Gustav Melquist...he was prof. emeritus at Uconn, my son met him shortly before he died in his late 90s, I believe. Anyway rhodos do well on my hill, not many shrubs do.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

WOW, just WOW!!! Everyone

Noid iris(that was a suprise), Victoria Falls, Sibs and Iris with daisies and swallowtail on azalea, it was on my JM and would have made an amazing pic but it flew away when I came back out the camera(of course!)

My neighbors want to move...come on down!!!

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Herbacious peonies are yet to come. There's currently a vacuum in my yard because the doublefile viburnums are too young and small to do their jobs! I am going to work harder on this blooming time period. A few TBIs are out, but they are photographing paler than they are. I'll join the crowd at Jen's house.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

woo hoo.. look at them pouring in!!!..and lookie at all the blues!!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

not sure why this came out blue.. it's really purple .. straight from Maine last year!!!.. I bought it at longfellows... was the name?

Batchlors Button - centura montana

me too.. looks happy!!

Thomaston, CT

Love, love all the iris!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

So happy to see everyone's iris popping out. We still have a mess of tulips out which is a real plus and some Narcissus. One that I took a blurry picture is stunning and is called Narcissus Division 5 Triandrus Horn of Plenty, but I will shoot another of it tomorrow and post it. The Wood Hyacinth are out and I can see I need to add some more of the white ones to one bed and some blue ones, Hyacinthoides hispanica Danube, to another and I will order more of this wild Multi-Flowering Tulip Florette that is naples-yellow with dark red petal edges that is still blooming away. Yeah. Here are some shots, mostly from today. Patti

I have been enjoying all the photos.

Our wood hyacinths are pink, deep among the shrubs. Must get blue next fall which is my favorite color.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Lovely shots
Bunny ate all the centura here, tree peony blooms faded in the heat, but my iris are doing the best ever. That is after I got rid of the borer last year.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

So cool you still have tulips

Everything is really starting to pop open now

Drove past a house that really needs to weed their yard(esp since they are on a corner lot of a busy road) but I saw gorgeous Lupines in the midst of all the weeds

The roses are filling my side yard with their scent...heavenly!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Dianthus with Geranium, Dianthus by itself, this Salix integra ‘Hakuro-nishiki’ is going to eat my house!!! It has gotten ridiculously big, will trim in back( a lot!) in February, Dutch Iris 'Golden Beauty' and Aquilega 'Yellow Queen'

I need to move this foxglove the color is clashing with Mastery Iris

Marilyn: I remember you saying you had grown Verbascum Violete.I have had some for a few years and once again the plants just dont come upto my expectations. They seem to witheraway after a couple of years.I am declaring war on them for my garden.I will replace them with a different plant, probably euphorbia Blackbird which is also "iffy".

Thomaston, CT

Yes, the plants don't last long, Jo, although they do sometimes reseed.....hope i get lucky. Jen, I love the veronica Crater Lake....that's on my list!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

love that yellow queen Jen!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

The beech is lovely.

Bill,
Your yard is such an inspiration. Looking at the edge between the lawn and the beds, it appears you don't use any edging material, you have a dip at the base of the mulch and that is all? I assume you have to maintain this with an edging tool? How often do you have to work on it? I ask because we have a new large amount of edge around the new deck, and I love the clean look of your edges, but wondered how hard it is to maintain.

To everyone, I so love the pictures of your yards, especially here in the cold and rain with hardly a bloom to be found. About all I can say for the weather is that it is good for transplanting, cause you don't need to protect things from the sun...
