DO YOU HAVE SOME SIGNS OF SPRING 2013? #3

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I think so Jen, I have no clue since all the tags blew away. JB

The clematis exhibit at the Philly show was to die for.

Do any of you go to Longwood Gardens to their shows? My neighbor went there to their school....did not know they had a school. Horticulture degree I think. Anyone know?????

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't know of a school, it would make sense. I went to Trenton Jr. College as it was transforming into Mercer Co. Comm. College, we only had a 2 year hort. program. Our ideal dream was to attend DelVal and get a job at for a pallet, bread, and water at Longwood. We spent as much time as possible visiting, as students we got a great rate and a few tours of the production areas by friendly staff. But alas reality caught up with us and off to work we go.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I need to ask her where she went to school. Maybe she just worked of an apprenticeship there for another school. On holidays like Halloween, all the kids that were together at Longwood get together and carve hundreds of pumpkins for their display. It is really something to see. Some of the pumpkins are so clever. The things they grow and how they grow them is amazing. We are due to have a pizza lunch again so I will ask then and let you know. No one can hold a candle to their planters this time of year. Also the different types of plants, both nursery , garden and tropicals. Must go to bed. I am beat. Nite all. JB

Wow, the lilies are up! That was fast! :) Anyone else seeing any growth from the group order lilies?

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

My day lilies that I got from Breck a few weeks ago are not coming up. Will they come up this year? I thought they would be up by now if they were going to do anythinig. They never sent them until late due to the weather.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

JB i would think that they would be up by now definitely. Although I'm a bit south of you mine are pretty much full size. They are vigorous growers.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

JBerger: If they don't come up this year, they probably won't appear next year. But if they were dormant when you received them and they've only been in two weeks, I'd wait a couple more weeks before asking for a replacement.

I was at a lecture last night by a landscape designer (a responsible one -- did a large mostly native garden for the NY Botanical garden) and she said they planted a large area of trillium and it looked beautiful. What type of trillium do you think she would have used and where can you buy it responsibly -- I'd like to try that (on a smaller scale).

I think it wouldn't hurt to get in touch with the company now. It gives you more credibility.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

The two Lily bulbs I bought at the Flower and garden Show in beg. of March are not up either....
I planted them in the beg. of April--I think...
Do any critters eat Lily bulbs?

I will have a picture of a new iris I bought last year. it is full of buds--ready to pop.
It is blue and white speckled...
Think I will go outside and look....YEAH!!! it is open!!

Si is my neighbor, Olga's, Rhodo--popping all over the place--VERY pretty!!!!

Sally -- that's a great suggestion - thanks!

What's the quickest and most reliable way to get mini blinds to use as garden labels? I don't want to pay much.

Also - my mom used to buy "U" shaped pieces of stiff coated wire -- maybe 2' tall -- that she'd use to protect new plantings. It didn't protect them in any real sense -- that is, animals could easily reach them -- but it served as a useful reminder to us that a tiny plant was there and should be avoided. I want to get some and don't know what they are called.

Goodwill, Craigs list, Freecylce or thrift shop

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks. The problem is that I don't want to go on a hunt. Do you think places like Home Depot save their mistakes? Or maybe save the pieces they cut off when they customize blinds?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy--
HD cuts blinds to size for FREE. The ends fall in a receptacle below and are trashed.

Vertical blind ends have a lot of material for cutting up. Go to the Floor and Wall Dept.
and ask them if they have any blind ends. They will give them to you.

Otherwise--you can buy a mini-blind at Wallmart or even HD for about $5-$6.
Plenty to cut up--and they are all uniform size....

Happy, google "landscape fabric pins", and let me know if those are what you can use. I still have some at home and can bring you some if you Dmail me.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Donnerviille -- no, I have a box of those so I know just what you mean. The "U" shaped things I am talking about are much bigger and wider -- they serve as a low-key fence. I'll poke around our garage -- I might still have one of Mom's to use as an example.

Gita: Thanks! That's just what I wanted to know!

Terp- if Ric didn't have that great hippy, that's be a great avatar for him.
Say, you need an avatar...

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Hahaha not a bad idea sally!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

There are a few of us left without one--(Avatar, that is)..

Me? Nothing has hit me as representative of ME...
When the time is right--it will appear...

And you are the least shy of all of us of posting pics of yourself...chuckle

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yeah! But when you post a picture--people look at it and move on.

When i Post (which is quite often), the Avatar I would choose will be staring at you every time
I write something....SO--it has to be good, NOT "in your face"---something that is pleasing....etc...

I will--all in good time......G.

Beautiful photos Sally!

WOnderful, Speedie!

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Have fun Speedie.
I am still enjoying the Spring things here at the farm. Today a walk in the rain was fun, we got a bit wet but needed the exercise. We did see the Weigela really looking pretty again this year.

The field Iris are coming along too. And, the pink peony.

Lilacs are almost over and sweet shrubs are going strong. That is the update from this end. Hope you all have a great day.

My Peonies are still waiting to pop. But I'm so happy that they ARE going to pop. I've suffered many years of poor bloom- but now have a bunch of an old one that I made sure to plant very shallow, and have success.
Iris have stayed very pretty with the mostly mild damp weather last week.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

pretty pics everyone , real nice . lots of rain and 80's here .. Some iris ; #4 Clematis
