Heehee, not at all, sissy stars
Have a wonderful trip!!!
DO YOU HAVE SOME SIGNS OF SPRING 2013? #3
sissy---
There are many kinds and types of Camellias. I will tell you what I know about mine.
Camellias do not like direct sun--so a nice, protected, bright shady spot is good.
They do not like winds blowing on them--so plant them in a sheltered spot.
They like acid food--such as being mulched with pine needles, you can throw some
coffee grounds around them, etc.
Mine sits to the right side of my front door and steps. There is an old Yew on one side of it--
and an old, tall Canadian Hemlock on the other side of the steps. Both act as wind breaks.
Mine has thick, shiny, dark evergreen leaves.
Take cuttings from stems that have started to harden off....called "softwood" cuttings...
I cannot advise you on rooting them...but I bet there are plenty people that can.
I do not do anything "special" to it. I kind of tend to ignore most of my plants...
Have a safe trip! Gita
Gita, that is a GRRRRRRRRREAT Mother's Day sign!!! I'm so glad the day went so well at work with the kiddies, too. Yay!! =) Your daughter is lovely, even as she sits on the ground with tools in hand, heehee. Looks as though she picked a gem for a BF, to put those shades up for you. Look forward to seeing more pics, of the shades and the cart in action! =)
FINALLY, the Clematis(es... how do you pluralize "Clematis"!?!) out back are doing what they are 'supposed to'!
The Plumbago are filling back out nicely, but no blooms yet. I guess it might help if they would get even a teeny bit of sun, but that's just NOT gonna happen where they are. I do need to do a bit of weeding around them though... hang my head in shame.
here's a little funny story about my sign....
It is a regular HD sign--and where the big, red heart is, was a big fat "$" sign.
I cut out a heart decal of sorts, and put it over the "$" sign--and had to spray
5 coats of red paint over it to cover that.
Worked out great--and fit right into the caption---"Plant a flower in her heart".....
G.
Gita, they're lucky to have you at that HD. My local HD must be the worst one in the state. I've had such terrible experiences there that I've actually considered making an official complaint.
I think the white fragrant flower from my previous post may be a gardenia!
ss--
By all means, make a constructive complaint to the right authority figure in your region.
There is also a number to call under "Customer Care"--which is there mostly for unhappy customers...
And--there is a number (anonymous) to call on the "Aware Line...where you can report anything--or anyone..
If your issues are with management--seek out their higher up. A regional person...
If it is with associates--talk to the store manager...
Gita
Wonderful sign, great project Gita. You are so worth your weight in gold to them. You do go the extra mile. Hope they appreciate you. HD is not my favorite but you seem to make your's special. Good job.
Have a wonderful day and enjoy your family. Mine came early for breakfast and are on their way back home already. Short but wonderful visit. Dinner with Rob's Mom and family tonight. I am tired so maybe I can sneak in a few hours of relaxation between visits. Later, JB
I have to second this: "HD is not my favorite but you seem to make your's special."
Gita: Thanks for the camellia info. I *might* have just the right spot.
We are off in 10 minutes. We got a working camera, again, so I plan to have lots of photos of lovely Irish gardens for you (assuming anything is in bloom over there!).
'See you' in 12 days!
Have fun Sissy.
Gita, Very nice display bet you had a lot of fun and the kids did too.
So I saw donner at the mason-dixon ARS sale and show in Westminster on Saturday. Unfortunately she got there as we were ending so there wasnt much left in terms of plants. In fact two vendors had already packed up and left because they sold out. I'm sure she still got to enjoy the beautiful trusses on display. I was busy cleaning up and catching up with people I don't see that often so I only have two pictures from the sale and no names attached to them. The third is from my garden, "solidarity."
I wish I took pictures of the ribbon winners.
Enjoy!

Solidarity is gorgeous, Paul.
There were amazing things there. Jill took lots of pics. And bought five bushes. Some people had other shrubs and a few plants too for sale like hosta.
I'm sad I missed yall!! But I'm glad there was stuff for you to see and buy. One of my favorites there other then the club and wwhite's azaleas is a couple from west Virginia. I missed them because they sold out which is great!!!
Let's see some pictures Jill!!! Can't wait to hear about your experience.
I just posted a list of 17 desiduous azaleas I saw for sale today at my local Ace Hardware store!!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1303167/
The fragrance is nice and I liked the different leaf colors and shapes.
Terp, I hope you saw the lady across from White's who had a book on Kalmia for sale.
They were gone! Did you speak to them? If it was a couple from west virginia, I have their email. The man is soft spoken and very very knowledgeable his wife is so friendly and can talk your ear off. I was extremely sad to miss them but happy for them that they sold out.
Just looked at the link coleup posted on the "Shopping" Thread....
Just guessing--but from all appearances--my neighbor's Rhodo sure looks like
a "Nove Zembla". That brought back a flash of memories.....had'nt heard that name in a long time.
Also--under the Heat tolerant Azaleas--my old, white ine just may be--"Delaware Valley White"...
If so--I am glad to have names....G.
Gita: That Rhododendron is lovely -- is this your same neighbor who has such a green thumb at taking cuttings, because I'd love a rooted cutting if such a thing exists and if she'd be willing!
No--This is my Spanish neighbor, Olga.
The bed this Rhodo is in faces the E. side of my house. This bed gets full sun.
Olga does not do much gardening---She has physical issues and is still depressed (in my opinion)
since her husband died 3 years ago. She refuses to take any meds the Dr. gives her...
because she doesn't like how they make her feel....
The neighbor on the other side (the Pakistani Lady) is the one that keeps propagating everything....
When they moved in--they cut down every shrub, and eventually, every tree as well.
She also, pretty much, dug up all the irises and bulbs and kept moving them around or getting rid of them.
Now her yard is full of pots with all kinds of things in them and her endless Roses she grows from cuttings.
Oddly--most things she plants--grow....She is the one who had the 6' fence built all around her back yard.
I don't see her much any more...which is Ok with me. More privacy for me too....
Anyway--I tend to attend to a lot of Olga's plants in this bed, especially, as she seldom comes around to my side.
I am attempting to root a couple cuttings of this Rhodo. They are in closed, qt.-sized water bottles and seem to be OK.
I also know, that, just because there is new growth showing--does not mean there are roots below.
I plan to leave them in the bottles until I see roots. I may remove the caps when it gets hot.
I will bring you one of the bottles--since you have now asked twice--and you will have to fend with
it in the future...May be a few years you see anything exciting.
You still want it????
Gita
Paul You big scary guy you!
Does that Jack have a vareigated leaf?
The lady with the Kalmia book was quite a large woman. If you were at White's table, she would have ben across and to the right a bit- not sure what else her table had going on.
Sally- Yea I think so. That is why it caught my eye.
Oh that is definitely not them. Oh well.
We had a nasty sign of spring this morning, a rather hard frost anywhere the air was still. I don't think there is much damage, we only had a few things planted out. I may lose a couple of peppers but the rest should be OK, I'll know by this afternoon. We got tons of rain this weekend (my gauge froze), which we badly needed, but the weatherman says we are still at a deficit. I woke up in the middle of the night to find our sweet little grandson had turned the GH heater off. I caught it at about 41*F so it should be fine. Last time he was here we could have cooked lobsters in the hot tub. LOL Maybe I should buy him boxing gloves to wear when he visits, limiting his activities to flipping switches.
Our dwarf iris looked OK they are close to the foundation.
Near tragedy!! Hope that's the limit of the damage there. What a pretty color mix in those iris.
Somebody here flipped the main switch on the furnace once. Caused a bit of confusion...haha. After that it had a big ol piece of duct tape over it.
We bottomed out around 40 we think, with our bay effect. My Plumie probably grumbling but I wasn't going to haul that gangly heavy thing back in the house- I tucked it in the corner that gets the first sun, and crossed my fingers.
Ric was outside checking things out a bit better. Said the water in the wheel barrow was frozen. Sure is cold out there but it looks nice so maybe a little later it will warm up. Glad I was too busy to get any of the annuals planted. I never plant before Mothers Day but I heard a local radio plant guy a few weeks ago state that the long range 10-15 day forecast didn't show any signs of low temps so it would be OK to start planting. I was going to start based on that and just didn't have the time to do it. I am hoping to get out there later today and dig a few more plants for the swap. I just put those iris in last year so maybe by next year I will have a few to share.
Ric: I've been meaning to find a "low temperature" alert of some sort, because there is a separate heater in our garage and I won't always know if the heater goes out. I bet there is one for greenhouses.
I stashed all my trays of annuals and the Brugs and some HB's in the shed...
They were calling for temps in the 30's. Don't know how cold it actually got?
Better safe than sorry....
I have not really planted any annuals yet...Kind of waiting for after the Swap to see
where all kinds of things will fit--including all the Lily bulbs and the caladiums I am yet to get.
I did prep the now empty bed where my WS shrub was to be planted...
Potted up the Monster-to-be Dr. seuss in a bigger pot and then it will go in the center
of this round bed. I have a premonition--it will grow HUGE this year...it already has a good start...
Right now--I am dealing (we ALL are) with all the sprawling, green foliage from all the bulbs...
How I hate this time.............:o(
Haven't been outside yet--it is nice and sunny--suppose to get to the mid 60's later...
Yeah? Gita
--My Camellia is now regularly dropping its blooms--they all still look so perfect....
--Koromo Shukibu Azalea is now in full bloom
--The one Hosta I actually own--it has huge, variegated leaves....sits in a pot by my shed
--The Dr. waiting to be potted up and planted...see the size of its trunk already?
--My daughter, Aina, and DH Mark (seated) and my daughter, Benita, who has been visiting here
all week with her BF, Mathew. First time I am meeting him--he is VERY nice...I approve.....;o)
lovely family picture Gita!
Gita, how special to have your lovely family all together for a while! Enjoy mama!
Well, my van is loaded with plants, but not the ones for the Swap! Hope to leave these 'tenders' there tonight, too as it will again be cold. Haven't planted any maters yet. Will soil warm up? Less than half of my tropicals have made it outside. This is first year I can remember schlepping lots of plants in and out. Not my favorite thing. Later this am I will go out and open up the van for some fresh air and so they don't cook.
Have been saying to myself since the beginning of April that "tomorrow'will be the day to leave them all out for good...lol, tomorrow may indeed be the day , not because of their tolerance for the prevaling weather but because of my dwindling tolerance to schlepping! (Trying to type this very quietly because some plants, if they get wind of one not caring about their survival just up and croak whether or not it is warranted! Sshhh.
Have to say a big kudos to the three small garden centers I visited on Mothers Day who were already making plans to protect as much of their tender inventory as possible. A daunting task that I have not faced since caretaking 8 large commercial greenhouses full of tender babies. Yes, there are alarm systems and back ups to back ups for greenhouses, the most critical of which is someone willing to be up and doing in the middle of the night! Go Ric.

Yes Happy there is an alarm for GH to let you know if your temps drop. We haven't gotten one yet all we have is a basic indoor/outdoor temp gage. We have one sensor in the GH and one in the backroom that tells us what the temp is in the GH without having to go down there to look.
Gita, What a lovely family picture.
Lovely family pic, Gita
LOL, Judy. I am typing quietly, too, lest your tenders have very sensitive ears.
Holly - If you guys settle on one of those GH alarms, please let me know what you decide on -- I spent some time researching it years ago and then lost interest -- but I'll be devastated if the heater goes out and I'm not aware of it.
Took a few more pictures just now. Too tired to do any more stuff outside...
As much as I love my daughter and her BF (now..)--it takes a toll on the
mind and body--because things are kicked out od kilter...my daily doings, that is...
The rtook off for the City--Inner harbor--Fells Point--Lexington Market (world famous)
to introduce Mathew to our Soft Crab Sandwiches and Crab cakes...
They will bum around until the Orioles game....which starts at 7PM.
Who knows WHEN they will get home.....
Anyway--pictures:
--First bloom to open on my "Proteus: Clematis. There are 4 more fat buds...
--"Multi Blue Clematis
--Snow cap iris
--This is a pink Azalea that has existed for Eons squished between the Camellia and an old Yew.
It gets absolutely NO sunlight! And--as you can see--it can co-exist in great competition from
roots of the yew ans the Camellia---who was it that asked? May depend on the variety.
--The two Sweethearts on the porch swing....nice to see that they are both comfortable here...
I am amazed at all you have blooming Gita. Beautiful plants and flowers. Thanks so much for sharing.
When I lived in PA, we spent a lot of time in MD. We had a houseboat at Trojan Harbor and we lived there in the summer as much as we could. We also loved Gabler's (not sure I spelled it correctly) crabs and went there as often as our time permitted. Miss both of those so much but the memories are wonderful.
I am coming along with my little flowers. Every morning Charle and I walk and take a picture or two. This was this morning. No names because no tags remaining. LOL Storm damage. LOL
the speckles on that first iris are something else!
Thanks, JB---
Sometimes I am amazed myself at aall that is crammed in my garden.
Just starting now are all the Peonies and the Irises. Two are blooming already.
Clematis also...Two out of three are in bloom already.
Then will come the Daylilies, and the asst. daisies....and so on....
No annuals are in bloom yet--to speak. Probably because I have not planted them yet...
waiting for after the Swap...
--Still the 1st bloom of the "Proteus"--but now fully open. The first wave of blooms on this
are known to be doubles. TheCap" Iris
--On each side of the Proteus Clematis are Monkshood bunch. Doing well--so far..
Dr. Seuss planted now in its future home...the old WS bed....
--More and more petals dropping from my camellia....such a sad "Good Bye'....
Love that White Azalea
I need to get some more Clems, just LOVE them
JB are those Iris Tall bearded?Mine aren't blooming yet here, just the dwarfs
