Home page has been broken for several weeks ...

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I've attached the error that I see when I try to click on a thread or forum from the home page. It has been this way since I renewed my subscription last month. If I log back out & back in, it works once, then goes back to this annoyance. I can reach forums by clicking through the Communities/Discussion groups pages, but that is more annoying than logging out & back in every time I want to check the new posts on a thread.

Can an admin or savvy user tell me whether this is a DG issue or something unique to my computer? I've stopped looking at DG every day because of it.
This is the error:

Is it just that one forum that gives you problems, or all of them? I haven't had any problems so if it's something that's happening with all forums then it seems like it's probably something with your browser, but I don't visit that particular forum. so maybe there's something weird with it.

It's all the forums plus my DMail. I can read articles.

Try a different browser. If you are using Explorer, try Safari or Google Chrome. I consistently use Safari on a Mac, but I will need to renew soon, so I'll see if that has anything to do with it.

Now, Cathy, why didn't I think of that. Yep, everything works fine with Google Chrome. So it's my Firefox that is broken. For this site only. Weird.
Thanks for the solution.

Have you tried clearing your cache or rebooting the computer to see if this might fix the problem you are seeing in Firefox? Also, have you been keeping your version of Firefox current? (i.e., installing all updates)

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Yes, cleared everything but I may be remiss in updating the software. But it has given me the opportunity to try out Chrome & it seems to be a better choice anyway!

Kid, you're on the way!

Sorry we didn't see this sooner, although we would have given you the same trouble-shooting tips and advice. You should be able to get Mozilla to work if/when you want to switch back.

Heh heh. Speaking of Google Chrome which I am using, About one or two days a week [still] I cannot get the server to connect to DG. No other site does this unless heavy rain is coming and interfering momentarily with the satellite connection.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

That's definitely odd :-)

I've had the same issue. Does anyone else get a shrill buzzing from their computer ONLY when DG is on the screen? My IT b'friend thinks that the site code is asking my computer to do something it's not happy about.

No sound here.

Are you running Windows? If so have you kept up with all of the updates to both Windows and your browser(s)? Also, do you run some form of antivirus and antispyware software regularly? If you are running Windows, it's essential that you keep up with all updates (set your computer to download them automatically) and that you run antivirus and antispyware programs. These things are important for any operating system but even more so for Windows. The kind of thing you are describing could be something as simple as some form of spyware running on your computer of which you are unaware. Any time a Windows computer starts to do anything unusual, I run the antispyware tool and the antivirus tool just to be sure it isn't one of these things. In my experience, it is usually spyware.

The other day you indicated that you may not have kept up with the Firefox updates. Many of the updates are fixes for security vulnerabilities. Failure to keep your browser (and Windows or other OS) up to date is an invitation for spyware, viruses, and the like.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Thanks. Firefox actually was up to date so that was not the issue & it is STILL misbehaving. I'm in IT so definitely stay up with necessary updates & have a heavy-duty firewall as well. But I would NEVER set my computer to download updates automatically. I like to check out what's being changed.

Yes, well, I don't mean to be difficult. Just trying to help. I'm a software engineer. The instructions I've given you are sound advice. You should apply all updates from Firefox, Windows, etc. If you don't trust them, you may as well quit now. It's good that you have a firewall, but that alone will not protect you. You still need to keep your software up to date, particularly your OS and your browsers. You still need to run antivirus and antispyware programs regularly, especially if you are running Windows. You may be able to get away w/o the virus and spyware stuff if you are running Linux or OsX, but not Windows. If I were running Windows and having the problems you describe, I would immediately purchase or download one or more spyware tools and run them right away to make sure the problems are not due to spyware running on the computer.

Thanks, DOS (appropriate initials?)!

You are very welcome, summerkid

Sure, DOS is fine. When choosing a screen name, I failed to consider length and that others would have to type it.
