DO YOU HAVE SOME SIGNS OF SPRING 2013? #2

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Haha HM, I'll keep that in mind next time I have the urge to weed!

Speedie, I got a huge hosta from Holly and Ric last year and it's looking just beautiful! :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

JB--sweet kitty!

Oh no sag!! I feel your pain too.

So the Quince bush is paying for its keep right now. This summer when I am constantly digging up suckers from the flower bed I will remember this show.

Morning all. Happy Earth Day and Week.

I have The Seed Site bookmarked for when I want to identify a seedling or two (800 seedlings)
A treasure trove of info,,,,
http://theseedsite.co.uk/seedlings.html

Lots of baby oak trees here. I think the squirrels follow the "acorn in every pot" method" and two or three for good measure!

Below is a picture of 'Empress Wu' hosta. I saw one yesterday that was emerging and already 4 foot tall!!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

HOLY... manure, coleup that thing is the biggest hosta EVER. My dentist office parking are has some big ones but not that!
speediebean's nursery had a row of the one that we see more often sold as a 'really big hosta' whose name totally escapes me...

I think I have a zillion pink bleeding heart babies this year, need to check seed site pics.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup: That site could be invaluable -- I haven't explored it yet, though. It would only work if you have an inkling of what the seed might be, no?

Empress Wu is on my wish list!

That's exactly the info I was looking for! always questioning seedlings since they usually look so different from the mature state

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Happy Earth Day to All. Coleup you are remarkable. I have never seen anyone on any list that can come up with just wonderful information sites as you can. I am so happy I have found you and I swear I will follow you. Maybe even "stalk" you for more links. I find myself not thinking of google anymore, I think maybe coleup already has that.....LOL....I am old remember? Line of least resistance. Your hosta should go in the book of records. I have never seen one that big around here.
Dag Blame it. It is too cold today. We had a heavy frost this morning on parts of the farm and now the wind is blowing off the ocean in gusts that feel like winter. Good day to work in the greenhouse. Not a weeding day for sure.

I agree.

Coleup: That site is wild. Nice work.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

This little guy sure is pretty. I think it may have come from last years swap? I have it marked as Primula, Primrose kisoana anyone recognize it?

HollyAnn, that's a quince? I thought it was a kind of crabapple. We had one in our backyard, Daddy always said it was. Quince, huh? It's got some wicked thorns on it! Have a huge one outside the br window. It's got mega-suckers surrounding the heating/air thingie out there. Yuck! Thanks so much for the correction on the plant. They are definitely beautiful in full bloom, though!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

SparklinBarb, I'm with you. I always thought they were crabapples. There must be many similarities between the two.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Gosh, Gee whiz, (blushing) but the real kudos go to the many many who have made the info I seem 'lucky; enough to find (I'm Feeling Lucky") available to all! A big thanks to all on this Earth Day!

There is a lot to learn about seedling/plant ID but the Seed Site lets you do a search by common or Latin name. Beyond that we get to learn some Botany (monocot/dicot) and plant families down to species specific classifications.

Long before Google, we could earn extra credit in High School Biology if we could key out and identify the plant that Mr Abraham (If you an ID a plant, thank a teacher!) put out each week. I was the only one to ID an Amarylis as none of us had ever seen one before. My, how times have changed. Next, I Stalked the Wild Asparagus with wonderful Euwell Gibbons!

Guess I'm also good at putting a good search inquiry into Google to get results that work for me.

Bleeding Heart seedlings for you Sally

AHHH--finally sitting down. Been running around--shopping a bit....
Now it is 3PM--the weather is gorgeous--and I just had to sit down for a while....
Then, i will see if i still feel like going out and digging somewhere......;o/

I have had this Seeds and Seedling ID site forever---will post the link below
to compliment the one coleup posted.
This one has the seedpod, the seeds, and the seedlings ID'd by pictures.
You can search alphabetically for whatever you are looking for.

Coleup, I was referred to that seedlings website last year when I was having the exact same issue -- weeding out volunteers by mistake. My problem is that I didn't know where to begin! It didn't even occur to me that the California poppies would have self seeded in that spot.

I think at some point in my learning process that site will become handy. :)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Coming back from local garden center and realized I've been yanking up Gaillardia cause I thought it was a weed, no wonder I keep saying "Gaillardia doesn't grow in my yard" LOL

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: The site you posted is the same as the one Coleup posted....

What a wonderful site for seedlings, thank you Coleup!! I have to agree with the others, you are remarkable AND a Treasure!!

Well PHOOEY!! I typed a LOT more than that (above^^), but someone ate it! =(

Let's see, what had I said??..... Described the pics (first one is one that I bought at work last year, second one is, as I recall, a Plant Swap gift from Pippi last Fall, and the third one (the BIG guy) is the Big Blue Giant (not its real name) from Gita at the Swap last Fall. Gita, do you remember what variety it is??

Sally, I don't recall for sure which Hosta it was that you saw at the nursery when you came to visit... I'm thinking Patriot? Sum and Substance? Blue Angel? I know we carry all three, and this is the first year we are actually carrying Empress Wu! I almost bought one on Friday.. really glad I didn't.. WHERE would I put it!?!?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

It surely is impressive!!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

speedie---

Since I did not have any "regular" Hostas to share last year--the one you have has to be
the August Lily Hosta....the one with the beautiful, white, fragrant blooms.

Sure looks like it....You can divide it later in the year--or early spring next year.

I love it--mine are just re-establishing themselves after I dug them all up and tore them apart
last year.

here is a picture of the blooms---G.

Perkasie, PA(Zone 6b)

Hey, All. I'm back from a long hiatus (ah, aging is wonderful). I have got one weeping cherry in bloom, but nowhere near as lovely as it usually is. Lots of dafs and narcissi, my corcus are mostly done, but the muscaria are and Dorothy W andromeda are providing some nice contrast to the forsythia which were clever enough to hold back a bit this year.

On the other hand, the weather is really making garden work difficult. I've only cleaned out three beds (gads, the weeds seem to have have had a good winter). It seems that when I am not at work, it is cold and or rainy.

It is so nice to see everyone's' lovely pics.

Morning all you lovely people, the sun is shining and the lilacs are looking like they made it over the winter. A few days of warmer weather just may give me some blooms to share.
As per a request, we are moving right along to another location to help save some of our friends some time: HOLD YOUR HATS, HERE WE GO.............

Thanks, Sally and Coleup! :-) You make me so happy.

I am currently researching a new camera and hope to post some pics. We are off to Ireland in a couple of weeks, and I really hope to have some lovely Irish garden pics to share.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Well--let me see........
I did take some pictures in the last few days....not necessarily of blooms...

1--my pot of "Campanula Elizabeth"--overflowing.....Anyone want some? let me know....
--2&3--A,maryllis
--4 late blooming Daffodils. I have these in front of my Koromo Shukibu Azalea--
as well as all around my KK Hibiscus . Need to dig the first clump up--it is too crowded--
has stopped blooming...Will have bulbs by faall Swap... This is a pretty Daff.
Blooms last a long time.....so do the leaves when they are dying off.....:o(
--5 Kwanzan Cherries in bloom.

OK! I still need an ID for this little shrub I have growing....

I thought it may be Holly's Pussy Willow--but I don't think so.
Almost looks like a Forsythia--but I would never have one in a pot...

Now I am thinking----you too--two years back at the swap---Someone gave me a jasmine cutting--
probably Chantelle(???)--or was it someone else. I had not asked for it--but someone gave me one anyway.

Does this, by any chance, look like a jasmine of some sort???????

I am sure, eventually, it will "do its thing"---whatever that will be.
Here it is again--it has grown more leaves....

C'mon! help me out............someone??? Thanks--Gita

They don't look like jasmines to me.
