spring time plant shopping

Chantelle---

I believe the stand is $34.99. We always have this one. They display it in the garden
with 3 HB's hanging from it. VERY pretty! It is made of heavy metal.
G.

edited to correct the price. It is $39.99
also--the iron stand had 4 arms.

Local HD just got in a shipment of Winter Jasamine Jasamine polyanthus. fragrant vine for sunny location.

Thinking there will be lots of 'reduced price' plants that didn't sell for Easter for those stores that reduce rather than trash. Even in stores that routinelytrash, if you are there and see items you wish to purchase at a reduced price being pulled, ask an associate if you buy all of them or say at least 10 if they can give you a reduced price or cart price. If they say no, ask who you can speak to who can use that "special SKU#" for discount. If that person/s is not available ask when they will be and return then.

You will probably come home with more plants than you need (don't be picky as this 'works' because it decreases the work of trashing plants ) but what are friends and swaps for?

Getting to know the plant merchandizing routines and seasons/ delivery schedules (and Personnel) at a Garden Center near you puts you in top position for finding the plants you want. I pass my local big box stores every day. HTH Judy

ahhh. I have to do two job interviews monday- so stopping at Lowes afterwards for Easter plant clearance would really be a nice treat. Crossing my fingers for ...an orchid?

Does Homestead typically do much with clearance? I'll be in Annapolis anyway. When I went to the Severna Park Homestead last month, their clearance plants were 'less common' but still not exactly a bargain -- ya know what I mean.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally, when I was at Homestead last two weekends they did have 'reduced' orchids on the reduced cart in houseplant area at rear of store. Not being an orchid person, can't comment on price.

If you go to Homestead, you might be able to see some of the plants I've been talking about like the 'Pink Frost' hellebores, Bulls Blood Beets, watercress starts, sedges, and Medinilla Magnifica (on display in front of store just to left of entry across from desk) and become one ofthe growing numbers of us who have actually seen this plant!

The hellebores section has many from Pine Knot Farms where Aspenhill got many of her beauties.

You'll also see some containers and plantings using veggies as a main feature,,some pics below. If you want a guided tour or a wing mate just let me know!

as you know I have this crippling cheapness* about buying plants because so much can be gotten through trade and propagation. I could be tempted by a small orchid on sale if they loaded up before Easter. But since orchids can stay in bloom for such a long time, I don't know that those would really be marked down, at Homestead anyway..

I will get out of interviews about noon, off Truman Parkway, and want to grab a bite and decompress. Then walk through Homestead around one ish...does that work at all? Maybe they will have a fragrant Oncidium totally out of bloom...

we should have a thread "What plants do you NOT like, for whatever reason, cuz everybody is entitled to that!"

sally--

What jobs are you interviewing for? Hoping to get????

I always found it hard to interview--as it leaves one so vulnerable...to the choice of
the interviewer.
probably, why i always ended up in garden-related jobs. NO stress...

Good luck to you! Gita

Had me speculating, too. Let's see, off H Truman is Health Dept (former), Ag Dept (degree) and Library HDQ (current) , the DMV and an office complex with assorted businesses. I'm guessing not the DMV!

Yes, I think something on Mon and Homestead could be arranged. And of course, the best of job seeking luck to you. Anyone who hires you would be indeed lucky, too. J

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

(Excuse me for starting a diversion topic - Anybody not interested please skip this post)
Agent J as usual uses her detective skills to great advantage!

My home branch of Library where I currently put books away (page) can hire a job share (part time) library associate. One of the people who answer questions, read to kids, various and sundry helping public access our resources.. My co workers have been incredibly supportive and coaching me. Doubling my hourly wage would not hurt a bit. THere are also jobs for part time checkout desk people which is a separate job in this system, and would be at another branch. Less thrilling but I would take it. So I have to go to HQ. Yes interviewing is painful at times, but I have done this 2x before so I have some comfort and preparation. Heck I have lots of comfort and prep gonna blow them away!!!!!! I have good odds of a different part time job at library somewhere. EEK CHange-- It is scary!!!!

Sally -- good luck with it!

If anyone is interested: I am contemplating putting in an order with North Creek Nurseries, http://www.northcreeknurseries.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.home/index.htm. They are a wholesaler that I think supplies plugs to Santa Rosa -- they have very similar plant lists. I need to get some fairly large quantities of plants to address erosion on a hill behind our house. They sell only by tray, but their prices are good. They seem to have two sizes of plants -- grower and landscape. I might even drive up to pick them plants up (it is a 2 hour drive away). They have a minimum $300 order. I think I can meet that on my own.

If anyone wants to add a full (or more) to my order to avoid the minimum (and shipping, if I do drive up to pick them up), with the caveat that I'm not sure this is going to happen.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Yes Sally, good luck!

Happy, when coleup mentioned North Creek nursery in one of the posts somewhere, I checked out their site several times. Like you, I need large quantities of plants and could easily meet a $300 minimum order. Heck, if I can get about 300 plants from it, it sure beats getting about 20-25 grown out plants from local nurseries for the same cost. I ended up placing an order to try it out - mostly for my new turtle garden. Anyway, my thinking was that I would see how well some of these options work out. I'm getting a few bare root plants with the ADR order and getting various sizes of starter plugs from North Creek. If you end up getting an order too, we can compare notes and figure out additional group buys for next year with the best bang for the buck experience under our belts. I was talking to SSgardener at the seed swap, and will share some of the hellebores order with her, but she was also interested in grasses and might want to add to yours.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, aspen, and thanks ssgardener. I don't want to get into splitting flats this go-round. I was hoping just to accommodate anyone who wants to buy a full flat. I need to get a lot of plants planted very very quickly because of our erosion problem. But I'd love to compare notes with you and plot for a future group order.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy--

Did I ever give you any starts of the perennial Chrysanthemum Pacificum?

They cover a lot of ground in a short time and would certainly fit in the category of
erosion control. They multiply from runners--have lovely foliage (silver on the backs)
and tiny clusters of blooms in late fall.

Here is my clump--it has spread this mych in just 2 years. I transplanted it from another bed to
this small location. Now they are sprawling....
I could dig up several and pot them up for you while they are small--if you like..
Here is my bed--and the other pics are close-ups (not mine) of the blooms and leaves.

edited to say--it is NOT particular at all about soils or locations. VERY hardy!

Gita, I can attest to their drought tolerance! I got three of them from you last year and they do spread very nicely. I kept them in those teeny pots until the fall (so busy with the fence going in), but they survived the summer heat with no problem at all. I mean, there must have been only an inch of soil in those pots! They did grow kind of funny due to the lack of soil and complete lack of care.

They were finally planted in the ground last fall and bloomed very late into December, with bees buzzing around them when there was literally nothing else in bloom.

They were probably the first perennial to pop up this spring/late winter and I can see that they've spread nicely. I'm very much looking forward to them this year!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

SS--

Thanks for validating all that i said about them. I would not lie.....:o)
These can also be propagated later on just from
pinching off the tops of the stems. They are some sort of Mum..so propagate easily.

SO--Happy---should i dig some for you? I would put them in small pots..like 2 1/2" or 3'.

Don't know if on line shopping applies here. I just bought 12 miniature roses here for a fantastic price!

http://cubits.org/notfortheserious/thread/view/74014/

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Sure Roses. Are the mini roses for containers?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Oh yes. They make great container plants and bed borders. The good thing, of course, is that they bloom all summer and come back stronger every year with watering and feeding!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Roses, Should I use my Bayer Rose 3 in one on my Roses now or wait a few more weeks?
Every time I tell myself that I'm done buying plants I find something else that I just have to have.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Now is the time for that application, Holly. I also follow up every 2 weeks with a spraying of Daconil.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Roses,

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: You did give me some Pacificum many years ago and it has done very nicely; I transplanted some of it to my awful front hill. I'm very fond of it. But the spot out back is quite shady -- I didn't think the Pacificum would grow strongly there. What do you think?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy--

I am not sure....mine has grown in 2 different light locations.
Full East sun and slightly filtered afternoon sun.

Plant Files says "Full Sun". http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/992/

I imagine it may "survive" in shade--but the colors of the leaves and the
bloom may not be as flashy. I would opt for sun.

Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I agree -- so I can't use it on my newest crisis location which is dry shade. But thanks for the suggestion! I did take a peek at the Pacificum on my awful front hill, and one has started to leaf out...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have the Pacificum in fairly shady- and don't care for it. Thin and gets to 2 feet tall, don't want to deal with trimming it to keep it short.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally, Hope you find some plants of interest or note as you relax after both interviews. It's a great day to upgrade ones employment status. Good luck.

Anyone grow Primrose? I saw some double-flowered ones this week rated as outdoor hardy. I love the smell of the common yellow cowslip.

Also, Coral Bark Maples sure stand out in nurseries full of unleafed-out shrubs and trees. Winter interest and Spring intrigue!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Those are just beautiful.
Everything is just popping up in our yard.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow, Judy! That primrose is amazing!! Almost looks like a Camellia.
I just have a few of the usual ones--been picking some up at Mars grocery store
on the discount rack for 99 cents. Will plant them out and hope they naturalize
enough to come back next year....

Was going to stop at Lowes and see what they have on after Easter mark-downs.
Probably should not go--as I will buy something and have no where to plant it...

Same issue all the time....G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Not sure if I posted pics of these plants that I picked up after the York Flower Show. We quite often buy plants from the display gardens. We get them at wholesale prices. I am sure that I posted pic when I got them but here they are again. This pinkish Hellebore is really pretty wish I had a name for it. Two shrubs a Leucothoe and large leaf Euonymus.

And the Sarracenias Red Pitcher plant is getting ready to bloom. I check it every day and finally the tight bud is starting to loosen up. Lots of new growth, too.

Yeah it is ,, like that ,, you know....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Yeah, I know

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I did not try Homestead (big fancy beautiful nursery in Annapolis) today. It was so nice I went home and got my gardening time in!
Might hit Lowes tomorrow though- they should have had time to put out all the discount signs..

Stopped by Lowes on the way home to see what they had on clearance...

Bought 3 6-packs of pansies--and 2 six-packs of the small Violas. All $1 each.
Also bought a Hellebore--the dark, dark smoky purple one--in a 1gal pot--$5.
Pretty sad looking....had a couple blooms hanging on it--and a few of the old leaves.
There was promise of some new growth from the base of it, though.

I already have one this color--but I like it--so I bought it.....
Now to find an appropriate home for it...

They also had really large, bushy Hellebores--the ones with white blooms. Same price.
Also--piles and piles of Easter Lilies--all still in bloom--$3.

This cold weather is starting to p*%# me off!!! Lets get real! It is after Easter already!!!

Brrrrrrrrrrr....Gita

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita I'm going by lowes tomorrow to see if they have helles!! That's great.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Dear Secret Shopper,

If you find reduced plants at Lowes, I would like two double dark purple and two 'pink Frost' hellebores....Sigh. My store is sold out.

J

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Well I took a visit to the local HD and Lowes. Didn't find any bargain hellebores. I was particularly looking for the double dark purple. I did pick up a 2.8 quart Pieris Japonica Valley Valentine for $7. It jumped out at me last time and I couldn't resist walking by it a second time.

Lowes was restocking while I was there so I could have missed it. But I must say of the twohome depot had the nnicer selection of shrubs.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Straightened up some of the shed today. Taking all the hoses off the floor made enough room to get started. Luckily I was able to reach the nursery type planter pots, because my long awaited little tree arrived and needed to be potted up. Whenever I drive to my daughter's house I pass a tree that I fell in love with. It has large very shiny dark green on the top of the leaf and a beautiful bronze color that looks like suede on the under side. I search pictures for trees with these leaves and came up with a "DD Blanchard Magnolia". The little doesn't have leaves with these colors yet, but I'm hoping that it will soon.
