Your neck of the woods, countdown to SPRING 2013,4 days left

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Jen, So glad your cousin's family is safe. I was watching that this morning and saw the woman with the dog. They will have weeks of work just trying to get some semblance of normal living back. I saw that the only hospital in town was servery damaged, and issues with broken gas and water pipes as well as electricity.

I can't get a single rhododendron to be happy in my garden, and here's a house that got eaten by a rhodo!

Paul, I thought of you when I saw these pics. :)

Boy those sure are beautiful. I could have cried last year when my SIL cut down his. It was huge covered half the window and as tall as the first floor of the house. I guess it was for the best but it was a real beauty. It didn't quite eat the house but given a little more time it could have easily devoured the addition.

SSG- wow that is something. Gorgeous.

holey moley!!!

I guess that could happen here if I didn't prune mine every year

SS--

That monster Rhodo looks just like my neighbor Olga's--at least the color matches...
It is now in full bloom. Gita

Hehehe kind of like the giant yew in my yard. I wanted to see how big it would get.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

LOL It's a good thing you moved that yew 30 feet from your house when you did! And on the tour of your yard at the swap, you are still really tentative about even limbing it up. I totally agree as I sure wouldn't even know where to start. Some plants do do growth spurts when you are not paying attention or busy with other things like that cute little allianthus tree up by the utility pole that I distinctly remember deciding to let grow just one more season that was suddenly almost 3 feet in diameter!

Really like the comments to the rhodies that ate the house that suggested instead of removing the rhodies to enlarge the house (and paint it a different color) to bring every thing to scale!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

That Rhodo is impressive!! It must have taken more than 20 years for the monster to get to this size.

The 3 pictures seem to show a gradual process of the Rhodo growing over the house over the years, although they were taken from different angles/distances on the same day. Very clever.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I have seen rhododendrons this size in full form and blooming. They are spectacular!! It depends on the plant and the growing habit of course. It takes a lot of work to maintain the proper area for rhododendrons to thrive like that considering most are planted on a woodland edge or shaded area What typically happens is that either the woods, trees, underbrush eats the plant. Clearly this is an aggressive and hungry rhododendron that eats almost anything.

After carefully combing through 100s of google images and searching through the American Rhododendron Society web pages I found the cultivar for this plant....

"Pink Goat"

Ba-dump ching!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Haha!

Paul--

"Pink Goat"????? What an odd name for something this beautiful..... :-o

Do you think it is the same as my neighbor's? The color matches...
Hers was bigger--and it was drying up and dying. I cut it down for her about 3 years ago.
It sure re-grew quickly. G.

Gita-

I wouldn't be able to say. We would have to do a side by side comparison of the truss and at least a close-up of a single bloom (to see the throat). To me, they both look like great plants and that is all that really matters to me and most.

P

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

What part is the "truss"?
Also--by a "single bloom" you mean ONE of the blooms
that makes up the cluster?

I could do macros of them....It is in full bloom now.
NOT that it matters a lot--but it would be nice to know the name if you
or I would propagate it.

I have my latest-of-all Azaleas starting to bloom now. It is in that tiny bed
by my front door. Very pretty--sort of salmon/pink--large blooms--like my white one.
I am at work and have no access to my pictures...Later...

Gita-

You can do some searching here.

Truss:
Flower cluster (inflorescence) made up of many individual flowers. The structure varies considerably among species and cultivars, giving the plants a distinctive appearance.

Taken from here: http://www.rhododendron.org/glossary.htm

If you really want to know, I can send the pictures to a few people who might be able to guess.

Thanks Paul---

No--I do not really need to know---just getting carried away here...
Besides--I do not even own it.

Many, many moons ago--I had a Nova Zembia Rhodo where my Camellia now sits.
It got that horribnle roof-fungus(phytothera....something) and the plant had to be dug up
and disposed of.
Have not owned Rhodo since then...Besides--I get to look at Olga's.

I think they should tear down the house and move it. Leave the Rhodo stand. LOL

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Speaking of Rhodos, my HD has several carts of "past bloom" rhodos and azaleas markrd down for clearance to $4. My store had
Olga Mezzitt
PJM 'Elite'
Weston aglo
Chinoisis
catawbiense boursalt
and several others.

They also had 3 gal pots of variagated azalea, and a nice variagated Perris. for $15.

Perrenials are 3/$10 and at my store included astillbe, lime green heuchera, foxglove, shasta daisy, veronica, polymonum, Dancing Butterflies, blanket flower and several others.

Happy, do you want me to pick up some 'Olga Mezzitt' or aglos for you?

Nice price on the heucheras but they are mislabled "Caramel'

I have to pass this store twice a day, so let me know if something interests you all and I can pick up for any of you.

Today I'll be going there this afternoon for 4 bags garden soil for $10 and to see if antthing else note worthy has been reduced.
