Your neck of the woods, countdown to SPRING 2013,4 days left

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Well--still sitting here having breakfast. Looked out the window and there is a very fine
semblance of snow still coming down. Almost like a rain/snow...

Anyone else eat their meals by the computer???
I think of it as "killing two birds with one stone"......

Desperately need to get my hair cut at the local "Great Clips"--but no one is answering the phone!
Wonder if no one showed up????
G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

There was a couple of inches of snow on the back roads, enough to cause a little slip here and there but not too bad. By the time we came home at noon, no problem. It snowed most of the day till at least 3pm. We've been pretty busy of late, and I started PT last week as well as getting the other wrist operated on, on Thursday, and a cervical epidural this morning. My Dr. recommends rest for 24hrs. to get the most from it. So after sleeping all day I'm not very tired. We both have lab test tomorrow (today) early. Then I'm off to take Josh to pick up hardwood flooring for Jen's house. It never did refreeze here so the mess is still melting.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

good to know you stayed safe, now better is hoping for ou to heal up well and all good reports from docs!

Ha ha Gita, I am eating my oatmeal right now, so YES.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

I love my daughter! She and her family have just closed on a house and are in the process of moving in today. When I asked her what the first thing she moved in was, she said "that big flowering begonia from M" I took it with me to closing cause I didn't want anyone else to move it cause they might break it." It looks good!

Certainly a chip off this old block!

Good Easter Passover weekend to you all. And Happy Spring.

Jan, are you coming home soon? Hope all is well with everyone and hope to hear you chatting here soon.

Judy

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

How heartwarming, how exciting for all of you coleup!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

How sweet, coleup. I love the idea of that begonia sitting on the closing table!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I bet they are so excited. How great a new house and a special plant.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Just called. They have finished assembling the bunk bed and have tacked up sheets on the windows.
Kitchen and bath moved in, the rest in boxes or coming tomorrow Brick house from the 1780's but completely renovated. Other grampa hasappliance store so they have had use of truck for moving and elder brother has come for weekend to help.and paint clean old rental unit.
First night in new house, first sunrise in the morning.

Other than not being there to lend a hand or play with grandsons, my one misgiving is that they have no yard! All there is is a 4 x 20 foot strip out front between sidewalk and house. There is one big tree out front, too. Wonder what kind? They shall be challenged urban homesteaders and verticle gardeners for a while. No wonder my daughter guarded that houseplant with her life!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

WOW, That is a small garden area, but I have seen some very beautiful small front gardens.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm always fascinated by historical homes - good for them! I'm sure you will have tons of creative ideas for gardening in that small area.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great news on the move-in!! Love that the begonia brightened up the closing! Challenging garden area, but vertical seems the way to go. I am sure the begonia story warmed your heart. I feel you about wanting to get your hands on the grandies.

I am soooo very glad I was able to help my DIL as it also enabled me to spend quality time with their new son, Markus. He is an energetic little boy. I let him come to me on his own terms and by the time I left he was climbing on my lap and giving unsolicited hugs and kisses. In looking at his physical features, I imagine him looking like Marcus Samuellson, the chef, when he is an adult.

I can also share that #12 is on the way. Our youngest son and wife, down in Texas, are expecting their second child in September. They waited to tell everyone. She apparently has been much sicker this time and were afraid of a miscarriage. They remember another brother's pregnancy announcement followed closely by a miscarriage announcement. So we'll be maki ng a trip to Texas in the fall.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

huge congrats Jan!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

How wonderful.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

So happy that there's lots of good news coming your way now, Jan.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Judy, Do they have a backyard?

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

No Ric, no back yard either. The side and rear are their parking spaces in a parking area they share with multi apartments next door and a vet clinic. There is a 3 foot wide strip between them and the house on the other side. There is no onstreet parking on their one way street.. They seem ok with their decision and price, location, condition, etc trumped having a functional house to live in that they can afford. After five years they were finally selected for a quite generouse down payment assistance grant and first time home buyers program. They moved out of a rental apartment full of mold that the landlord kept painting over...so they are heatlthier now, but yardless.

At one point I said to them that I didn't want grandchildren of mine to be raised in a house with no yard!
Don't know how people do it, but they do. Shifts considerably our plans to relocate up there and what sort of place we will look for.

I did live in New York City for four years and crammed every window and fire escape with plants, even asked landlord about the possibility of putting in a skylight so I could grow more plant. I listened 24/7 to a 331/3 RPM recording on continuous play called "Dawn In New Hope. PA" Bought the first copy of "Mother Earth News" and have been going back to the land ever since! So, back to the drawing board with some fresh paper and some new pencils to figure out the latter third of my life! I do think I have much more to contribute on this earth than good newspaper delivery!

Thanks for asking!

Jan, can't imagine 12! Wow.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Judy---
You sure do! Delivering newspapers may be 'good exercise"--but it is also brutally hard.

I can see you at a job in some BIG Nursery as an educator. Propagator. Clinic holder...

Any BIG nurseries up that way? G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Judy, Sounds like a great house to me. Love the old houses in the city and even with no yard, there are always parks and fun things to do in the city. Good for them and their first house.
You certainly do have more to contribute than good paper delivery. But it isn't always about the job, you have contributed in many ways.
I have a new plant in my garden it grew from pretty much nothing to blooming in just a few days. It's a big bloom, too.
Created it myself.

How'd you do that, Holly?

Judy, I think Gita has a great idea for you!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Roses, They are really easy just check out the thrift shops, yard sales and flea markets for pretty plates then glue them together with E6000 glue. Glue a flat sided bottle on the back. If you do a search for glass plate flowers you will find a ton of them on Pinterest. I had a great time making it. I started with a large frosted serving plate which I partially painted then stacked up two plates one glass and one stoneware add a couple of candle votives a short blue one and taller frosted one.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Judy, It definitely sounds as though they will need to study vertical and container gardening. I hope there's a park nearby.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Coleup , you have the skills for online writing- but at my level it won't pay the bills.

Holly, real cute!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I agree with all the suggestions for you, dear coleup. Glad your DD and family are out of the moldy mess.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Holly. I'll look into your suggestions.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks everyone for your kind remarks re my daughters move and its effects on me. Will start a thread at some point just to share with you all some pros and cons of living and moving there.. Suffice it to say right now that she lives about a mile away from Gardeners Supply if that rings a bell for any of you!

Happy April Fools Day! Read the customer comments on this must have kitchen gadget.

Banana slicer comments are sooooo funny!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

You know Judy at the Phila Flower Show they have a competition for front entrances. They are only about 4-6ft deep X 20ft long and they are just beautiful.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Judy--

I had one of those--and never used it. How silly! Just another thing to wash after, carefully, aligning
it with the banana so all the slices come out the same. Then--having all the pith all over the slicer....YUK!
A much quicker job with any knife--dull or sharp. Even a plastic one. Chop--chop--chop---DONE!

Anyway--it languished in my cluttered large implements drawer, always sticking up and
causing the drawer not to close. Hated that yellow "thing"......
In the link--$6.99!!!!!!!!!! On sale for $3.99!!!!!!!!!! What a ridiculous price....

You can get them in the utensil's boxes at Goodwill for 25 cents.
I guess i was not the only one who gave it away...........what a gimmick!

****Here's a bit of trivia about a banana--in case you have never done this.
Peel the banana. Bite off, or cut off the pointed end so you have a flat end.
Now--very gently squeeze the banana this way--and then the other way--and you will see it start
splitting in three's--lengthwise. Now you can separate the banana in 3 sections longitudinally.
ONLY then--you will see where the seeds are---all along the inside of each of the 3 sections.
Besides--eating only 1/3 of the banana at a time--it lasts much longer.
Giving a toddler one of the thirds--makes it easier for him/her to eat it--rather than trying to bite
a piece off something that is bigger that his/her mouth.

ALL the things you can learn on DG!!! G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

check out the April Fools article today. "Mine" cooperative with Kelli and Carrie, got many more comments than usual. Be sure to read the one from Lucky Texan about the "chemical DHMO"

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Very cute!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

It's official- I am now a Library Associate part time. WOOT! This looks like a great place for me to be at this time in our lives. I am thankful to ALL my coworkers at my current branch who encouraged and coached me before the interview. Now to make good on all the lies I told about how smart, organized, and customer oriented I am...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Congrats Sally, What a great place to work. So glad you are official now even if you did have to tell lies to get the job. LOL

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

They were NO lies----Sally IS all those things....she wouldn't know how to be any different...

Congrats, Sally!!! Where is this new Library you will be working in? Is it in a school also?
Closer? Further? better pay--I presume....What was your "title" before? Library Aide?

...And WHO told you a few years ago that you may like working in a Library???????

thanks!
For three years I have been a "page" That is the job of putting things back where they belong, after people return what they borrowed or use it in the branch. Actually kinda nice because everything has an assigned place, there is very little decision making. somewhat physical due to heavy books and bending to lower shelves. Great job for teens, was minimum wage till couple weeks ago with slight bump. Some library systems may have the page duties combined with the checkout desk duties.
So this opening had been "frozen" for couple years due to budget. It is at the same branch where I have been working, convenient, great staff. I will do librarian stuff at the Info desk- find books, look up things on computer, help plan and do programs like read to kids or have adults in for some sort of general interest thing (Container Gardening!) And oh joy, dealing with yucky or loud people...and yes doubling the hourly rate is NICE, as well as being part time which we think works $-wise. FInd out about benefits next week, part timers pay a lot of the benefits but would think we can get better coverage for the $ than what we are paying now.

I had previously interviewed for this position (but full time and some other branch), last fall when my dad was failing. When the HR lady called in September and said I did not get that one I was actually relieved and explained to her that it could be a bad time to start the job anyway. So that helped me prep for this. And seems like one of those "everything for a reason" moments. By the time I looked at my background and figured an angle where everything fit their needs, I almost convince myself that I am great for the job!

If I may continue to blather-
seems no problem for me to continue DG articles as well, if I have time, And get this--my new schedule works perfectly with the OTHER part time job at the college, updating old records on computer. THe people in that office are super nice, and since I work alone they would be HAPPY if I can continue on ANY part time schedule that I like. They seem to think (supervisor told me) I am pleasant , dependable, and hardworking (and of course already trained and in the system and shown to be self-motivated for even repetitive jobs). Do I have a Special Super Sally twin out there sneaking around visiting these workplaces? LOL

But enough about me.............So glad to see the sun out some as Mark is playing golf this AM- thought he'd be in chilly rain .

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally - that is fantastic news! You absolutely deserve this! Everything does happen for a reason.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Woohoo!!! Happy dance being done here!!! Of course you are all those things and more. No lies being told. Awesome that it will fit with the other job. Thrilled for you!! Celebration is in order!!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Sally, waaaaay cool.! All of the above true true true We always see the Super Special Sally and aren't fooled by your orge or queen disguises. Hey, maybe all that 'organization' around you will rub off to all of us who need a Dewey Decimal System for our lives and yards!

A chicken walks into the library. It goes up to the circulation desk and says: "book, bok, bok, boook".
The smiling librarian hands the chicken a book. It tucks it under his wing and runs out. A while later, the chicken runs back in, throws the first book into the return bin and goes back to the librarian saying: "book, bok, bok, bok, boook".

Again the smiling librarian gives it a book, and the chicken runs out. The librarian shakes her head as she retrieves the hastily returned book. Within a few minutes, the chicken is back, returns the second book and starts all over again: "boook, book, bok bok boook".

The still pleasantly smiling librarian gives him yet a third book, but this time as the chicken is running out the door, she follows it. The chicken runs down the street, through the park and down to the riverbank.
There, sitting on a lily pad is a big, green frog. The chicken holds up the book and shows it to the frog, saying: "Book, bok, bok, boook".

The frog blinks, and croaks: "read-it, read-it, read-it"

Have a great day all and a good weekend.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Heehee, very cute, coleup!

I'd get lost if I used a Dewey decimal system in my garden. Who am I kidding? I'm lost in there anyway.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey where's my post ?? I thought I replied , that's hilarious and I'll have to try it on the staff.!

Ah but being lost in the garden is the goal!
