Daily Bird Pix 450

PERTH, Australia

Hi everyone. I was recently in Hawai'i and have a few shots to share. Unfortunately the weather didn't smile on bird photographers during that time, but I did see a couple of dozen birds that were new to me.

Here's a link to the previous thread. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1297159/#new

Some of these photos have already been posted on a thread I started for Resin to guess where I was - no surprise he knew immediately.

1. Brazilian (Red-crested) Cardinal (O'ahu)
2. Yellow-billed Cardinal (Big Island)
3. Northern Cardinal (O'ahu and Big Island)
4. Saffron Finch (Big Island)
5. Zebra Dove (O'ahu and Big Island)

Thanks, Pelle. It was a real treat to see the Northern Cardinal after viewing other people's posts of it for so many years.

I didn't realize that the northern cardinal was in Hawaii. Enjoyed looking at your photos.

Quote from MargaretK :
1. Common Moorhen (O'ahu)[/quote]
Like the other New World populations, now split from Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus as Common Gallinule Gallinula galeata.

Introduced, like a lot of the other birds on Hawaii. Most of Hawaii's natives are, sadly, extinct (the Hawaiian Common Gallinules, along with Ne-ne Geese, are surviving exceptions, though).

Mrs. Ed......Not all of us have gone extinct yet............When I get back home I'll get Frank's creek up and running again. Depends on how much damage the winter did .

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Glad to hear you're still around! ;-)

I've had this Junco for a week or so. I'm not sure if this would be a Pink-sided, or a pale Oregon form.

Adel, congrats on your latest arrivals. I've still got just one here.

Rose, more beautiful photos of your birds. Have you noticed there are more purple finches compared to the houses? This is the first year I'm seeing this happen.

Here's a white-throated sparrow (the second year for this rare sighting), the folks at Cornell asked that I call this one a slate-colored/cassiar junco when I do my bird count for ebird.
A pair of mallards arrived in our front yard to beg for corn yesterday and returned early this morning.
My hummers were loving the rain this morning.

This must be one of my very favorite threads by far! Thanks Margaret for the new thread and your sharing of those Great photos from Hawaii Islands. How fun is it to have seen 3 species of Cardinal in a short span of time. Whoa! Kim and Marna I'm so very happy for you that you made the trip along with Margaret. I'll need to spend days to go through all the pictures y'all have to share. I've missed such wonderful opportunity! I've been rather busy, couldn't post much. Adel, and Duc, love those wonderful pics. from out West, Adel I'm glad to see Frank's creek is up and running, and those Western hummingbirds y'all got which we don't have down East. Nan, Burn, Helen and Rose I'm so glad to see your posting as well.
Nesting season has begun down here, I do believe. I've seen both male and female Red-bellied Woodpeckers at the feeder. Here is the male RBWP.

I would have more fun with the birds if the starlings and grackles did not eat the hot pepper suet cake all up from the other birds. If it aint the starlings, now the grackles are here and they are huge! It may be spring, but someone forgot to tell mother nature because it started snowing last night around 11 and it has not stopped, I don't know how much we have the neighbor came over with his snowblower and cleared off the boardwalk before I could measure it, but I know we have a bunch. How can I stop the starlings and I don't know if they are crows or grackles, but they are big, how can I stop them from eating the suet? I wanted to have the woodpeckers and smaller birds to eat off the tree, but it has backfired on me. So if I stop putting it out there will they go away? I still have the upside down feeder, I guess I will have to survive with that one. I was trying to be helpful to the birds because of this late snowstorm.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

you can't stop them from eating the suet. I usually just take it away for a while and hope that they move on. Eventually they do. Gotta take the good with the bad when feeding birds.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Fortunately I've missed out on the worst (cold but dry for me), but the weather's NOT been nice in Britain . . . just what does it take to snap a row of 5 electricity poles??

Great photos of all your birds everyone.
That sure is a great list of birds Missy.
Resin, wow, that video is really scary. So glad you're safe. Thankfully I've never seen a storm do all that damage.

Just a few brewer's blackbirds here this year but they're already beginning to show off for their prospective mates. This is a female.
Here's a crow that has gathered nesting material. Must be young because it sure didin't find much material.
This bullock's oriole showed up two days ago.
Two hooded orioles arrived yesterday.
And last, my female nuttall's wp continues to enjoy the peanut butter log several times a day.

Resin Not the weather for March or snow like that at any time. Does the wind usually come from the east like that? We get it off the Atlantic here, but when i have traveled in Britain there seems to be a prevailing west wind.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Thanks! No, it's highly unusual to get east winds for more than 3 or 4 days at a go. But now, they've been blowing for the best part of a month. What's even worse, the Met Office just this morning said that this winter cold is going to continue for another month yet. :-((

I hate to think what will happen to all our summer visitor birds. Bad enough for the resident species. And absolute carnage for livestock farmers.

The Tree Swallows left for awhile, but were back in force today. This house drew a lot of attention.
