Yikes, that's a big messy looking front, too Drew. Keep your galoshes on.Nice palms.
My favorite orchid, Yellow Bird, in bloom today, and a beautiful begonia I got as a cutting from Mj last fall has earned itself a nice new pot today.
Tropical Plants And Gardens #129
Nice Kay!
Back where it's warm, thank goodness. Waiting for Tenants to move, my stuff arrives midweek some time. While I was away, a very large house was built next door dwarfing mine. Might affect the back garden. The fern tree should be at least happy about that, if it's still kicking. I saw it in Feb, and it lost all the fronds, but seemed like the new fiddles about to emerge were still healthy.
Off to get my car registered for TX again. Rather be digging!
Randy, we are SO HAPPY to have you back home!!!!!
Elaine, Lari Ann ID'd that Thai Caladium for me as 'Jungle Rain'. I think it is one of the hardiest Thai's.
Randy, I hope the floods in Houston this week spared you and your garden. So glad to hear you are back in TX, good things come to those who wait.
My White Monster is blooming right now too in front of a Pin Stripe Ginger.
A mixed pot of succulents.
Yup, it does disappear abruptly when the nights get cold, but has been a reliable return grower for me. It's got two flowers in that second to last picture, too!
Couple more of the wonderful begonias you sent me, Alice.
Carolina de Lucerna has huge luminous pink/orange flowers, although the plant is looking very sad at the moment,
Sophie Cecile is putting on gorgeous new leaves with pink spots!
Elaine,
How are your Choc. Bonfire doing?
In the last set of pictures, middle plant is:
Blue Potato Bush, Paraguay Nightshade, Blue Lycianthes, Lycianthes rantonnei

Little bit of new growth starting on the B. Chocolate Bonfire, Paula. I think they are happy. Thanks again!
Did you find a wet location for your C. Blue Hawaii? Or a really big pot under a downspout? So jealous you guys got some rain this week. We've had none for a while now, but hopefully today or tomorrow.
Caladium White Christmas can't decide whether to make green or white leaves. Alocasia Hilo Beauty just starting up.
I'm putting all my EE in pots this year. Tried them in the ground and they just didn't do anything...so until I can make a nice bed for them, they stay in pots. I put them down by the barn so I can remember to water them. That's one place I go every day to feed the horses.
I've had better luck with them in pots but this year mine are all going in the ground because, for me, watering is easier that way. I plan on being away for 5 weeks and I need to let the irrigation system take care of them. Tony Avant says in ground with lots of compost and water so that is what I will try.
Perry's Fire Opal hardy water lily. This was a cutting just planted this past Saturday; future flowers should be larger and have more variegated color.
Well you guys are just confusing me as to what I should do with EE's this year. C. Blue Hawaii is sitting an old bird bath and making new leaves like crazy...Thank You Elaine, I love it. Alocasia Hilo Beauty is just getting going so I think I will set that in a saucer, No pond or any place that I trust to stay wet enough w/o me watering and we don't have auto irrigation. I unlike many am hoping for all the wet to come here...but I swear it splits and goes around us. We did get a good rain last night, but being 8 in. below normal it's just disappearing into the soil. I went out to the riding arena today and kicked the soil around and it was dry underneath. Pooh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
everyone's blooms and plants are gorgeous. have a great day!
How's about we celebrate the new month of May with a NEW THREAD! This one's getting really long!
Come on over to here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1310372/
I can't get A. Hilo Beauty to do anything-I've bought tubers that don't sprout, small plants that die larger plants that just get smaller. I can grow every other kind of EE, but this one.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
Ok, you slackers! Not a single post yesterday? You're probably all out doing something like maybe . . . gardening??
I was out of town all day yesterday, shopping for orchids in Apopka. We drove 2 hours each way to get to the orchid bargain capital of Florida, and was it ever worth it. Here are some shots from the huge greenhouses we visited. I got lovely little Epidendrums for $3 each, Phaius for $8 and Vandas for $7 (sorry, my Scots heritage dictates I must brag about a bargain). Came home with 17 new orchids, now, where the heck am I going to put them. Last two pics are from my haul.
May I ask the name of the nursery you visited? Looks amazing; I see a little road trip in my future!
Thank you in advance :)
