Goody, maybe they are migraters. They get here usually first 2 weeks of March.
I miss the songbirds.
Spring is peeking 2013
Our road's woodpeckers have been really drumming the past few days....nice to hear....saw a robin the other day, but I'm sure it was one that wintered here....
I am happy to even see the winter robins that stay near the lake shore. Its about 10 miles away.
They show up to eat the fermented fruit on a ornamental tree next door.
Snowed last night.
The farm next door to my son's has a swampy area near the road, & a huge flock of robins winters there every year.....
Is it relatively new with the warmer winters, Marilyn? I don't recall seeing robins until spring when we lived in CT before we retired, but I think my son has also seen robins in winter where he lives.
I started seeing winter robins & bluebirds in CT about 20 years ago.....the robins usually stay in a large flock ...I've seen them feasting on sumac...Carolina wrens started showing up here about the same time.....Hammonassett usually winters over a few mockingbirds....Has to be some climate change. The nature writer for the Wtby paper reported seeing a group of sparrows that don't usually winter this far north...
I reported a few days back during our last big blow about a single poor starling who was the odd bird out among all our normal resident winter birds. He was totally confused without his flock, and after not seeing him for a couple of days, we assumed he was a goner. But yesterday afternoon when DH was puttering in our GH he heard a noise in the chimney which he knew from past experience to be a bird. He opened up the clean out door and our flew our starling. After a bit of work we coached it out the door and it flew off. Good thing as I was about to lite the wood stove connected to that chimney so shortly we would have had a cooked starling He is on the ground this morning feeding with the other birds. Patti
Good thing you were able to get him out of there
Lucky bird! My friends had a squirrel jump out of the chimney into the burning logs & into the living room.....I always think about Christmas Vacation & Chevy Chase.....
DH said there are a mess of Narcissus completely out by the rotary on the way into town. I will check them out tomorrow and see if I can figure out who they are. Exciting. Patti
Whew! for the starling! Glad he got out and is now fraternizing with the locals. LOL
the cap for the stove is totally worth the $50.00!!!
Right on Allison.
we just had to spring for caps for our vent pipes for the toilet or whatever they are for.. the birds were nesting in there.. thought the fumes from there would kill them .. no??
Had our chimney capped many years ago....never knew birds would nest on a vent pipe! A friend lives in a condo across town....the front garden gets a lot of sun, so the snow has melted off there & bulbs were poking out yesterday....not here.....gardens still in deep snow.
We hear more is coming your way....be safe!
This has to be the last big storm for the east.
Don't count on it! :(
Yeah Celest. My bones tell me there will be one more in March. We sometimes get a 22 inch surprise that disappears in the next 3 days due to big fluctuation in temp at that time of year.
For what its worth.DD who lives in Florida says there are large flocks of Robing in the parks so it looks like they will be heading north.
I know we are expecting another mid-week, but it may be warm enough that it will be an all rain event. :)
We are due for warming mid week. Probably the same system.
My wedding was March 13, 1993 which if you remember was the storm of the century here in Rochester, NY. We received a police escort from St. Marks Church because during the wedding a state of emergency was declared.
OMG I remember that one.What a nightmare.
wow that's amazing.. good marriage?
Mendon....home of the round rock houses.....
Oh yeah, I remember that storm. Was working that Saturday and had a tough time getting back to Queens. Glass was flying off some of the midtown skyscrapers.
awesome!!!
Imagine a couple in Russia getting married the day that meteor hit!!
OMG how freaky would that be
I wold say to her, 'Anyone can get fireworks, baby...'
LOL
Not a bad line, Victor.....
YAY!!!! I have some color!!!!
Sorry I usually list what each is but I was in a rush
