I have yet to check out the garden showcase. Would like to put some of my stuff in, but right now I'm haveing computer issues (again). My hard drive was going, so I'm getting a new one and having all the files/software transfered over. What a pain!
Bill, I think that's awful that someone at your RU was so furious that you couldn't remember the name of a geranium and could not find the tag. Wow.

Garden Projects #13
I think he was being sarcastic(at least I hope he was)
Furious, really?! Did he pay to get in?! Even professionally run gardens don't always have everything marked! Boot the bum, I say! (LOL)
Not know the name?!! I would have walked out...
Wish someone recorded Bill pronouncing the JM names! David from Davidsan's, with his Midwestern accent, was relating to me how he enjoyed comparing my NY accent to Bill's Boston.
Ha, I don't even try to pronounce things correctly especially Japanese Maples or Acer japonicum.
Almost nothing in our garden is now labelled and all the people (nearly 300) who came to the Garden Conservancy tour last summer where totally fine with my stupidity about names. I did a lot of "who knows, but isn't it beautiful". Or "God Knows, but I sure can't remember today". Then I told them to email me and I that I would get right back to them via email with the correct information as the names of everything in the garden was in my garden journal. Not one of them sent me a query so I think they were mostly just chatting and being polite about liking our garden. But I would have decked anyone being miffed about me not knowing something. I think I would have hip checked them into the rosa rugosa bed. Patti
it is true and it was a her not he - i still think about the dirty look i got from time to time - and when asked about the name plates i use her as one of the reasons why. i also remember kathy (boojum) explaining to me by having the name plates she did not have to answer what's this or that all day long.
the ru was before the metal name tags that was why i had those papers in my hand that listed everything. after pointing out the names for a while i did become tounge tied and started just getting close to the pronunciation - its a japanese name who would notice if i was wrong :)
wow really? that's nuts
you were here jen.
Too funny... I can just imagine trying to answer a miilion questions from a piece of paper... Yikes!
I didn't keep tags until I became active on DG and got more interestedj in growing specific cultivars. Now I have umpteen ugly white tags everywhere, mainly because I'm tired of not remembering from one week to the next what is where--especially since I seem to move everything around a lot.
I'm thinking copper paint pen on beige?
that would work - it is the white that stands out
Pam i had printed out my garden excel file tab's so i had pages for each tab cataloged by plant type and some specific plants like jm's and hosta that i have a lot of - ridiculus to wander around with that.
I know! and I'm trying to think who it could be
Bill you should use paint pen on rocks
can not reveal names, in fact it would take some doing to remember:) I just never forgot the look i got - i have gotten a couple dozen geraniums so hard to remember them all - and the reason for name plates now.
i would need someone with good handwriting, a lot of time, and more (can you believe this) rocks.
At the NYBG they use metal tags but pushed way down low to the ground.
Like little headstones??
Kind of. Doesn't look stupid when they're dead, like the lighter ones.
The rocks are actualy a GREAT idea! Nothing else ever appealed to me. We have plenty of rocks here. Right, Jen. (Yours are still here waiting for you)
Good grief...hope it wasn't me asking about the geranium! I just remember the awesome jms! And dropping a cupcake on your driveway, Bill, & wanting to slink away before you saw it! My tags tend to wander....the print fades away, or I have 2 markers with the same plant....And since Garret dug up half my plants, I'm not sure what I have where anymore.....
I hope it wasn't me either.. something I would not remember
Oh, boy, I am in trouble if anybody asks me names in May when you all come to my house. I will rely on whoever is here to help me out. Heehee.
Getting my disgusted look ready. ^_^
Heehee!! I am hoping you all will be so busy visiting you'll overlook my messes!!
it is none of you guys - geez - a cupcake on the driveway? not a big deal, now one in the new pond that may call for a dunking marilyn :)
i push mine way down so only the top can be seen here - still frost heaves will bring them up
Jo I looked at your shadenewpart & tree peony Really enjoyed it. How you keep the lily beetles away--I gave up on them. How much shade do tree peonies take? Recognized 'Banded Tiger' & 'Bluebeads Ghost'. Too late at night to view others.
I spray for the beetle.
I spray for deer.
I spray for Borer
Actually I spray for borer and beetle at the same time of year.Early spring when lilies are just popping out of the ground, and iris have short green leaves.
I use Bayer Tree and Shrub or Sevin( I have plenty of bees and butterflies so dont jump on me for that)
The TreePeonies do well in part shade. I dont have but 2 an they are both in a woodsy area under trees that arent dense.

I had no room for the 2 tree peonies that I bought, so I put them in a garden near some trees and was worried that they wouldn't get enough sun. Now I know it was a luck mistake. Haven't seen any blooms yet.
Aren't luck mistakes great???!!!
I call them "happy accidents"
I have an area that is in the shade of the house in the morning but afternoon sun. Do you think they might be ok. The aruncus which likes shade does well.
I should think it would be OK.I would keep dark flowering plants out of the sun.The most charming sight I have ever seen is a Tree Peony farm with Japanese Parasols over the darker blooms to protect from sun.
Hope this link works. Its Cricket Hill in case you need to google

Cricket Hill is in my town....I thought the little umbrellas were just charming when I saw them....sort of like a fairy village.....Our library has a fundraiser there every year, but a little too expensive for me....I'd rather spend the money on a peony!
Yes I need to get up there and get more rocks. Hopefully this spring
Really very pretty, ge.
Beauty!
Wow...that's beautiful, Jo......peonies are hard to paint because they are so tissue-like....you really captured that.
Lovely Jo!!
Recent?
great painting.
