Garden Projects #13

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice blooms/buds Patti, Jen and Marilyn! I checked one of my hellebores the other day, and there are lots of buds on it. Can't wait! It usually begins in March. I need to check my Hamamelis. It should be starting soon. The area where my 2 are is one of the areas where I have to clear out a lot of brush. Have cleared that area several times, but this time I will be using the cut vine and stump killer, and the stuff won't grow back. I should be getting it in the mail before the weekend, so I'll be able to get to that project then. Can't wait.

I did inventory on all my daylilies on Monday. I have about 150 that I have enough of to sell. More if I were to account for all the NOID ones, but since I don't have stats on most of them, then I just sell those out of the garden when they're in bloom. If I list, then I like to have stats, as people want to know bloom season, bloom diameter, scape height, etc.

Patti, I've tried heather here, too, but killed mine as well. Lasted a few years, then bit the dust. They like a dry, gravelly soil, I guess. Most of my soil is very rich.

Rosemary, I like the idea of a Stewartia or Magnolia. I love both. I have yet to get a Stewartia. I think that I'll get one to replace the Cornus Florida dogwoods out front when we eventually get rid of them. They may only have a few years left. I'm sure they have that disease they get. If I had Norway maples, they would go, too, do not like them.

Patti, that Betula nigra is gorgeous! I'd love to have one.

Karen, my heathers are in a raised bed....that may help.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Rose - Stewartia is a fantastic tree. Have had one for about 12 years. Three season tree.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

If you decide on a stewarthia rosemary and do not want to wait for them to grow weston nurseries have large specimen's - i have one as well although just pulled it out of the container and planted last year, has really grown a lot.

Norwich, CT(Zone 6a)

My friend and I would like to start sweet potato vines for our containers. She wants to go to the supermarket and get a few sweet potatoes. I tell her that we have to do research on the variety. Any words of wisdom from any of you?

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Hmmm. So many choices for so little space...

Thomaston, CT

Sweet potato vines are ipomoea.....I don't think that's an edible sweet potato......

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Marilyn.I wasnt sure but I think you are right.I dug my ipomoeas one fall and there was a huge tuber.I also remember someone trying to cook them with tasteless results.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes on the sweet potato vines, though I never tried starting them. Always bought small plants in spring.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm bummed out. I went to check on my 'Diana' witch hazel. I'm guessing it's a grafted plant. Anyhow, it's dead above the graft. There's a live growth that came up below the grafted part, but it will not bloom the same. There's no buds on the new growth.

Bummer

Thomaston, CT

Oh, no, Karen....what a disappointment...

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, and it was one I really liked. Have no idea what the root stock would be like. Probably a species variety. I have one of those, and although I like it, it's not a spectacular as the hybrid cultivars.

Thomaston, CT

Witch hazel grows in the woods nearby, but you really have to look closely to see the blossoms.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Same here. The wild ones' flowers are pretty puny.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, puny is right.

I just downloaded a bunch of shots from last year onto the new Garden Showcase on DG. I wanted them to load from oldest in Jan 2012 to Dec 2012, but they got loaded in reverse order. I must have done something wrong. I am always confused when up or down or exporting or importing files. Patti

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Too bad there's no option to move them around once they're in the album like you can on FB

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Everytime there are new gadgets or electronic anything I feel further behind.

Thomaston, CT

Me, too! It's pretty pathetic when I have to ask my 4 year old GS to do things for me......

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

so humiliating. I was at the PT office yesterday and opened a copy of Scientific American. You wont believe whats coming down the pipeline.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

That sounds ominous!!!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Nothing in SA makes any sense to me anymore. I am stuck in bio101 from the 60's. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee! C'mon guys, embrace the future!

Thomaston, CT

Only if the future can make me more comfortable, not necessarily more of a techie.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wait until you get that robot hunk in a few years...

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Ge1836, glad you entered some of your shots. Great use of foliage color. Patti

Thanks Patti.
I save images all year by season to use as a desktop image on my computer.I just loaded everything I had for 2 years.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

cute!

Thomaston, CT

Hunky robot? Hmmmm.....sounds like my brand of techie....

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we are in the presence of the #1 gardener on garden showcase - congrats patti :)

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, only by the sheer numbers of shots that I have posted......not by any other perimeters. I am working on my Narcissus list today. This is new feature is great as I am going to work my way through all my plant collections and post them so they are all together. You all will be so bored with me, very very soon. Hopefully I will get some specialty folks who will correct some of my postings. I got sick of all the metal markers in the garden and pulled them all out, so I am often really confused about who is who. Patti

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

He He He I was about to say the same thing Patti.
I went thru my "Desktop" images because they were the easiest to load.
I am not sure I will go into my other garden files.I need the pix to see what I am loading.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti my wife thinks the metal markers look bad especially when everything dies back and over the winter the frost tends to push them out of the ground. i have to agree, especially since i went with black on white which really stands out, should have choose black on clear or back on gold.

i plan to keep them for now especially for jm's, cornus, shrubs, hosta, peony, and some trees. there is just so many of these that the names are not at the tip on my tougue. still undecided on perennials although i remember back to my ru and one attendee was furious i could not remember the name of a geranium and the plastic stick with the name could not be found (not one of the regular crew here). so it will depend on how much they show in season. i did find the name of the geranium last year when i moved the plant during the pond construction and the plastic stick appeared...........

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Bill:::::: Where are your albums on Garden Showcase ?
Victor too.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

There's a way to see all the images in your individual files, ge, and if you minimize both screens, all you have to do is hold down the mouse and drag them over. Is this the way you're doing it. By the way, I commented that your container images had me buy more seeds to try to emulate yours.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

One of these days...

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

WOW That is worth doing.I will try it.
I have other garden files month by month year by year.
Thanks for the comment Roses are Red.Help yourself to any ideas.Thats how I developed my gardens.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I saw in this week's article this is a way to tag the plants too....hope everyone does that, cause that helps tremendously!
