awesome cool, luvs! We have heard great horned owls a few times over the years and it makes us feel hopefully 'kind to nature' in our very suburban area.

when we have snow, our cardinals show up as well. A male was singing yesterday, I had noticed that one was getting aggressive under the feeder.

Thomaston, CT

Still unable to get to the feeder, but I'm putting out seed on the wellhouse....it's all gone, don't know if the birds ate it, or the wind blew it away.....nice photos, Sherrie.

South Hamilton, MA

I some was windblown, I bet they found the seed on the ground. We had a quartet of cardinals among other birds at the feeder.

lots of bird activity yesterday and today
was reading a bad of Niger seed at the garden show today and it said "niger seed, imported to be used instead of our native thistle"...what the heck does that mean?
Do we not have native thistle in this country anymore? were we running out of thistle?

flowAjen: I have been feeding Niger seed for years. Don't think you can get a native Thistle any more. At least 25 years have been using Niger seed. Photo is Bluebirds feeding on Meal Worms.

Have a great evening,
John

Agreed!!

Every time I see a cardinal I think of my mom cuz they were her favorite

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I feel that way about Mockingbirds and my dad.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pretty sure this is a Peregrine Falcon, in our backyard
This is my son's favorite bird so he was really excited, was there for about 1/2 hour never saw it fly away

Nice!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I used to go to the little farms south of here.Feb.is when the Short Eared owles are migrating .Its such a thrill to see them.

Thomaston, CT

I've never seen an owl sitting in a tree....have seen one in the road, though......not sure if that's a peregrine....they have a streaked breast & distinctive eye marking...here's the illustration from Sibley...

I think I just saw a snowy owl I tried to get a picture but it was too far and it took flight as I walked out the door. What ever it was it was big, white with black stripes.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The sun on him was definitely washing him out.
The juvies are more streaked but I've seen lots of pics where on some the belly is more white

Info from whatbird.com
"Breast may vary from white to spotted and barred"
like this one in flight def has more white

2 Carolina wrens around this morning. Only one appeared while we were doing the bird count. Mr. Hairy wp on the suet feeder this afternoon.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

How do you count birds, and know you didn't count one twice?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yeah - I know I would count the same on over and over. The bird would toy with me.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I would count what I saw at the feeder, once they flew away I stopped counting that species. The only ones I knew were the same birds were the woodpeckers and wrens, usually one at a time and the wrens were always in a pair so I know they were the same. I never really have a big flocks like some do other than the house sparrows.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Would be easier if you shoot each one you see. No double counting... ;)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I've been practicing....but I don't shoot birds. Mister fox keeps coming up on my back stoop with one of the neighbors chickens, tired of seeing him so close. I'm sure the neighbors are tired of losing chickens too!

Nice to have fresh chicken delivered!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ha ha ha!! Never thought of it that way.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Last year a fox cleared out almost all of my nieces flock, love them but they can be a nuisance for chickens.

South Hamilton, MA

You have to count the # of the same type at the feeder. There were 4 cardinals on the ground for instance. After they flew away I didn't count any single cardinals which re turned. Chickadees are difficult as they grab a seed & instantly fly off, while finches sit & eat.
