Would that be the Great Australian Bight? ;-)

Here's some info and pics of Blue-winged Kookaburra: http://eol.org/pages/1049993/overview

Well it was a great big Australian bight. ^_^

Thanks for the link Resin.

Every afternoon about 3 pm I get outside My Studio and sit in the sunshine and have a couple of Wines.
We call it happy hour.
My trusty mascot is always with me.
The Kookaburras are becoming more and more tame or is it cheeky.
Can yall imagine these two saying to each other " should we eat him here or take him back to the Nest "?

Great picture! Looks just like the one has turned to the other for a ' smart' remark. Funny looking birds. Hope you can avoid another 'bight' though

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Yes Sally they are funny looking Birds.
They even laugh at themselves.

In this next Picture Sambo has decided to bop one on the throat.
Can you see how his eyes have gone opaque with the blow ?
They don' t have eye lids like us.

Creepy eyes!
I'm happy to know Sambo is there for your protection! HAHA!

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

The Kookaburra decided to pick Sambo up by the leg and fly off with him.

I have seen these Kingfishers pick up a 6 ft long Red Belly Black Snake.
They flick their head backwards and forwards and snap the snakes neck.

What are the black and white birds? I feed the crows and seagulls three slices of torn bread every morning. The little birds get seed. I have two scrub jays and a few large gray squirrels.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Hi Willowwind,

The black and white birds are Magpies.
There are also other b & w Birds.
They are Currawongs. (Strepera graculina)
They were formerly known as Crow-shrikes or Bell-magpies.

The one next to Sambos right knee in this Picture is a Butcher Bird.
The one standing on my Bar Table next to Sambo is the Currawong.

Oh I hope Sambo came home after that ordeal! That Kookaburra beak looks very sharp in the latter picture.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

His mother went and negotiated his ransom and got him back.
She's a Roo of the World.

This Picture shows the extremely sharp upper beak with razor sharp edges.

Smile

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Yes Willow, it does look like a smile.

This is an awesome post. What great birds to be around. I especially love the Kookaburras. Not so fond of those nasty ticks.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Hi Gardenpom,

We have met before on another Thread.
I just can't remember which one.
I have never seen ticks on the Kookaburras.

Well the Kookaburra finally bowed down to Sambo and they have made friends.
Sambos mum can be seen in the background on the right of this Picture.

Great place you have, Ginger. What type of butcherbird is it on the right?

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Hi Maregaret,
I'm not really sure, but I think it is called a Pied Butcherbird.
Resin might know the true name.
She has two youngins she brings here for a hand out.
But they are grey and white.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

The male of this family hardly ever comes to visit me.
I think he is such a proud guy that he won't be seen in the company of a simple human being.
But sometime I do visit his nesting area.
And what a treat that is.

Wow, Ginger, what a beauty the bowerbird is.

I thought it might have been a Pied Butcherbird. We get the Grey Butcherbirds here, but one Christmas, several years ago, we had a visit from a Pied Butcherbird. It was so friendly and as with all butcherbirds, its song was just beautiful. It stayed around for a few days and then left and we never saw it again. They aren't native to our area.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Yes Margaret, the Pied Butcherbird sure has a beautiful song.
It comes right inside My Studio if I leave the door open.
Then it puts its head high in the air and begins singing to me.
I always have a meat treat for her.
The two young ones only come into the Palm outside the Studio Door.

Do the Grey Butcherbirds sing as well ?

PERTH, Australia

They have the most glorious song of all our birds. It's melodic, fluting and they also sing duets. They are also brilliant mimics. I love the way they "pump" their wings when they sing. We have a pair who have two fledged youngsters that are still being fed at the moment. It's such a treat.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I also love the way they "pump" their wings when they sing/beg.
And when they fly off after getting a meaty treat, they seem to sat "chook-chook" ?
It is possibly their way of saying thank you. ^_^

Satin Bowerbird?

Put out some bits of bright blue stuff, that might tempt him in.

Wow what a great thread ginger!

I love all the birds and your beautiful painting!

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I'll give that a try Resin,
But as you can see this one must be colour blind.

Love the bower bird. Is that a real kangaroo over on the right?

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Yes Willowwind, It sure is.
This is her with Sambos younger sibling.

Pic #1: Sister playing with mums ears.
Pic #2: Curious Sister.
Pic #3: It's safer in mums pouch.
It is truly amazing how this big joey fits inside mums pouch.

It really is strange to see such a Cute Kangaroo with all those legs sticking out of her belly.

Getting back to the Green Bird with the Red Tomato.
She didn't keep it very long.
A Pied Currawong: Strepera graculina came and stole it from her.

Those roos are so cute. Do they both get in the sac? It must be amazing where you live. Are they tame?

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

No Willowwind they are not tame.
But they do become very tolerant of us white fellas who occupy their land.
This particular one stole my Mouth Organ and tried to eat it. ^_^
It sure did provide me with some cute Pictures.

What fun!
Six years ago, I would never have thought I'd get a travelogue of Australia right to my house.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

He looks like he is ready to join the band. So cute. Be funny if he learned to blow in it.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Quote from Willowwind2 :

I know he was more interested in eating it.
But can you imagine having him in a band and taking him to America for a tour.

I like the action in this last Picture.
Without his wings out, It looks like he is diving into water ?

All so lovely, ginger. Would love to see, what your seeing, in person. Thanks for sharing your part of the world.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes indeed. Thanks a lot.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Thanks Burn and Willowwind.

Yes I do feel very privileged to live where I live.
It has never ever snowed here in Brisvegas.
So that makes it more easy to grow Trees that attract Birds.

I finally found Sambo stuck up a tree. ^_^

Well, better outside than kicking around inside!

But why the woolly hat?? (2 pics up) - this is tropical Australia, not icy northern Europe or Canada!
