Don't let them bight your finger.
Would that be the Great Australian Bight? ;-)
Here's some info and pics of Blue-winged Kookaburra: http://eol.org/pages/1049993/overview

Don't let them bight your finger.
Well it was a great big Australian bight. ^_^
Thanks for the link Resin.
Every afternoon about 3 pm I get outside My Studio and sit in the sunshine and have a couple of Wines.
We call it happy hour.
My trusty mascot is always with me.
The Kookaburras are becoming more and more tame or is it cheeky.
Can yall imagine these two saying to each other " should we eat him here or take him back to the Nest "?
Great picture! Looks just like the one has turned to the other for a ' smart' remark. Funny looking birds. Hope you can avoid another 'bight' though
Creepy eyes!
I'm happy to know Sambo is there for your protection! HAHA!
What are the black and white birds? I feed the crows and seagulls three slices of torn bread every morning. The little birds get seed. I have two scrub jays and a few large gray squirrels.
Hi Willowwind,
The black and white birds are Magpies.
There are also other b & w Birds.
They are Currawongs. (Strepera graculina)
They were formerly known as Crow-shrikes or Bell-magpies.
The one next to Sambos right knee in this Picture is a Butcher Bird.
The one standing on my Bar Table next to Sambo is the Currawong.
Oh I hope Sambo came home after that ordeal! That Kookaburra beak looks very sharp in the latter picture.
Smile
This is an awesome post. What great birds to be around. I especially love the Kookaburras. Not so fond of those nasty ticks.
Great place you have, Ginger. What type of butcherbird is it on the right?
Hi Maregaret,
I'm not really sure, but I think it is called a Pied Butcherbird.
Resin might know the true name.
She has two youngins she brings here for a hand out.
But they are grey and white.
Wow, Ginger, what a beauty the bowerbird is.
I thought it might have been a Pied Butcherbird. We get the Grey Butcherbirds here, but one Christmas, several years ago, we had a visit from a Pied Butcherbird. It was so friendly and as with all butcherbirds, its song was just beautiful. It stayed around for a few days and then left and we never saw it again. They aren't native to our area.
Yes Margaret, the Pied Butcherbird sure has a beautiful song.
It comes right inside My Studio if I leave the door open.
Then it puts its head high in the air and begins singing to me.
I always have a meat treat for her.
The two young ones only come into the Palm outside the Studio Door.
Do the Grey Butcherbirds sing as well ?
They have the most glorious song of all our birds. It's melodic, fluting and they also sing duets. They are also brilliant mimics. I love the way they "pump" their wings when they sing. We have a pair who have two fledged youngsters that are still being fed at the moment. It's such a treat.
I also love the way they "pump" their wings when they sing/beg.
And when they fly off after getting a meaty treat, they seem to sat "chook-chook" ?
It is possibly their way of saying thank you. ^_^
: ^)
The male of this family hardly ever comes to visit me.
I think he is such a proud guy that he won't be seen in the company of a simple human being.
But sometime I do visit his nesting area.
And what a treat that is.
Wow what a great thread ginger!
I love all the birds and your beautiful painting!
Love the bower bird. Is that a real kangaroo over on the right?
Those roos are so cute. Do they both get in the sac? It must be amazing where you live. Are they tame?
What fun!
Six years ago, I would never have thought I'd get a travelogue of Australia right to my house.
He looks like he is ready to join the band. So cute. Be funny if he learned to blow in it.
Be funny if he learned to blow in it.
All so lovely, ginger. Would love to see, what your seeing, in person. Thanks for sharing your part of the world.
Yes indeed. Thanks a lot.
Well, better outside than kicking around inside!
But why the woolly hat?? (2 pics up) - this is tropical Australia, not icy northern Europe or Canada!
