Slow Going

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave - it just took 99.5 seconds for a page to load on the brug forum. Seems like something's wrong.

I noticed that everything is really slow this morning too..
DAVE... have a look at the Cracker Jack marigold page in the Plant database..It seems to be linked to every single annual entry in everyone's journal..it took ages to scroll through

I'm investigating. Right now they are coming up fairly speedy.

Starzz,

This is an interesting bug in the database. The Crackerjack marigold entry did not have a genus or species entered, so the system was looking through the journals for all entries that also had the same genus and species (in other words, it looked for all entries that had NO genus or species). This resulted in hundreds of hits.

I disabled that so now it will only lookup journal entries if there is a genus listed for the database plant.

I'm still researching the slowdowns. I have enabled extra debugging on more DG pages.

Starzz are you sure that's 'Crackerjack'? I've always thought they were the big round fat marigolds. I did a google search and look at the ones that came up - http://images.google.com/images?q=marigold+crackerjack&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search The striped blooms make me think of 'Marvel'. If we can figure out which ones they are I'll help you find the latin name for it.

Thanks Poppysue..I may be having a "senior moment" LOL
I will look to see what these were called. They were labeled as "new". I planted them from seed this past spring..I'll see if I still have the packet.
Sorry if I made a mistake.. I will remove the pic..

The database was getting pretty hung up on these long queries from the plants database, and I think that's what was causing the extreme slowdowns.

While the database was trying to load such huge lists of journal entries, everything else slowed down. When I fixed that bug and killed the old lookups in the database, it seemed to pick back up.

We've been hovering around 4% CPU utilization on the server for a while now (pretty good). That's down from 10% utilitization when I first started investigating at 7:25am.

Poppysue..I looked and found out that mine were called Jolly Jester Marigolds ..from McKenzie seeds.
Thanks for setting me straight..I have removed the pic..
Now I will reember the right name..good thing too..as I saved some of the seeds..
I'm learning all the time..

Thanks Dave for such a quick response..
You are simply amazing..!!!!
And if I ever get good enough to post info in the plant database I will know to try to put in the genus or species.
Having fun fun fun here..... :)

Starzz - Jolly Jesters are a French marigold. There's already an entry but you can add your picture to it here http://davesgarden.com/plants/go/172.html Don't feel like you can't add to the database. The more pics & info the better the database will be.

The Crackerjacks are an African Marigold. I added the Latin name to the entry and put Crackerjack as a cultivar name. Now we just need a picture of them ;-)

Oh Yah! Thanks Dave for your speedy attention. It's working much better now!

Right-o Poppysue..thanks for the encouragement.
I did put my pic of the Jolly Jester Marigolds there..
