I have used Bayer 12 month Tree and Shrub insect control for Lily Beetle and Iris borers. It works so far. Active ingredient is Imidicloprid ( sp) a soft skin insecticide.
Garden Gems 2012 # 9
the only thing with 12 month... if you plan on putting any of them out in the spring that hummers or bees feed off.. you can poison them .. the bonide I think is a 3 month deal.. would be gone by then
I drench in spring when lilies emerge and iris have started their new leaves. That kills the larve.
I missed this year because we had such an early spring.I couldnt believe the lilies came on so fast. I did see more beetles than last year.
Karen, I've never overwinted either coleus or EEs, but I have sliding glass doors, & 2 windows in the basement....great for the plants, not so great when trying to wait out a tornado!
Hoping to get some electricity in my little sun room, maybe I can put a small space heater out there for the winter...yay more plants I can save!
We potted 3 alocasias and brought them in for winter. They dont necessarily need a full sun room, just a good light. We have one in a bright hallway.
The room where I overwinter my tropicals its our large enclosed porch. It's on the north side of the house and has windows all the way around, on east, north and west. It's not bright light, but most of my plants do well in there.
Karen
Sounds perfect. When I bought my teeny starters they info said they could be taken in as a house plant.
I just got a small pot of the 'Sting Ray' alocasia. It was $7.99. I really like it. Also got a neat looking fern.
Karen
I want StingRay for next year. Its so unusual.
oohhh that stingray is nice!!!
Robin, read your wish for more places to grow vines. Mine grow thru trees and bushes and some of them just trial on the ground.
Wonderful color to still have! I keep wanting to get more late plants-- Montauk daisies and toad lilies are pulling all the weight here.
Our first frost was a killing one, as we were down to 26 or 27........my toad lily is history, so are all of my annuals except for one salvia....had another frost this morning....Thanks for the tip, Roses....I do have a climbing rose in an apple tree.....I would like to place a clem in a shrub, but not sure if it will work.....Pixie, your flowers are still awesome!

Love that you still have flowers up there!!!!
Love that peach one!!!!
Hope my reblooming one from Dana survives.....those are lovely....nice selection, Jen....
Roses, thanks for the link. I'll have to order some. I've ordered from them before. Usually good prices.
Celeste, that's a nice grouping of shots you have there. You too, Jo and Jen. Nice to still see some color.
Jen, I got some rebloom on one of my clems. Nice when that happens. Never get any rebloom on my iris, although I don't have any that are considered rebloomers. I thought I had Immortality, but it turns out it was something else. Now the name escapes me.
We had our first frost on the 12th. I got all my tropicals in, but forgot about my pineapple sage. Thankfully it did not get hit hard. Must be more hardy than the coleus, as they all got it good, as did the rest of my annuals. Perennials are still looking good, though. The cannas are done for. I'll put them in the cellar this weekend.
Karen
oh yeah!!.. great blooms today all!!!
Some pretty color still going on! We had a frost but luckily not a killing frost yet. Glad most of the tender stuff is in though. I'm skipping the dahlias this year and keeping my fingers crossed. Have to lighten up on some things, just can't dig them.
Lucky you to get rebloom Jo!
Jen I love that red salvia.
I hope this Facebook album opens, just takin a chance
